Synthesis of an adsorbent from sugarcane bagass by graft copolymerization and its utilization to remove Cd (II) ions from aqueous solution

Potential of sugarcane bagasse in remediation of heavy metals: A review

Presence of heavy metal (HM) ions in wastewater have emerged as among the most prominent issues for improving water quality and reducing it's consequences for the environment, animal and public health. This paper mainly focuses on the remediation of HM ions from wastewater utilizing the relatively inexpensive and widely accessible agricultural waste-Sugarcane Bagasse (SCB). For this, a brief understanding of HMs was discussed (by understanding the sources and toxicity of HM, advantages and shortcomings of conventional processes). Apart from that, to understand the potential of SCB, this review would provide vital information on employing SCB biosorbent in natural and modified forms for HM removal. Therefore, various ways of SCB modifications (including physical, chemical, and composite formation), essential optimal operational conditions (solution pH, dosage of biosorbent, initial metal concentration, contact time, agitation speed, temperature, suitable isotherm and kinetic model) and involving adsorption mechanism were also studied. Finally, significant study gaps were identified to facilitate future research since SCB has been confirmed as a potential bio-adsorbent for removing HM ions.

Effective removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution based on multifunctional nanoporous silicon derived from solar kerf loss waste

Recycling of kerf-loss slurry waste has become a meaningful and urgent issue in recent years. In this study, a novel hybrid material was prepared by Ag-assisted chemical etching kerf loss silicon waste and subsequently functionalized by a facile three-step graft process of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy-silane, maleic anhydride, and ethylenediamine, named as EDA-MAH-APTES-NPSi, which could work as an effective adsorbent for removal of Cd(Ⅱ) from aqueous solution. The effect of initial pH, absorption duration, and metal ion concentrations on absorption performance were investigated. The adsorption equilibrium achieved after 120 min, the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 210.01 mg/g and pH was at 5.5. The adsorption kinetic was fitted in the pseudo-second-order model and the Freundlich equation provided an accurate description for adsorption behavior. The XPS and FT-IR analysis manifested that Cd(Ⅱ) removal might be ascribed to the adsorption on the surface organic functional group by chemical chelating reaction and the ion exchange reaction. The EDA-MAH-APTES-NPSi maintained excellent adsorption capacity which decreased approximately 15.3 % (from 40.5-34.3 mg/g) after five successive regenerated cycles. The work confirms the potential of Cd(Ⅱ) removal from aqueous solution based on the modified NPSi and opens up a new way for recycling silicon cutting waste.

Potato Peels as an Adsorbent for Heavy Metals from Aqueous Solutions: Eco-Structuring of a Green Adsorbent Operating Plackett–Burman Design

Treatment of wastewater is becoming a concern of an increasing prominence. Trace amounts of toxic metalloids and heavy metals (HMs) would contaminate large volumes of water. Being present as traces, removal of these ultratrace contaminants from wastewater is challenging. Adsorption of HMs onto raw (RPP) and burnt (BPP) potato peels (PP) is presented in the current treatise. Both adsorbents (RPP and BPP) proved to be efficient in removing Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), La(III), Ni(II), and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. BPP was a more efficient adsorbent compared to RPP. Ecodesign of a model, green adsorbent was structured executing a multivariate approach, design of experiments (DoE). The purpose of using DoE is to maximize the efficiency of BPP (carbonaceous biomass) as a versatile adsorbent. Plackett–Burman design (PBD) was used as a screening phase. Four factors were considered: pH, contact time (CT), heavy metal concentration (HMC), and the adsorbent dose (AD). The Pareto chart of standardized effects shows that the most influential factor is the HMC. These data were confirmed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Derringer’s function was operated to find the best factorial blend that maximizes the adsorption process. The percentage (%) removal of Cd(II), for example, was maximized hitting 100%. Adsorbent surface characterization was performed using FTIR, BET, SEM, TGA/dTG, and EDX analyses. Adsorption was found to be physisorption that follows Temkin isotherm with sorption energy 66 kJ/mole. Adsorption kinetics was found to be pseudo-first-order. Adsorption capacity (qm) for BPP was 239.64 mg/g. The diffusion inside the particles was very limited, while the initial rate of the adsorption was extremely high as shown by the Elovich plot.

Hydrazinolyzed cellulose-g-polymethyl acrylate as adsorbent for efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution

Hydrazinolyzed cellulose-graft-polymethyl acrylate (Cell-g-PMA-HZ), an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution, has been prepared by ceric salt-initiated graft polymerization of methyl acrylate from microcrystalline cellulose surface and subsequent hydrazinolysis. The influences of initial pH, contact time, and temperature on adsorption capacity of Cell-g-PMA-HZ as well as adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic properties were examined in detail. As for Cd(II) adsorption, kinetic adsorption can be explained by pseudo-second-order, while adsorption isotherm fits well with Langmuir isotherm model, from which maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity can be derived as 235.85 mg g^-1 at 28 °C. Further thermodynamic investigation indicated that adsorption of Cd(II) by adsorbent Cell-g-PMA-HZ is endothermic and spontaneous under studied conditions. On the other hand, isotherm of Pb(II) adsorption fits well with Freundlich isotherm model and is more likely to be a physical-adsorption-dominated process. Consecutive adsorption-desorption experiments showed that Cell-g-PMA-HZ is reusable with satisfactory adsorption capacity.

Removal of barium from radioactive aqueous solution by PVA–alginate encapsulated titanium oxide using sunlight and other light types

TiO₂ NPs were synthesized by hydrothermal method. TiO₂ PVA–alginate beads were used for barium ion removal from wastewater, removing 98% of Ba²⁺ in 130 min at pH 8 by sunlight, and the beads could be reused 5 times. Ba²⁺ reduction fitted the pseudo second-order rate model.
