Abstract
Dysphonia is a prevalent condition that can impact individuals across all age groups. It occurs when normal voice quality is altered, caused by structural and/or functional issues. Evaluation and assessment from clinicians are warranted if dysphonia persists for more than four weeks and/or is coupled with risk factors or other concerning clinical manifestations. Additionally, voice disorders can increase the risk of depression and anxiety disorders, as well as raise stress levels and lower self-reported health indicators. Dysphonia can have a substantial influence on interpersonal interactions and lower overall quality of life since effective communication relies significantly on spoken language. Hence, managing dysphonia is essential for enhancing communication abilities, improving quality of life, maintaining vocational functioning, promoting psychological well-being, and addressing underlying health concerns. Speech and language therapy, medical management, surgery, or a combination of the aforementioned are all possible treatments for dysphonia. Speech and language therapy is often the first-line treatment option for dysphonia patients who do not meet the criteria for surgical intervention. Voice therapy is often beneficial and remains the first line of treatment, even when patients approach with benign vocal fold nodules. A well-designed voice therapy program improves both the quality of life and vocal performance. The majority of the studies in the existing literature advocate for and report beneficial outcomes associated with voice therapy; however, more research is needed to provide evidence-based findings to guide clinical practice and achieve optimal outcomes. This comprehensive review elaborately highlights the utilization and efficacy of various voice therapeutic modalities utilized for the management of dysphonia in light of current literature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The body of literature discussing the acoustic, aerodynamic, perceptual, and morphometric changes that occur during and after semi-occluded vocal tract exercise (SOVTE) has dramatically expanded within the past 20 years. The current study integrates the literature on SOVTE from the 1990s onward, reviewing the technique's clinically relevant effects in vocally untrained adults both with and without dysphonia. The study aims to give clinicians actionable information on how SOVTEs alter vocal function in both normal and pathological states. METHODS The author queried the MEDLINE database for combinations of search terms related to semi-occluded vocal tract exercise. To improve article identification, the author also performed iterative citation webbing in which the reference lists of each article selected for full-text screening were cross-referenced against the articles returned in the initial MEDLINE search. Articles identified by iterative citation webbing that did not appear in the initial MEDLINE search were then screened individually. The second author independently verified adherence to the review's inclusion and exclusion criteria in both the initial search and data extraction phases. RESULTS The initial MEDLINE search returned 869 articles, 111 of which passed the title and abstract screening phase. Iterative citation webbing returned an additional 20 studies, resulting in a total of 131 articles that qualified for full-text screening. 53 articles passed full-text screening and were included in the current review. DISCUSSION Semi-occluded vocal tract exercise increases the inertive reactance of the glottis, vocal tract, and air column, as well as introducing flow resistance at the level of the lips or velopharyngeal port. Each of these mechanisms yields downstream acoustic, aerodynamic, morphometric, and perceptual changes, including reductions in phonation threshold pressure and perceived phonatory effort, improved spectral characteristics of the acoustic signal, attenuation of vocal fold impact stress as indexed by various metrics such as maximum area declination rate, and alterations to the physical dimensions of the vocal tract. Although few studies examined the duration of these changes post exercise, several RCTs support the assertion that SOVTE's effects can be sustained with regular practice over weeks or months, regardless of current vocal health status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysphonia is a disorder characterized by an alteration in the overall quality of the voice which reduces quality of life. Therefore, we assessed the effectiveness of SOVTEs in the management of dysfunctional and organic dysphonia for acoustic, perceptual-auditive, aerodynamic parameters and self-perception of the disease. METHODS a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Findings were reported according to the PRISMA statement. Five databases were searched for RCTs and non- or quasi-RCTs. Studies were independently assessed using the Cochrane Risk of bias (RoB) and ROBINS-I tools. Effect sizes (ES) were calculated only at post-treatment. GRADE criteria were used to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS eight articles were included. Studies investigated several SOVTEs, alone or in combination. None of the study was completely judged at low RoB. The quality of evidence resulted very low for each analysis. SOVTEs revealed to be statistically more effective than control interventions in improving F0 (ES: -14.42; CI 95%: -27.16, -1.69); P = 0.03), whereas shimmer did not change significantly (ES: -0.43; CI 95%:-02.02, 1.15; P = 0.59). Not significant changes in favor of control groups were found for jitter (ES: 0.13; CI 95%: -0.14, 0.40; P = 0.34) and overall gravity in the perceptual-auditory evaluation (ES: 0.13 CI 95%: -0.50, 0.77; P = 0. 68). Among secondary outcomes, evidence suggested that SOVTEs are more effective than control interventions in Psub reduction (ES: -1.47; CI 95%: -2.84, -0.10; P = 0.03); self-assessment resulted not significantly in favor of SOVTEs (VHI/VRQoL: ES -0.23; CI 95% -1.14, 0.69; P = 0.63 and VTDS/VDSI: ES -4.85, CI 95% -25.13, 15.42; P = 0.64). CONCLUSION results obtained showed that voice therapy based on SOVTEs is not to consider significantly superior if compared to other treatments, even if a favorable trend was detected and should be taken into consideration. Further high-quality RCTs on specific SOVTEs are recommended to produce better-quality evidence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To map the evidence on vocal intervention in people over 18 years old. METHODS A literature search was conducted using the following electronic databases: Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), LIVIVO, Pubmed/Medline, Scopus, SpeechBITE, and Web of Science. Gray literature was also used as an information source through searches on Google Scholar, Open Grey, ProQuest Dissertation and Thesis, and the Brazilian digital library of theses and dissertations. Systematic reviews (SR) with a population of individuals over 18 years old were included. The included reviews addressed speech-language pathology interventions in the vocal area with reports of their respective outcome. The methodological quality of the included systematic reviews was analyzed using the AMSTAR II tool. Quantitative analysis was performed by frequency distribution, and qualitative research was analyzed through narrative synthesis. RESULTS A total of 2,443 references were retrieved, among which 20 studies met the inclusion criteria. The included studies had critically low quality, lacking the use of population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) components. Among the included SRs, 40% were made in Brazil, 45% were published in the Journal of Voice, and 75% analyzed dysphonic patients. The most frequent intervention was voice therapy (direct therapy associated with indirect therapy approaches). Positive results were observed in most of the outcomes for all studies. CONCLUSION Voice therapy was described as inducing positive effects for voice rehabilitation. However, due to the critically low quality of studies, the literature did not enable us to understand the best results for each intervention. Well-designed studies are necessary to clarify the relationship between the intervention goal and how the intervention was evaluated.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effectiveness of vocal therapy with the use of low-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) followed by voice exercises on vocal fold lesion size, vocal quality and quality of life in dysphonic women. METHODS 27 women with vocal nodules participated, randomized into to: experimental group (EG)-13 women who received vocal therapy with 12 sessions of 20 min of TENS application (pulse:200μs, frequency:10Hz, motor threshold intensity, electrodes positioned in the trapezius muscle [descending fibers and submandibular region, bilaterally]). Each TENS session was followed by 30 min of vocal exercises; and the Control Group (CG)- 14 women who received 12 sessions with 20 min of application of placebo TENS (same conditions EG, but without receiving the stimulus electric), followed by 30 min of vocal exercise. Before, immediately after and one month after vocal therapy, participants underwent vocal recording for acoustic analysis, vocal self-assessment, laryngological examination and answered voice-related quality of life (V-RQOL) protocol. RESULTS There was reduction in the size of vocal fold lesions only in the EG, immediately after treatment and one month after treatment. Acoustic analysis showed decreases in SPI values immediately after and one month after treatment in both groups. There was improvement in voice self-perception in both groups after treatment and one month after, but no significant difference in V-RQOL values. CONCLUSION TENS followed by vocal exercises produced results similar to vocal therapy without TENS regarding voice quality, self-perception and quality of life in voice. However, vocal therapy with low-frequency TENS followed by vocal exercise was effective in reducing vocal fold lesion size in dysphonic women.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated if outcomes differ between voice therapy groups systematically using carryover strategies (attempts to generalize new vocal skills outside the clinic) and voice therapy with no emphasis on any generalizing process (here referred to as traditional voice therapy). METHOD A randomized controlled trial was conducted. Participants (53 female teachers with voice disorders) were randomly allocated into three groups: Carryover (a group receiving voice therapy using carryover strategies), Trad (a group receiving voice therapy with no emphasis on any generalizing process), Controls (a group on an eight-week non-therapy period). Prior to the trial a direct laryngoscopy was performed with a videolaryngostroboscopy system and/or nasofaryngofiberoscope with stroboscopy. Before and after therapy and at follow-up a voice evaluation protocol was implemented consisting of subjective assessments (Questionnaire on Voice Symptoms, and the Voice Activity and Participation Profile; VAPP), and objective measurements (voice sample recordings, acoustic analysis [SPL, sound pressure level; f0, fundamental frequency; alpha-ratio, tilt of the sound spectrum slope]). RESULTS No differences were found between the groups. Several significant changes occurred within the groups between initial phase vs. post-therapy and initial phase vs. follow-up. In the Carryover group text reading the alpha-ratio became lower (P = 0.011) and spontaneous speech f0 increased (P = 0.024) after the therapy and [a:] SPL increased (P = 0.042) at follow-up. In the Trad group post-therapy [a:] alpha-ratio became lower (P = 0.012) and spontaneous speech f0 decreased (P = 0.034). After therapy VAPP scores showed improvement in voice-related quality of life in both therapy groups (Carryover P = 0.003; Trad P = 0.01) but only in Carryover at follow-up (P = 0.000). Voice symptoms decreased in the Carryover group post-therapy (P = 0.001) and at follow-up (P = 0.000) and after Controls' eight-week non-therapy period (P = 0.003). CONCLUSION The results showed that carryover strategies give no additional advantages in voice therapy. However, the decreasing trend in the Carryover group's voice complaints at follow-up would suggest that carryover strategies may have long-lasting effects. The results also confirm that voice therapy is efficient in improving voice-related quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE in order to contribute of the collective actions of the teacher's vocal health, the specific goal was to build a guide gathering the appliable didactic content in these actions. That being, the stages performed in the instrument elaboration of the denominated Teachers' Vocal Health Guide (TVHG) will be presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS The elaboration process of the guide is composed of three stages: (1) parameter selection to compose the guide based on a literature review; (2) submission to a specialist examining board, with the calculation of the Content Validity Index (CVI) and the Kappa agreement coefficient; (3) content validation - the instrument was submitted to an analysis of a judges committee, and from the results the Cronbach Alfa coefficient and the CVI were calculated. RESULTS The elaboration of the TVHG underwent three stages. In the first stage, called parameter selection, 20 didactic contents were found, consisting of 14 theoretical and six practices. In the second stage, an evaluation of the guide was performed by a specialist examining board and two contents were excluded since their CVI was below 8. The result of the Kappa Coefficient Calculation was 0.281. In the third stage, the TVHG underwent evaluation of a new group denominated judges committee, and the items were punctuated as very relevant and completely relevant. The result of the Cronbach Alfa coefficient for the instrument with 18 items was 0.721, and this value categorizes the instrument as valid. It is necessary to continue the process of instrument validation, possibly investigating the applicability of TVHG in the teachers' opinion. CONCLUSION The current study presents the TVHG from the description of the three stages performed to elaborate a systematized instrument denominated TVHG, which suggests a gathering of didactic content that are appliable in collective actions of vocal health with this professional category.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the applicability of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA)-VOICE scale before and after a therapeutic program for functional balance in voice production. PATIENTS AND METHODS The sample comprised 26 adult participants (18 female) from the -Brazilian Public Healthcare System. The URICA-VOICE scale was applied prior to the intervention and after 10 sessions of a therapeutic program. RESULTS The motivational stage values were significantly increased after the intervention compared with the first application of the scale. Precontemplation and action were the stages most commonly reported by the participants. Significant differences were found in 6 statements of the URICA-VOICE scale after voice therapy. CONCLUSIONS The motivational stage of the participants improved after voice therapy. Being motivated is important for adherence to behavioral changes regarding the voice, and this study shows that using the URICA-VOICE scale in clinical practice is essential to measure patient performance in the voice therapy process, as well as to determine the ideal moment of discharge.
