Simple construction based on epoxy-bonded super-hydrophobic anti-corrosion coating

Robust corrosion guard, mechanical and UV aging properties of metal complex/epoxy hybrid composite coating for C-steel applications

Incorporation of novel-prepared metal–organic complexes as crosslinking accelerators for multifunctional epoxy was on top of interest by coating formulators. The present work investigated the loading of mixed ligand metal complexes (Zr(IV) and Cu(II)) of metformin (MF) and 2.2′bipyridine (Bipy) against the free ligands as crosslinking modifiers via some epoxy coating formulations to assess their superb performances on the C-steel surface. Zr(IV) and Cu(II) demonstrated the minor energy gap (∆E) values at 0.190 au compared to free MF and Bipy according to the calculated energy values, and this behavior reflected their enhanced properties via epoxy coating applications. EIS measurements using high saline formation water as a corrosive medium were performed and offered that PA-DGEBA/MC-Cu coated film showed the superior resistance values (R_ct = 940 and R_c = 930 kΩ cm²). The accelerated corrosion salt spray experiment clarified that PA-DGEBA/MC-Cu coating achieved the least corrosion rate at 0.00049 mm/y and exhibited the highest protection efficiency of 99.84%. SEM/EDX combination survey affirmed the protective performance of the checked coatings. AFM microanalysis confirmed that surface-treated Cu(II) coating displayed the smoothest film surface with complete curing. Mechanical durability properties were evaluated and the obtained results illustrated that pull-off adhesion for PA-DGEBA/MC-Cu coated film fulfilled the highest adhesion strength at 6.3 MPa, the best bend character at 77, and the maximum impact resistance at 59.7 J. UV immovability trial was performed at 10 irradiance and 80 h duration. PA-DGEBA/MC-Cu coated film displayed the highest resistance to UV irradiance with blistering (#8 size and few frequencies) in addition to offering a minor gloss variation and matt properties.

Customizable Textile Sensors Based on Helical Core-Spun Yarns for Seamless Smart Garments

Most of the current sensors cannot meet the needs for seamless integration into the textile substrates of smart clothing and require improvements in terms of comfort and durability. Herein, smart textile-based sensors that have different sensing properties with integrated electronic elements were fabricated by knitting graphene-based helical conductive core-spun yarns. Such graphene-modified core-spun yarns are employed as building blocks of textile strain sensors, which showed high elasticity (ε > 300%), fast response time (120 ms), excellent reproducibility (over 10 000 cycles), wide sensing range (up to 100% strain), and low detection limit (0.3% strain). Thus, resistance-type strain sensors and capacitance-type pressure sensors composed of graphene-based smart fabric could be used to monitor large-scale limb movement and subtle human physiological signals. Such seamless smart textile-based fabric composed of superelastic helical conductive core-spun yarns shows great potential for fabricating an intelligent device to achieve real-time precise medicine and healthcare.

Synthesis of cationic acrylate copolyvidone-iodine nanoparticles with double active centers and their antibacterial application

Antibacterial materials are rapidly emerging as a primary component in the mitigation of bacterial pathogens, and functional polymers play a vital role in the preparation of antibacterial coatings. In this study, a novel antibacterial polymer with double active centers was synthesized. Firstly, using one-pot soap-free emulsion polymerization technology, the cationic acrylate copolymeric polyvidone (CACPV) was synthesized by copolymerization of four monomers with different functions, which were methyl methacrylate (MMA), N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MAPTS) and [3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]trimethylammonium chloride (MAPTAC). Secondly, using iodine complexation, the cationic acrylate copolyvidone-iodine (CACPVI) nanoparticles were prepared. After being characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle test, the antibacterial activity of CACPVI was evaluated against the typical human pathogens Escherichia coli (E. coli, Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, Gram-positive). Additionally, CACPVI was used to improve the antibacterial activities of some materials, such as ink, dye and coatings. It was found that CACPVI presented an excellent antibacterial synergy. When the antibacterial activities were more than 99% at a concentration of 40.00 μg mL-1, CACPVI exhibited long-term antibacterial performance as expected. The antibacterial mechanism of this synergy was also investigated. In summary, a novel antibacterial polymer material with double active centers was successfully synthesized and was widely applied in coating, dye and ink materials for minimizing bacterial infection.

Novel nitrogen doped carbon dots enhancing the anticorrosive performance of waterborne epoxy coatings

There are lots of research studies reporting the excellent performances of waterborne epoxy resin coatings to reduce environmental VOC levels. However, it has also been manifested that waterborne epoxy resin coatings do not have high corrosion resistance because of being hydrophilic. Herein, we utilized a kind of N doped carbon dot (N-CD) which has high ethanol solubility and low cytotoxicity to enhance the corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy resin coatings as a nanofiller. The N-CDs were obtained through a solvothermal method by using 4-aminosalicylic acid (ASA) as a precursor. The diameter and height of N-CDs confirmed by scanning probe microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are 3-5 nm. Corrosion resistance performance of the coatings without and with N-CDs is investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy by immersing them in 3.5 wt% NaCl (aq) for 70 days. The results indicate that the composite coatings with 0.5 wt% N-CDs show superior anticorrosive performance due to bond interactions between N-CDs and polymer chains, the defect repairing effect of N-CDs and the formation of compact Fe₂O₃ and Fe₃O₄ passivation layers.
