Abstract
OBJECTIVE This integrative review aims to determine the quality level of evidence on using surface electromyography (sEMG) as a diagnostic tool in identifying muscle tension dysphonia. METHOD Two independent reviewers used one search engine and five databases to identify sEMG studies published between January 1980 and December 2020, using a set of specified search terms related to muscle tension dysphonia. The selected articles were systematically evaluated by two independent raters using a modified critical appraisal of diagnostic evidence (m-CADE) form. RESULTS Nine articles that satisfied the inclusion criteria were selected from among 576 studies for evaluation. These nine studies showed varied methodological approaches in sEMG measurements, including electrode configuration and position, tasks used in sEMG data collection, outcome measure, and normalization procedures. Five studies showed relatively high m-CADE scores, which were indicative of "suggestive validity and compelling importance". Two studies were rated as "suggestive validity and importance", while two remaining studies were rated as "less suggestive or equivocal validity and importance". CONCLUSIONS The review found a moderate level of evidence that sEMG can be a potentially useful tool with diagnostic value in identifying muscle tension dysphonia. However, evidence is not yet available to determine the diagnostic accuracy of sEMG for muscle tension dysphonia. More studies are needed, and it is recommended that future studies involving sEMG and reference measurements should be undertaken using a blinding procedure in order to control any subjective biases. Details of the population that the sEMG has been tested on should be outlined clearly so that spectrum bias could be eliminated or minimized in the application process. Furthermore, it is suggested that a reliable and valid protocol in collecting sEMG data during speech should be developed to minimize the variability of sEMG measures in assessing muscle activities during speech.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to examine the laryngeal palpatory scale (LPS) to ascertain possible correlation with neck surface electromyography (sEMG). METHODS Two otolaryngologists and one certified speech-language pathologist assessed 21 participants (seven women and 14 men; with a mean age of 42.8 years; ranged: 21 to 70 years) with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) diagnosed with the current version of the LPS rating system. Consequently, relationships between LPS and objective measures of sEMG were evaluated using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (r). RESULTS The results show that there was a low to moderate between correlations, (statistically positive and significant in 10 correlations among the examined items/states). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, low-moderate positive correlations between sEMG and LPS ratings were found with particular strength for LPS ratings of tightness and ratings made during dynamic tasks. Further investigations can provide useful evidence for researchers and clinicians to document treatment outcomes by using LPS and sEMG in patients with MTD and leading to the more standardized care and improved information about patient progress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was aimed at comparing perilaryngeal pressure pain thresholds (PPT) among asymptomatic women, women with bruxism, and women with odynophonia. DESIGN Observational cross-sectional study. METHODS Eighty-four women whose age mean was 23.75 (SD, 3.02) years were grouped according to inclusion and exclusion criteria into a group of asymptomatic women (G1), another group of women with bruxism (G2), and another of women with odynophonia (G3). Palpation was used to identify regions of interest for this study, and an analog algometer was used to evaluate perilaryngeal PPT in the previously localized regions. Each PPT evaluation was done twice. RESULTS G1 PPT mean were between 1.35 (SD, 0.20) and 2.29 (SD, 0.28) kg/cm2, G2 PPT mean were found between 0.85 (SD, 0.12) and 1.78 (SD, 0.23) kg/cm2, and G3 PPT mean were located between 0.71 (SD, 0.11) and 1.45 (SD, 0.19) kg/cm2. Differences were observed between PPT in the three groups evaluated (P < 0.05). The intra-evaluator agreement between the evaluations performed fluctuated between 60.71% (κ = 0.51) and 92.86% (κ = 0.91). CONCLUSIONS There are significant differences between the perilaryngeal PPT of asymptomatic women, women with bruxism, and women with odynophonia. Asymptomatic women had the highest PPT, while odynophonia sufferers had the lowest.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Palpation of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles is a common part of examination performed by otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists on individuals presenting with voice complaints, thought to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning. While research has identified a significant relationship between thyrohyoid tension and hyperfunctional voice disorders, we are not aware of any studies exploring correlations between thyrohyoid posture during palpation and the full spectrum of voice disorders. This study aims to identify whether patterns in thyrohyoid posture at rest and during phonation can be related to stroboscopic findings and voice disorder diagnoses. METHODS A multidisciplinary team of three laryngologists and three speech-language pathologists participated in data collection during 47 new patient visits for voice complaints. Each patient underwent neck palpation and evaluation of thyrohyoid space at rest and during phonation by two independent raters. Clinicians then used stroboscopy to rate glottal closure and supraglottic activity as part of determining primary diagnosis. RESULTS Strong inter-rater agreement was found for ratings of thyrohyoid space posture both at rest (κ = 0.93) and during phonation (κ = 0.80). Findings revealed no significant correlations between patterns of thyrohyoid posture and laryngoscopic findings or primary diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that the presented method of laryngeal palpation is a reliable measure for assessing thyrohyoid posture at rest and during phonation. Lack of significant correlation between palpation ratings and other collected measures suggests that this method of palpation is not a useful tool for predicting laryngoscopic findings or voice diagnoses. Laryngeal palpation may still be useful in predicting extrinsic laryngeal muscle tension and guiding treatment planning; however, further research exploring the validity of laryngeal palpation as a measure of extrinsic laryngeal muscle tension is needed, as well as studies that include patient-reported measures and repeated measurements of thyrohyoid posture over time to explore whether thyrohyoid posture is impacted by other factors.

The numerous studies on the various programs, methods, and techniques of traditional rehabilitation techniques, and many with high quality of evidence, allow us to consider such procedures relatively well described, safe, and with known effects, accounting for the treatment of various vocal disorders. The scientific evidence with traditional techniques is recognized worldwide. New fronts of evolution, with electrostimulation or photobiomodulation used to handle voice problems, seem to be promising as coadjutant approaches. There are more studies on electrostimulation in vocal rehabilitation than with photobiomodulation; however, scientific evidence for these two modern techniques is still limited. Knowledge and caution are required for the application of either technique.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) signs and symptoms, as well as to analyze the results of vocal parameters, the physical clinical examination of muscle palpation, the self-perception of vocal symptoms, vocal pain, and fatigue of women with MTD and compare them with women with healthy voices. METHODS a cross-sectional study with 45 women (23 with MTD and 22 controls), similar median age between groups. The speech-language and otorhinolaryngological evaluation determined the diagnosis of MTD. All participants responded to the Voice Symptoms Scale (VoiSS), Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI), and Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) protocols. They were also assessed by a palpatory evaluation of the perilaryngeal musculature, auditory-perceptual evaluation, and acoustic analysis of the voice fundamental frequency. The speech sample included sustained vowels "a", "i" and "e" and connected speech, recorded in a silent environment, and submitted to auditory-perceptual evaluation by three judges. In the acoustic analysis, the fundamental frequency and maximum phonation times were extracted. RESULTS The MTD group had worse results in VoiSS, VFI, and NMQ, in addition to greater resistance to palpation and a high vertical position of the larynx. The vocal parameters also showed greater deviation in the MTD group, except for the fundamental frequency. There was no relationship between vocal symptoms, fatigue, or pain with the general degree of dysphonia in the MTD group, indicating important symptoms in mild or moderate vocal deviations. CONCLUSION women with MTD presented vocal symptoms, vocal fatigue, muscle pain, resistance to palpation and deviated vocal parameters when compared to vocally healthy women.
