Abstract
Objective To summarize the status and characteristics of the available evidence, research gaps, and future research priorities for preventing falls in stroke patients through balance training. Methods We used a scoping review framework. A systematic search of PUBMED, Embase, and Cochrane databases for main articles was conducted. Our study only included articles that on balance training and fall-related indicators in stroke patients. Two researchers independently screened the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data of demographic, clinical characteristics, intervention, sample, and outcome indicators were extracted. The characteristics and limitations of the included literature were comprehensively analyzed. Results Of the 1,058 studies, 31 were included. The methods of balance training include regular balance training, Tai Chi, Yoga, task balance training, visual balance training, multisensory training, aquatic balance training, perturbation-based balance training, cognitive balance training, system-based balance training, and robot-assisted balance training. The commonly used outcome measures include clinical balance test, such as Berg balance scale (BBS), Timed Up-and-Go Test (TUG), Fall Risk Index assessment (FRI), Fall Efficacy Scale score (FES), and instrumented balance tests. Conclusion This scoping review summarizes the existing primary research on preventing falls in stroke patients by balance training. Based on the summary of the existing evidence, the characteristics of balance training and their relation to falls in stroke patients were found. The future researches should explore how to develop personalized training program, the sound combination of various balance training, to more effectively prevent falls.

Abstract
Stroke self-efficacy is under-investigated in sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, studies focusing on the relationship between self-efficacy and post-stroke functional outcomes are scarce. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the association between self-efficacy and post-stroke activity limitations, locomotor ability, physical activity, and community reintegration in Benin, a sub-Saharan African country. To achieve this purpose, a selection of stroke patients was made from the admission registers of the physiotherapy clinics (rehabilitation units) of three reference hospitals in Benin from January to April 2018. Stroke patients who were still continuing their rehabilitation sessions were informed by direct contact. Those who had already finished their sessions were informed by telephone. Sixty stroke patients of those contacted gave their consent and were recruited for this study. The sample consisted of 44 men and 16 women with a mean age of 56.7 ± 10.4 years. Activity limitations, locomotor ability, physical activity, community reintegration, and self-efficacy were self-reported using ACTIVLIM-Stroke, Abiloco-Benin, the Africa francophone version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-AF), the Reintegration to Normal Living Index (RNLI), and a French version of the Stroke Self-efficacy Questionnaire (SSEQ-F), respectively. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (ρ) were calculated to characterize the relationship between self-efficacy and activity limitations, locomotor ability, physical activity, and community reintegration. According to the results, self-efficacy showed a moderate correlation with physical activity (ρ = 0.65; p < 0.001) and high correlations with activity limitations (ρ = 0.81; p < 0.001), locomotor ability (ρ = 0.72; p < 0.001), and community reintegration (ρ = -0.84; p < 0.001). Thus, self-efficacy emerges as an important factor associated with the functional recovery of stroke patients in sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract
PURPOSE Poststroke rehabilitation is an inevitable element of the treatment for stroke survivors. This study aimed to investigate the effect of balance training with mirror therapy in older adults with poststroke balance impairment. DESIGN/METHODS The study adopted a two-arm randomized clinical trial and included 38 older adults with poststroke balance impairment. The intervention group received balance exercises with mirror therapy, whereas the control group received the same balance exercises without mirror therapy (a nonreflective plate was used instead). The patient outcome, the balance score, was measured using the Berg Balance Scale. Analysis of covariance was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Results showed that balance exercises combined with mirror therapy were significantly more effective than balance exercises without mirror therapy in improving balance in the stroke survivors (p < .001). CONCLUSION Mirror therapy combined with regular balance exercises is an effective and practical method for enhancing balance in older adults suffering from balance impairment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Balance training combined with containing mirror therapy may be included in the rehabilitation programs of older adults with poststroke balance impairment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the association between depression/anxiety and activity limitations and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in chronic stroke survivors in Benin. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and seventy-six chronic stroke survivors (113 males; mean age (±SD): 56.5 (±10.5) years old) were included. We used the Barthel index (BI) to assess activity limitations. Participants were screened for depression and anxiety symptoms using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). Euroqol-5 Dimensions-3 Levels (EQ-5D-3L) including a Visual Analog Scale (EQ-VAS) was used to assess HRQoL. Multivariate linear regressions were performed to determine the impact of psychological disorders on activity limitations and HRQoL. RESULTS Depression (β=-0.54; p < 0.0001) and anxiety (β=-0.35; p < 0.0001) were negatively associated with activity limitations (R2=0.60). Similar patterns of association were observed with HRQoL (β≤-0.28; p < 0.0001; R2 ≥0.40). Inversely, occupational status showed positive association with EQ-5D-3L summary index scores (β = 0.21; p = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS Depression and anxiety had a negative impact on activity limitations and HRQoL in Beninese chronic stroke survivors. This call for action to integrate psychological interventions as part of rehabilitation programs in low and middle-income countries.Implications for rehabilitationPost-stroke depression and anxiety are quite common among stroke survivors in sub-Saharan Africa.Post-stroke depression and anxiety negatively impact activities and health-related quality of life in chronic stroke survivors in sub-Saharan Africa.Managing these post-stroke psychological disorders is necessary to promote the functional recovery and social reintegration of stroke survivors in their communities.

Abstract
Stroke causes balance dysfunction, leading to decreased physical activity and increased falls. Thus, effective balance exercises are needed to improve balance dysfunction. This single-blind, single-center randomized controlled trial evaluated the long-term and continuous effects of balance exercise using a real-time postural feedback system to improve balancing ability safely. Thirty participants were randomized into intervention (n = 15) and control (n = 15) groups; 11 in each group completed the final evaluation. The effect of the intervention was evaluated by muscle strength of knee extension, physical performance (short physical performance battery, the center of pressure trajectory length per second, and Timed Up and Go test [TUG]), and self-reported questionnaires (modified Gait Efficacy Scale [mGES] and the Fall Efficacy Scale) at pre (0 week), post (6-week), and at follow-up (10-week) visits. The TUG and mGES showed a significant interactive (group * time) effect (p = 0.007 and p = 0.038, respectively). The intervention group showed significant decreasing time to perform TUG from pre- to post-intervention (p = 0.015) and pre-intervention to follow-up (p = 0.016); mGES showed a significant change from pre-intervention to follow-up (p = 0.036). Thus, balance exercise using a real-time postural feedback system can confer a positive effect on the walking ability in patients with chronic stroke and increase their self-confidence in gait performance.

Abstract
Background Balance impairment is the predominant risk factor for falls in stroke survivors. A fear of falling after stroke can contribute to sedentary lifestyles, increased disability and risk of recurrence, leading to poor quality of life. Objective To determine the frequency and factors associated with balance impairments amongst stroke survivors at the University Hospital of Parakou. Method This cross-sectional study included adult stroke survivors. Stroke survivors after discharge were enrolled at the University Hospital of Parakou between 01 January 2020 and 30 September 2020. Balance impairments were measured by using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the Timed Up and Go (TUG) and the Get Up and Go (GUG) tests. Results A total of 54 stroke survivors were included, with a mean age of 58.37 ± 12.42 years and a male predominance of 68.52%. The mean BBS score was 36.87 ± 14.34 with a minimum and a maximum of 10 and 56, respectively. Thirteen (24.07%) had balance impairments (BBS score ≤ 20), 34 (62.96%) had a TUG score ≥ 14 s (abnormal), 9 (16.67%) presented a moderate risk of falling and 6 (11.11%) presented high risk of fall with the GUG test. Post-stroke duration (odds ratio [OR] = 0.04; 95% CI: 0.04–0.30; p < 0.01), severity of disability (OR = 8.33; 95% CI: 1.03–67.14; p = 0.03) and the number of physiotherapy sessions (OR = 0.18; 95% CI: 0.03–0.93; p = 0.02) were significantly associated with balance impairments. Conclusion Our results showed that almost one quarter of stroke survivors after discharge at the University Hospital of Parakou had balance impairments. Post-stroke duration, severity of disability and the number of physiotherapy sessions were significantly associated with balance impairments. Clinical implications [AQ1] Balance should be regularly assessed in people post-stroke. Further studies should document the content of rehabilitation and any rehabilitative efforts to improve balance in people post-stroke in Benin.

Abstract
Stroke is a major cause of disability worldwide, and balance impairments are common disabling factors in patients with stroke, leading to falls. Thus, the study objectives were as follows: (i) To find the prevalence of balance impairment among patients with stroke. (ii) To find out the factors associated with balance impairment in patients with stroke. This cross-sectional retrospective case control study involved eighty-one post stroke patients with a mean age of 58.36 ± 14.06, recruited from six hospitals, who underwent an assessment of balance, walking speed, depression and isometric strength of the ankle and knee. These patients were later categorized into subjects with good balance (<45) in the Berg balance scale (BBS) and those with poor balance (≥45), as cases and controls, to assess the factors associated with balance impairment using binary logistic regression. The prevalence of balance impairment among patients with stroke was 48.1%. The reduction in power of knee flexors (OR = 0.858), knee extensors (OR = 0.880) and ankle dorsiflexors (OR = 0.820) was found to be significantly associated with balance impairment, along with speed (OR = 1.187 (95% CI = 1.100, 1.280)), depression (OR = 1.331 (95% CI = 1.055-1.679)) and activities of daily living (OR = 0.313 (95% CI = 0.150-0.650)). In summary, around half of the patients with stroke exhibited balance impairments, with females being more prone.

Abstract
Background: Improving balance-related ability is an important goal in stroke rehabilitation. Evidence is needed to demonstrate how this goal could be better achieved. Aim: Determine if trunk exercises on unstable surfaces would improve trunk control and balance for persons in the subacute stage of stroke. Design: An assessor-blind randomized controlled trial. Setting: Inpatients in the department of rehabilitation in a general hospital. Population: Patients who suffered a first-time stroke with onset from one to six months. Methods: Inpatients with stroke were assigned to upper limb exercises (control group, n = 17) or trunk exercises on unstable surfaces (experimental group, n = 18) to receive training twice a week for six weeks, in addition to their daily conventional stroke rehabilitation. Sensorimotor function tests, including hand grip, plantar sensitivity, stroke rehabilitation assessment of movement and Fugl-Meyer lower extremity motor scale, and clinical outcome assessments, including Trunk Impairment Scale and 6 m walk test, were conducted before and after six weeks of training. The center of the pressure area while maintaining static posture and peak displacement while leaning forward, as well as the average speed of raising the unaffected arm, were measured in sitting without foot support, sitting with foot support and standing to reflect trunk control, sitting balance and standing balance, respectively. Results: The between-group differences in the sensorimotor functions were nonsignificant before and after training. Compared with the control group, the experimental group had significantly greater forward leaning and faster arm raising in sitting without foot support, higher Trunk Impairment Scale total score, and shorter 6 m walking time after training, but not before training. Conclusion: Trunk exercises on unstable surfaces could further improve trunk control, the ability to raise the unaffected arm rapidly in sitting, and walking for persons in the subacute stage of stroke. This intervention may be considered to be included in stroke rehabilitation.
