Role of functionalized self-assembled peptide hydrogels in in vitro vasculogenesis

Fabrication of vascularized tissue constructs plays an integral role in creating clinically relevant tissues. Scaffold materials should be sufficiently vascularized to mimic functional and complex native tissues. Herein, we report the development of bioactive and biomimetic self-assembled peptide (SAP) hydrogels that allow the rapid formation of a vascular structure in vitro. The KLDLKLDLKLDL (KLD peptide) SAP was functionalized with laminin derived peptides IKVAV (V1) and YIGSR (V2) through direct coupling to mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) and human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultured in 0.5% and 1% SAP hydrogels organized into vascularized structures. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images proved the molecular integration of the nanofibrous structure in SAP hydrogels. The stability of SAP hydrogels was confirmed by rheological and degradation measurements. Bioactive peptide scaffolds enhanced significantly HUVEC/hMSC proliferation depicted by MTT analysis compared to KLD. Furthermore, the real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) was performed to analyse vascular gene expressions such as platelet/endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1), von Willebrand factor (vWF), and vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin). The results indicated that the KLD-V2 hydrogel significantly induced vasculogenesis in hMSC/HUVEC co-culture compared to KLD-V1, Biogelx and KLD because YIGSR in KLD-V2 promoted cell population and ECM secretion by the interaction with cells and increased vasculogenesis. Overall, the designed SAP hydrogel represents an effective scaffold for vascularization of tissue constructs with useful tissue engineering applications.

A Review of Recent Advances in the Inhibition of Sweet Corrosion

This review paper discusses the research work published in the last decade on the use of organic compounds and natural products as corrosion inhibitors for steel in CO₂ and CO₂ /H₂ S coexisting environments. The carbon and mild steel samples tested are mostly immersed in CO₂ -saturated NaCl/brine solutions or simulated oilfield waters. The influence of temperature, immersion time, CO₂ partial pressure, pre-corrosion, flow rate/rotation speed, and the synergistic effect of other compounds on the corrosion inhibition effectiveness of organic compounds and natural products is presented. Primarily, weight loss and electrochemical techniques were used to evaluate the corrosion inhibition effectiveness of these compounds.

Poly (Vinyl Butyral-Co-Vinyl Alcohol-Co-Vinyl Acetate) Coating Performance on Copper Corrosion in Saline Environment

Poly (vinyl butyral-co-vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) named further PVBA was investigated as a protective coating for copper corrosion in 0.9% NaCl solution using electrochemical measurements such as, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization associated with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The PVBA coating on the copper surface (Cu-PVBA) was modeled in methanol containing PVBA. Its inhibitory properties against corrosion was comparatively discussed with those of the copper sample treated in methanol without polymer (Cu-Me) and of untreated sample (standard copper). A protective performance of PVBA coating of 80% was computed from electrochemical measurements, for copper corrosion in NaCl solution. Moreover, AFM images designed a specific surface morphology of coated surface with PVBA, clearly highlighting a polymer film adsorbed on the copper surface, which presents certain deterioration after corrosion, but the metal surface was not significantly affected compared to those of untreated samples or treated in methanol, in the absence of PVBA.

Analyses of New Electrochemical Techniques to Study the Behavior of Some Corrosion Mitigating Polymers on N80 Tubing Steel

Two synthesized polymers were studied as potential corrosion inhibitors for N80 Steel in a sweet corrosive environment. Poly-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (PDMC), or P1, and poly-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone P(DMC-co-NVP), or P2, were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, polarization technique, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), scanning Kelvin probe (SKP), and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). The surface was examined using contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy methods. Analyses of electrochemical and polarization techniques revealed a PDMC polymer with a better inhibition efficiency. The SECM, SKP, and SVET methods showed the insulating ability of the polymers that formed a protective coating on the metal surface.

Progress on pharmaceutical drugs, plant extracts and ionic liquids as corrosion inhibitors

In the past, lives and wealth have been lost due to corrosion in almost all engineering fields. Not only this, the cost of reviving damaged equipments in the industry due to corrosion contributed a lot to the gross domestic product of a nation. Thus, all hands must be on desk to combat this harzadous act via time to time research on its final resolution. However, current research works have revealed effective and reliable corrosion inhibitors from pharmaceutical drugs, plant extracts and ionic liquids as organic green corrosion inhibitors (OGCIs) with accommodative attributes such as being environmentally friendly, readily available, biodegradable, non-harmful, relatively cheap and many others to mention a few. This paper opens readers mind into the detailed classifications, mechanisms and active functional groups of these eco-friendly OGCIs. Not only the corrosion efficiency calculation ways but also influencing factors on efficiency were presented. Plant extracts, pharmaceutical drugs, ionic liquids and synthetic inhibitors, as among major sources of OGCIs, used in preventing material corrosion in corrosive media were separately and comprehensively examined. The significance of values obtained from simulating presented mathematical models governing OGCIs kinetics, adsorption isotherm and adsorption thermodynamics was also included. In conclusion, beneficial recommendations for both current and prospective researchers in the field of Corrosion Engineering were presented.

SECM/SKP and SVET studies on mitigation of N80 steel corrosion by some polymers

Three polymers, namely PAMPS (P1), P(AMPS-co-NVP) (P2) and P(AMPS-co-DMC) (P3), synthesized by common solution polymerization were investigated as corrosion inhibitors for N80 steel in 3.5 wt% NaCl flooded with CO₂.

Theoretical, thermodynamic and electrochemical analysis of biotin drug as an impending corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 15% hydrochloric acid

The corrosion mitigation efficiency of biotin drug for mild steel in 15% hydrochloric acid was thoroughly investigated by weight loss and electrochemical methods. The surface morphology was studied by the contact angle, scanning electrochemical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy methods. Quantum chemical calculation and Fukui analysis were done to correlate the experimental and theoretical data. The influence of the concentration of inhibitor, immersion time, temperature, activation energy, enthalpy and entropy has been reported. The mitigation efficiency of biotin obtained by all methods was in good correlation with each other. Polarization studies revealed that biotin acted as a mixed inhibitor. The adsorption of biotin was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Surface studies showed the hydrophobic nature of the steel with inhibitor and vindicated the formation of a film on the metal surface that reduced the corrosion rate.

Heterocyclic Corrosion Inhibitors for J55 Steel in a Sweet Corrosive Medium

The inhibitory effect of two heterocyclic porphyrin compounds, specifically 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin palladium(II) (PF-1) and 4,4',4″,4‴-(porphyrin-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakis(benzoic acid) (PF-2), was studied in a sweet corrosion environment (3.5 wt % NaCl + CO₂) on J55 steel by means of weight loss and electrochemical methods. Surface changes were studied using contact angle, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. It was established that PF-2 showed the superlative inhibition efficiency of average of about 93% at 400 ppm concentration. The inductive behavior of the J55 steel surface in the presence of inhibitors was confirmed by SECM. The AFM further confirmed that the surface roughness was considerably decreased in the presence of porphyrins. The surface wettability of the steel was also investigated, and the results established the formation of a water-repellant layer on the surface when porphyrins are absorbed and layer became more hydrophobic with PF-2. Thermodynamics studies showed that the inhibition efficiencies of two compounds evaluated by all measurements follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

An impending inhibitor useful for the oil and gas production industry: Weight loss, electrochemical, surface and quantum chemical calculation

The influence of a Schiff base namely N,N'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(1-(4-methoxyphenyl) methanimine) (PM) on the corrosion of J55 and N80 steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution saturated with CO2 was evaluated using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Potentiodynamic polarization results suggested that the inhibitor acted as a mixed type inhibitor by reducing both anodic and cathodic reactions. The adsorption of PM on the J55 and N80 steel surface obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. XRD, contact angle, SEM, AFM and SECM studies revealed that the surface of the metal was quite unaffected after the addition of inhibitor. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamic simulation support the experimental results well.
