Toward an optimal design principle in symmetric and asymmetric tree flow networks

Asymmetric lung increases particle filtration by deposition

Human lung is known to be an asymmetric dichotomously branched network of bronchioles. Existing literature on the relation between anatomy and air-flow physics in the tracheobronchial trees has discussed the results of asymmetry. We discuss a secondary (but an important) lung function to seek asymmetry: to protect the acinus from a high pathogen load. We build morphometric parameter-based mathematical models of realistic bronchial trees to explore the structure-function relationship. We observe that maximum surface area for gas exchange, minimum resistance and minimum volume are obtained near the symmetry condition. In contrast, we show that deposition of inhaled foreign particles in the non-terminal airways is enhanced by asymmetry. We show from our model, that the optimal value of asymmetry for maximum particle filtration is within 10% of the experimentally measured value in human lungs. This structural trait of the lung aids in self-defence of the host against pathogen laden aerosols. We explain how natural asymmetric design of typical human lungs makes a sacrifice away from gas exchange optimality to gain this protection. In a typical human lung, when compared to most optimal condition (which is associated with symmetric branching), the fluidic resistance is 14% greater, the gas exchange surface area is about 11% lower, the lung volume is about 13% greater to gain an increase of 4.4% protection against foreign particles. This afforded protection is also robust to minor variations in branching ratio or variation in ventilation, which are both crucial to survival.

The liver, a functionalized vascular structure

The liver is not only the largest organ in the body but also the one playing one of the most important role in the human metabolism as it is in charge of transforming toxic substances in the body. Understanding the way its blood vasculature works is key. In this work we show that the challenge of predicting the hepatic multi-scale vascular network can be met thanks to the constructal law of design evolution. The work unveils the structure of the liver blood flow architecture as a combination of superimposed tree-shaped networks and porous system. We demonstrate that the dendritic nature of the hepatic artery, portal vein and hepatic vein can be predicted, together with their geometrical features (diameter ratio, duct length ratio) as the entire blood flow architectures follow the principle of equipartition of imperfections. At the smallest scale, the shape of the liver elemental systems-the lobules-is discovered, while their permeability is also predicted. The theory is compared with good agreement to anatomical data from the literature.

Inflected wings in flight: Uniform flow of stresses makes strong and light wings for stable flight

Flying animals morph and flex their wings during their flight. Their wings morph with the turbulent flow created around them. The wings of modern airplanes do not have this ability. In this study we show that the ability to flex the wings leads to greater stability (higher flutter speed), and that this is due to the more uniform distribution of stresses in the flexing wing. This way the flexing wing becomes the lightest per unit of flapping force, or the strongest per unit of weight.

A mathematical analysis for constructal design of tree flow networks under unsteady flow

Tree flow networks play an important role in both natural and man-made systems. In an effort to develop a deeper understanding of the optimal design of these networks, we have developed a simple analytical approach to deal with steady and unsteady flows. As a result, optimal relations for the homothetic ratio of tube sizes and optimal angles between daughter tubes are obtained. The obtained optimum homothetic ratios satisfy the criterion of the minimization procedure of flow impedance based on geometry and the svelteness ratio. The robustness, accuracy and convergence of model are also proved mathematically in order to validate the results.

Fractal analysis of concurrently prepared latex rubber casts of the bronchial and vascular systems of the human lung

Fractal geometry (FG) is a branch of mathematics that instructively characterizes structural complexity. Branched structures are ubiquitous in both the physical and the biological realms. Fractility has therefore been termed nature's design. The fractal properties of the bronchial (airway) system, the pulmonary artery and the pulmonary vein of the human lung generates large respiratory surface area that is crammed in the lung. Also, it permits the inhaled air to intimately approximate the pulmonary capillary blood across a very thin blood-gas barrier through which gas exchange to occur by diffusion. Here, the bronchial (airway) and vascular systems were simultaneously cast with latex rubber. After corrosion, the bronchial and vascular system casts were physically separated and cleared to expose the branches. The morphogenetic (Weibel's) ordering method was used to categorize the branches on which the diameters and the lengths, as well as the angles of bifurcation, were measured. The fractal dimensions (DF) were determined by plotting the total branch measurements against the mean branch diameters on double logarithmic coordinates (axes). The diameter-determined DF values were 2.714 for the bronchial system, 2.882 for the pulmonary artery and 2.334 for the pulmonary vein while the respective values from lengths were 3.098, 3.916 and 4.041. The diameters yielded DF values that were consistent with the properties of fractal structures (i.e. self-similarity and space-filling). The data obtained here compellingly suggest that the design of the bronchial system, the pulmonary artery and the pulmonary vein of the human lung functionally comply with the Hess-Murray law or 'the principle of minimum work'.

Topologic and Hemodynamic Characteristics of the Human Coronary Arterial Circulation

Background

Many processes contributing to the functional and structural regulation of the coronary circulation have been identified. A proper understanding of the complex interplay of these processes requires a quantitative systems approach that includes the complexity of the coronary network. The purpose of this study was to provide a detailed quantification of the branching characteristics and local hemodynamics of the human coronary circulation.

Methods

The coronary arteries of a human heart were filled post-mortem with fluorescent replica material. The frozen heart was alternately cut and block-face imaged using a high-resolution imaging cryomicrotome. From the resulting 3D reconstruction of the left coronary circulation, topological (node and loop characteristics), topographic (diameters and length of segments), and geometric (position) properties were analyzed, along with predictions of local hemodynamics (pressure and flow).

Results

The reconstructed left coronary tree consisted of 202,184 segments with diameters ranging from 30 μm to 4 mm. Most segments were between 100 μm and 1 mm long. The median segment length was similar for diameters ranging between 75 and 200 μm. 91% of the nodes were bifurcations. These bifurcations were more symmetric and less variable in smaller vessels. Most of the pressure drop occurred in vessels between 200 μm and 1 mm in diameter. Downstream conductance variability affected neither local pressure nor median local flow and added limited extra variation of local flow. The left coronary circulation perfused 358 cm³ of myocardium. Median perfused volume at a truncation level of 100 to 200 μm was 20 mm³ with a median perfusion of 5.6 ml/min/g and a high local heterogeneity.

Conclusion

This study provides the branching characteristics and hemodynamic analysis of the left coronary arterial circulation of a human heart. The resulting model can be deployed for further hemodynamic studies at the whole organ and local level.

Optimal Branching Structure of Fluidic Networks with Permeable Walls

Biological and engineering studies of Hess-Murray's law are focused on assemblies of tubes with impermeable walls. Blood vessels and airways have permeable walls to allow the exchange of fluid and other dissolved substances with tissues. Should Hess-Murray's law hold for bifurcating systems in which the walls of the vessels are permeable to fluid? This paper investigates the fluid flow in a porous-walled T-shaped assembly of vessels. Fluid flow in this branching flow structure is studied numerically to predict the configuration that provides greater access to the flow. Our findings indicate, among other results, that an asymmetric flow (i.e., breaking the symmetry of the flow distribution) may occur in this symmetrical dichotomous system. To derive expressions for the optimum branching sizes, the hydraulic resistance of the branched system is computed. Here we show the T-shaped assembly of vessels is only conforming to Hess-Murray's law optimum as long as they have impervious walls. Findings also indicate that the optimum relationship between the sizes of parent and daughter tubes depends on the wall permeability of the assembled tubes. Our results agree with analytical results obtained from a variety of sources and provide new insights into the dynamics within the assembly of vessels.
