Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies on treatment efficacy in unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) often lack a predetermined treatment protocol, and little is known about the effects of specific vocal techniques on vocal outcomes and quality of life in UVFP patients. The purpose of this preliminary proof-of-concept study is to investigate the effects and feasibility of two intensive treatment protocols based on water-resistance therapy (WRT) and vocal function exercises (VFE). METHODS Ten participants with acute or chronic UVFP/paresis were recruited in the study and randomly assigned to the WRT or VFE group. Three of these participants presented with aphonia and could not complete the program as prescribed. The remaining participants completed an intensive therapy program with the assigned vocal technique. Before, during, and after the program, a multidimensional voice assessment was performed. Maximum phonation time, acoustic, perceptual, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were obtained. RESULTS WRT and VFE had positive clinical effects on instrumental and auditory-perceptual voice quality, glottal closure, and PROMs, but interindividual variability was high. Studies with larger sample sizes are necessary to confirm or refute these findings. CONCLUSION The WRT- and VFE-based therapy programs are both feasible and seem to elicit positive clinical changes in UVFP patients. Suggestions on how to improve the programs are provided, as well as considerations for implementation in clinical practice. Follow-up research is needed to examine the efficacy of both programs on group level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP), characterized by immobility of one vocal fold, results from injuries of recurrent laryngeal nerves. Voice therapy is a conservative intervention aiming to address these symptoms, but standard protocols are lacking. In this study, we provided an updated review of voice therapy for UVFP over the past 3 years and analyzed the effect of voice therapy from the perspective of voice assessment recommended by the guidelines of the European Laryngological Society and the Union of the European Phoniatricians in 2023. METHODS Following preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) 2020 statement, we searched the databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and SCOPUS, from their earliest records to December 1, 2023. Quality assessment utilized Cochrane Risk of Bias and Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions tools. Data extraction encompassed study design, participant characteristics, therapy protocols, and outcome measures, including subjective and objective assessments. We performed heterogeneity analysis by calculating the I2 statistic and meta-analysis by calculating the standardized difference of means and weighted mean differences. RESULTS Our systematic review and meta-analysis included 12 studies encompassing 459 patients. The review revealed a predominance of female participants across studies. Therapy protocols primarily included breathing control, laryngeal manipulation, and resonance training, often supplemented by home exercises. Outcome measures demonstrated significant improvements in subjective parameter: Voice Handicap Index ((standard mean difference) SMD = -1.51, P < 0.001), acoustic parameters: fundamental frequency (SMD = -0.38, P = 0.003), jitter (SMD = -0.97, P < 0.001), shimmer (SMD = -0.94, P < 0.001), and noise-to-harmonic ratio (SMD = -0.89, P < 0.001), and aerodynamic parameters: maximum phonation time (SMD = 1.29, P < 0.001), with early intervention yielding enhanced rate of complete glottal closure. DISCUSSION Two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involved patients aware of their allocation to the treatment group, and the remaining 10 studies were retrospective, leading to bias from deviations in the intended intervention. Subjective and aerodynamic parameter inconsistency was observed, but after excluding studies with the onset of UVFP greater than 12 months, the heterogeneity of VHI scores decreased. The funnel plot was grossly symmetrical in the publication bias test. Significant improvements were noted in subjective, acoustic, and aerodynamic outcomes after intervention. Besides, there were commonalities in protocols, such as breathing control, laryngeal manipulation, and resonance training, often supplemented by home exercises. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the validity of two videolaryngostroboscopic (VLS) rating tools to detect differences in VLS ratings between normophonic speakers, mild, and moderate-severely dysphonic speakers. METHODS Sixteen rigid VLS exams were obtained from four normophonic controls and 12 speakers with dysphonia (8 =mild, 4 =moderate-severe) secondary to laryngeal pathology. Eight clinicians rated nine vibratory VLS parameters for each exam using both the Voice-vibratory Assessment of Laryngeal Imaging (VALI) tool and a 100 mm visual analog scales (VAS). Ratings obtained for both right and left vocal folds (eg, mucosal wave, amplitude of vibration, nonvibrating portion) were averaged. One rating of overall severity of laryngeal function using a 100 mm VAS also was obtained. ANOVAs were used to evaluate differences in VLS parameters between three speaker groups (normophonic, mildly dysphonic, moderate-severely dysphonic) using these two rating tools. RESULTS There were statistically significant differences between controls and moderate-severely dysphonic speakers and for all VLS parameters except phase symmetry (P < 0.05) for both VALI and VAS ratings. Differences between mildly dysphonic and moderate-severely dysphonic and speakers were observed for 4/6 VALI ratings (mucosal wave, nonvibratory portions, phase closure, and regularity) and 5/6 parameters (mucosal wave, amplitude of vibration, nonvibratory portions, phase closure, and regularity) for VAS ratings. Significant differences between controls and mildly dysphonic speakers were not observed for VLS parameter rated using the VALI. There were significant differences between controls and mildly dysphonic speakers for 3/6 parameters (mucosal wave, amplitude of vibration, nonvibratory portion) using a VAS. Ratings of overall severity of laryngeal function differed between all levels of dysphonia severity. CONCLUSIONS Significant differences in VLS ratings were observed for comparisons of normophonic and moderate-severely dysphonic speakers and mild to moderately dysphonic speakers using the VALI and the VAS. However, the VAS scale appeared to better differentiate differences in VLS measures between normophonic speakers and those with mild dysphonia. Future studies should consider rating scale sensitivity when VLS rating tools are selected for clinical and research purposes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To determine the effect of clinical expertise on efficacy of Vocal Function Exercises (VFEs) as measured by change in percent of maximum phonation time goal attained. The hypothesis was that clinical expertise would result in greater increases in percent of maximum phonation time goal attained. STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. METHODS A convenience sample of 19 individuals with typical voice was recruited in a university academic clinic setting. All participants completed baseline assessment and 17 completed all study procedures. Participants were randomized to receive VFEs from an expert voice clinician with more than 40 years' experience (expert group (EG)) or from a master's student in Communication Sciences and Disorders trained in VFEs (novice group (NG)). The primary outcome measure was change in percent of maximum phonation time goal attained during VFE tasks 1 and 4. RESULTS Mean change scores for maximum phonation time were 27.71 (P = 0.001) and 25.31 (P = 0.003) for EG and NG, respectively. Both groups improved significantly on the primary outcome measure, but the difference between groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.759). A Hedges'-g effect size of -0.14 [-1.10, 0.81] was obtained comparing EG and NG groups, indicating a small negative effect of limited clinical expertise on VFE outcomes in individuals with typical voice. CONCLUSIONS Speech-language pathologists with varied levels of expertise are capable of efficaciously administering VFEs in individuals with typical voice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine the effectiveness of resonant voice therapy (RVT) in patients with functional voice disorder and to examine the subjective and objective voice changes after the therapy. STUDY DESIGN This study adopted an experimental research design with a pretest-posttest control group. METHOD Thirty-four women participated in the study-17 in the experimental group and 17 in the control group. Voice hygiene training and RVT were applied to the experimental group. The Turkish version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10) and GRBAS (Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, and Strain) scale were used for subjective voice assessment. Voice recordings were subjected to acoustic analysis on the PRAAT program. After an 8-week therapy program, the same process was repeated for post-test assessment. RESULTS In the voice analyses performed after RVT, which was applied to patients with functional voice disorders, the results of the acoustic analysis showed statistically significant differences in jitter, PPQ5, RAP, shimmer, APQ11, and NHR parameters. Subjective voice analysis indicated a statistically significant decrease in VHI-10 scores from 20.88 ± 5.33-9.06 ± 3.3 in the experimental group. The GRBAS score was 4.29 ± 1.2 before the therapy and 1.71 ± 1.1 after the therapy, which is a statistically significant decrease. The results point out that RVT has been effective in improving the objective and subjective parameters of patients with functional voice disorders. CONCLUSION RVT applied to patients with functional voice disorders provides significant improvement in acoustic and perceptual voice parameters. The RVT is an effective therapy method in the treatment of patients with functional voice disorders and should be considered as a therapeutic option.

Abstract
PURPOSE Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a neurological voice disorder that is often first treated by a speech-language pathologist (SLP). In literature, little consensus is found regarding voice therapy onset, duration, frequency, and content. The aim of the current study is to investigate the clinical practice of SLPs for treatment of UVFP regarding diagnostics and treatment characteristics. Additionally, the study examined the personal experiences of SLPs regarding UVFP care. METHOD An online survey was completed by 37 respondents, all SLPs with experience in treating UVFP. Demographic characteristics, experiences with voice assessments and treatment modalities were examined. Lastly, experiences and opinions of SLPs on evidence-based practice and their own clinical practice were surveyed. RESULTS Almost all respondents used a multidimensional voice assessment with findings from laryngovideostroboscopy to assess UVFP. Laryngeal electromyography is not yet integrated in regular clinical practices. The most commonly used vocal techniques were resonant voice exercises, laryngeal manipulation, semioccluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTEs), vocal hygiene, and Vocal Function Exercises, with SOVTEs most often considered effective. A total of 75% of the respondents feel confident treating UVFP, and 87.6% believe it is important to stay updated on evidence-based practice. Variation in therapy timing and dosage was observed, and 48.4% of SLPs usually started early voice therapy within 4 weeks after UVFP onset. CONCLUSION Flemish SLPs generally feel confident treating UVFP patients and show interest in improving evidence-based practice. Initiatives to train clinicians further in UVFP care and encouraging SLPs to provide practice-based evidence will enhance the knowledge base for evidence-based practice in UFVP.

The hypothesis was that provision of a maximum phonation time goal would result in greater increases in percent of maximum phonation time goal attained. STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. METHODS A convenience sample of individuals with normal voice were recruited in a university academic clinic setting. Of 34 participants who volunteered for the study, 28 completed baseline assessment and 19 completed all study procedures. Participants were randomized to complete VFEs with knowledge of their maximum phonation time goal (standard goal, SG), with knowledge of their maximum phonation time goal after three weeks (delayed goal, DG), or without knowledge of their maximum phonation time goal (no goal, NG). The primary outcome measure was percent of maximum phonation time goal obtained during VFE tasks one and four. RESULTS Mean change scores for maximum phonation time were 32.50 (SG), 34.55 (DG), and 21.02 (NG). Hedges' g effect sizes of -0.10 (-1.19, 0.99) and 0.56 (-0.55, 1.67) were obtained comparing DG and SG groups, and NG and SG groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Absence of maximum phonation time goal attenuates VFE efficacy; maximum phonation time goal is an active ingredient within VFEs.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is a diversity in treatment approaches for voice therapy in which aerodynamic treatment effects between the approaches are lacking. The evidence of voice treatments on the maximum phonation time (MPT) was quantified using the statistical approach of a network meta-analysis (NMA). DATA SOURCES Three databases and manual search from inception to November 2021 were evaluated. STUDY SELECTION Studies were considered which were reports of randomised controlled/clinical trials (RCT) evaluating the efficacy of a specific voice therapy treatment using MPT as an outcome measure in adult participants with voice disorders. Studies were excluded if participants had been diagnosed with neurological-motor-speech disorders or who were vocally healthy. Furthermore, no medical, pharmacological, or technical instrumental treatments were used. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Preferred Reporting Items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension statement guidelines were followed. Two reviewers independently screened citations, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias using PEDro scale. Random effects model was used for meta-analysis. RESULTS We identified finally 12 RCT studies (treatment groups n = 285, and control group without an intervention n = 62). Eight interventions were evaluated. The only effective intervention with a significant effect was vocal function exercises (VFE) (mean pre-post difference 6.16 s, 95% confidence interval, 1.18-11.13 s). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE VFE effectively improved MPT from pre- to post-treatment in comparison with other voice interventions which were identified in the present NMA. Further high-quality intervention studies with large samples sizes, multidimensional measures, and homogeneous groups of dysphonia are needed to support evidence-based practice in laryngology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the effect of maximally sustained phonation on efficacy of Vocal Function Exercises as measured by percent of maximum phonation time goal attained. The hypothesis was that maximally sustained phonation would result in greater improvements in percent of maximum phonation time goal attained. STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. METHODS A convenience sample of individuals with normal voice were recruited in a university academic clinic setting. Of 34 participants who volunteered for the study, 31 completed baseline assessment and 23 completed all study procedures. Participants were randomized to complete Vocal Function Exercises (traditional group TG), modified Vocal Function Exercises with reduced requirement for maximally sustained phonation (midpoint group MG), or modified Vocal Function Exercises with removed requirement for maximally sustained phonation (baseline group BG). The primary outcome measure was percent of maximum phonation time goal obtained during Vocal Function Exercises. RESULTS The MG (p = 0.008) and TG (p = 0.001) groups significantly improved percent of maximum phonation time goal attained after six weeks of exercise, while the BG group (p = 0.0202) did not (ɑ = 0.0125). Difference among groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.67, ɑ = 0.0125). Hedges' g effect sizes of 0.29 (-0.66, 1.25) and 0.51 (-0.57, 1.58) were obtained comparing MG and TG groups, and BG and TG groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Greater requirements for maximally sustained phonation improved efficacy of Vocal Function Exercises in enhancing normal voice as measured by percent of maximum phonation time goal attained. Maximally sustained phonation may be modified to some extent while preserving efficacy of Vocal Function Exercises, however complete elimination of maximally sustained phonation may attenuate improvement. Additional research in a clinical population is warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) can be caused by iatrogenic injury or tumor-induced damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Studies of comprehensive rehabilitation therapies for patients suffering from severe UVFP are limited. The purpose of this case report is to describe an improvement in complete aphonia after comprehensive rehabilitation therapies in a patient with severe UVFP due to a lung tumor. METHODS An 81-year-old woman with a history of bronchial adenoma had complete aphonia due to compression of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve by the tumor. Dynamic fibrolaryngoscope revealed paralysis of the left vocal fold. The patient was treated with interferential current therapy, vocal training, and kinesiology taping. Indicators of voice recovery were scored according to the grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, strain scale, and the voice handicap index. RESULTS After 10 days of comprehensive rehabilitation treatment, the patient recovered from complete aphonia to normal communication. The hoarseness and breathiness of patient were significantly improved. In addition, the grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, strain, and the voice handicap index scores changed from severe to mild or absent. CONCLUSION This case provided a novel comprehensive treatment for a patient with UVFP, which was safe, cost-effective, and easy to implement in clinic.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of clinician-based perceptual assessment of voice and computerized acoustic voice analysis as screening tests for vocal fold paresis or paralysis (VFP) after thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Methods This was a prospective study of 181 patients undergoing thyroid or parathyroid procedure with pre and postoperative laryngoscopic vocal fold inspection, perceptual voice assessment using grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, and strain (GRBAS) scale and acoustic voice analysis using the multi-dimensional voice program (MDVP). Patients were divided into 2 groups for comparison; those with new postoperative VFP and those without. Potential screening tools were evaluated using the receiving operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results Fourteen (6.6%) patients had a new postoperative VFP. Postoperative GRBAS scores were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in patients with VFP compared to those without. However, there were no statistically significant differences in MDVP values between the groups. Postoperative GRBAS grade score (cut off > 0) had the best sensitivity, 93%, for predicting VFP, but the specificity was only 50%. Postoperative jitter (cut off > 1.60) in MDVP had a good specificity, 90%, but only 50% sensitivity. Combining all the GRBAS and MDVP variables with P < 0.05 in the ROC analysis yielded a test with 100% sensitivity and 55% specificity. Conclusions Physician-based perceptual voice assessment has a high sensitivity for detecting postoperative VFP, but the specificity is poor. The risk of VFP is low in patients with completely normal voice at discharge. However, routine laryngoscopy after thyroid and parathyroid surgery is still the most reliable exam for VFP screening.

Abstract
PURPOSE In cases of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP), voice disorders caused by glottic insufficiency can lead to a considerable reduction in the patient's quality of life. Voice therapy (VT) is an effective treatment that must be started early after the onset of vocal fold paralysis. This study examined the effect of early VT for patients with UVFP occurring after esophagectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who had residual UVFP at 1 month postoperatively after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between November 2014 and March 2017 were evaluated. Seventeen patients were divided into the VT group (n = 6) and non-VT group (n = 11). We compared these two groups and retrospectively examined the effect of early VT. The study endpoints included aerodynamic tests, laryngeal endoscopy, laryngeal stroboscopy, and glottal closure. All of these evaluations were performed at preoperatively and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS Subglottal pressure reduced notably in the VT group, and both the mean flow rate and maximum phonation time tended to improve after VT. Conversely, there were no significant differences in MFR and MPT in the non-VT group. Furthermore, although UVFP remained after VT, we achieved glottal closure for all three patients. Conversely, only two of the six patients with glottic insufficiency in the non-VT group achieved glottal closure. CONCLUSION VT may be effective for improving impaired vocal function in patients with UVFP. It is reasonable to expect that VT can be initiated 1 month after the onset of vocal fold paralysis.

Abstract
The Korean Society of Laryngology, Phoniatrics and Logopedics appointed a task force to establish clinical practice guidelines for the management of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). These guidelines cover a comprehensive range of management-related factors, including the diagnosis and treatment of UVFP, and provide in-depth information based on current, up-to-date knowledge. Detailed evidence profiles are provided for each recommendation. The CORE databases, including OVID Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and KoreaMed, were searched to identify all relevant papers, using a predefined search strategy. When insufficient evidence existed, expert opinions and Delphi questionnaires were used to fill the evidence gap. The committee developed 16 evidence-based recommendations in six categories: initial evaluation (R1–4), spontaneous recovery (R5), medical treatment (R6), surgical treatment (R7–14), voice therapy (R15), and aspiration prevention (R16). The goal of these guidelines is to assist general otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists who are primarily responsible for treating patients with UVFP. These guidelines are also intended to facilitate understanding of the condition among other health-care providers, including primary care physicians, nurses, and policy-makers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evaluation of trends and utilization of speech-language-pathology (SLP) services, including stroboscopy, before and after medialization laryngoplasty (ML) over 11 years. METHODS Retrospective national US database study conducted using OptumLabs Data Warehouse. Study cohort included patients (age ≥18 years) who underwent ML between January 2007 and December 2016. Primary outcomes were rates of SLP visits in the 12 months before and 12 months after ML. Linear regression analysis was performed assessing for trends utilization across years. Secondary outcomes were predictors of utilization After-ML using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS 1114 patients met criteria. Services, including stroboscopy, were utilized by 774 (69%) Before-ML and 697 (63%) After-ML. SLP services, excluding stroboscopy, were utilized by 512 (46%) Before-ML and 478 (43%) After-ML. Vocal cord paralysis was the most common diagnosis, 945 (84.8%) patients. Other service billed were stroboscopy, [Before-ML 676 (60.7%); After-ML 567 (50.9%)], voice evaluation [Before-ML 431(38.7%); After-ML 366 (32.9%)], voice therapy [Before-ML 309 (27.7%); After-ML 339 (30.4%)], laryngeal function studies, [Before-ML 175 (15.7%); After-ML 164 (14.7%)], swallow evaluations [Before-ML 150 (13.5%); After-ML 90 (8.1%)], and swallow therapy [Before-ML 53 (4.8%); After-ML 47 (4.2%)]. SLP utilization Before-ML predicted SLP utilization After-ML [Odds Ratio (95% Confidence Interval): 9.31 (6.78, 12.77)]. Nearly half (49%) of visits occurred in the 6 months around ML. Of those who had voice therapy, the majority (73.7%) had a total of 1 to 5 sessions. CONCLUSION Based on this retrospective US national database study, SLP services and stroboscopy are a complementary component of assessment and treatment of patients who undergo ML with the majority of services occurring in the 3 months before and after ML. Future work would benefit from outcome data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment approaches for voice therapy are diverse, yet their differential effects are not well understood. Evaluations of treatment effects across approaches are important for clinical guidance and evidence-based practice. OBJECTIVE OF REVIEW To quantify the evidence of treatment effectiveness on the outcome measure Voice Handicap Index with the 30-items (VHI-30) from existing randomised controlled/clinical trials (RCT) of voice therapy using the statistical approach of a network meta-analysis (NMA) with a random effects model. TYPE OF REVIEW Meta-analysis. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched in MEDLINE (PubMed, 1950 to 2019), Embase (1974 to 2019) and Science Citation Index (1994 to 2019) using five key terms. The inclusion criteria were reports of randomised controlled/clinical trials (RCTs) published in English or German which evaluated the effectiveness of a specific voice therapy treatment using VHI-30 as an outcome measure in adult participants with non-organic or organic voice disorders. Studies were excluded if participants had been diagnosed with neurological motor speech disorders or who were vocally healthy. Furthermore, no medical, pharmacological or instrumental (eg voice amplification) treatments were considered. EVALUATION METHOD The primary outcome variable was VHI-30 with a score from 0 to 120. The pre-post treatment change in VHI-30 scores was an average score of 13 points related to various VHI-30 test-retest results. RESULTS We retrieved 464 publications (ie with duplicates) and included 13 RCTs, which evaluated nine interventions, in the final analysis. The most effective intervention with a significant and clinically relevant effect was Stretch-and-Flow Phonation (SFP) (mean pre-post difference -28.37, 95% confidence interval [CI], -43.05 to-13.68). Resonant Voice (RV), the Comprehensive Voice Rehabilitation Program (CVRP) and Vocal Function Exercises (VFE) also demonstrated significant improvements. CONCLUSIONS Of the nine voice interventions identified with the present NMA, SFP, RVT, CVRP, and VFE effectively improved VHI-30 scores from pre- to post-treatment. SFP proved to be the most significant and clinically relevant treatment. Further contributions of high-quality intervention studies are needed to support evidence-based practice in vocology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Unilateral vocal folds paralysis is a disorder that affects a patient's quality-of-life by disturbing their phonation, breathing, and swallowing activities. This systematic review aimed to estimate the efficacy of voice treatment on the vocal fold motility in adult patients with unilateral vocal folds paralysis. METHODS PubMed, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and Web of Science were searched for retrospective and prospective cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional with comparative studies with adults that were published between 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2018. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria a total of 10 studies containing morpho-functional evaluation results were included in the analysis. Pooled data analysis of the motility of the vocal folds before and after voice therapy allowed inferring about the efficacy of voice therapy intervention in patients with unilateral vocal folds paralysis. A random-effect model was used to estimate the effect size. Publication bias was considered. RESULTS The pooled data analysis of the visual-perceptual measures revealed that vocal fold motility improved in 72% (95% CI: 64.0-80.0) of all patients after the therapeutic interventions. The inconsistency index (I2 = 18.35%) of the studies included in this meta-analysis revealed an extremely low heterogeneity. Funnel plot and Cochran's Q test showed no publication bias. The systematic review was limited to only English language articles. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis supports the evidence that voice therapy intervention can have a positive effect on the vocal fold motility, that is, they can improve the glottal gap closure, irrespective of the exercises and techniques used.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a common cause of neurogenic dysphonia resulting in glottal insufficiency. To restore glottal sufficiency and reduce the presenting dysphonia, treatment involving either surgical intervention, voice therapy or a combination of the two is typically provided. Currently, there is no consensus for the most effective voice treatment for UVFP. This results in an inability to compare current studies, and a lack of treatment effectiveness for the management of UVFP. This study aims to review the most recent literature for the management of dysphonia due to UVFP to establish the current evidence base for voice treatment options. RECENT FINDINGS There was found to be a lack of consistency in the rationale, selection and timing of the surgical intervention and/or voice therapy being provided for patients with UVFP. SUMMARY Further consensus is required for the rationale and selection of voice treatment prescriptions for the management of UVFP in order to improve treatment effectiveness and voice outcomes in patients with UVFP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare indirect estimates of transglottal airflow rate using measures of phonation quotient with direct measures of mean airflow rate derived from a pneumotachograph. STUDY DESIGN This study used prospective, repeated measures design. METHODS Nineteen male and female participants, matched for age, completed tasks for maximum phonation time and vital capacity in addition to the comfortable sustained phonation protocol of the Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS), Model 6600. Phonation quotient was calculated from the vital capacity and phonation time measures, whereas actual transglottal airflow was obtained from the flow waveforms recorded on the PAS system. Statistical analyses compared transglottal airflow rate measures as a function of instrument and separately as a function of gender. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were present only as a function of gender on airflow measures but not as a function of the instrument. There were no interaction effects present between instrument and gender. CONCLUSIONS Phonation quotient can be used as an estimate of transglottal airflow in the absence of a pneumotachograph-based system.
