Anomalous vasculature in the neck diagnosed by ultrasound

Anomalous vascular anatomy was detected in the neck of a 52-year-old female with a Klippel-Feil anomaly. Ultrasound identified three separate arteries in the left carotid sheath without any branching or bifurcations. The vascular waveforms were used to identify the vessels as the internal carotid artery, external carotid artery and vertebral artery. This rare vascular anomaly was confirmed with CT angiography.

Congenital Aplasia of the Common Carotid Artery: A Comprehensive Review

In an attempt to describe the morphofunctional consequences of uni- and bilateral aplasia of the common carotid artery (CCA), which is usually a vascular source of the external carotid (ECA) and internal carotid (ICA) arteries, we investigated online databases of anatomical and clinical papers published from the 18th century to the present day. We found 87 recorded cases of uni- and bilateral CCA aplasia in subjects from the first hours to the eighth decade of life, which had been discovered in 14 (known) countries. Four crucial parameters were described: the embryology of the carotid arteries, morphophysiology of the carotid arteries, CCA aplasia, and unilateral versus bilateral CCA aplasia, including history, general data, diagnosing, vascular sources, caliber, course of the separated ECA and ICA, associated vascular variants, and pathological disorders. To complete the knowledge of the morphofunctional consequences of the absence of some artery of the carotid system, and risking the possibility of repeating some words, as "carotid artery", or "carotid aplasia" and the headings from our previous article about bilateral ICA absence, this review is the first in the literature that recorded all cases of the CCA aplasia published and/or cited for the past 233 years. Main characteristic of the CCA absence is its association with 21 different diseases, among which the aneurysms were in 13.69% of cases, and 17.80% of cases were without pathology.

Revascularization for failed carotid artery stenting in a patient with a rare vertebral artery anomaly

There is a growing cohort of patients requiring complex revascularization for failed carotid artery stenting. This revascularization can be complex in patients with coexisting supra-aortic vascular anomalies. Aberrant origin of the vertebral artery (VA) is an example of such an anomaly. Although VA anomalies are rare, their occurrence is of significant importance in endovascular and open vascular procedures. We report a case of a 78-year-old man with rare VA anomaly, whose left internal carotid artery ostium was inadvertently covered during a carotid artery stenting procedure. We discuss the carotid artery revascularization in this patient as well as the relevant literature.

Incidental finding of an absent left common carotid artery

We describe a case of a young woman evaluated for Raynaud's phenomenon in whom an extremely rare variation, the absence of the left common carotid artery, was incidentally detected as an isolated finding. The detection of vascular anomalies may be important for future endovascular or surgical interventions.

Absent right common carotid artery associated with aberrant right subclavian artery

Rarely, the external and internal carotid arteries arise separately from the brachiocephalic trunk and right subclavian artery (SA) or the aortic arch and reflect the absence of a common carotid artery (CCA). We report a 45-year-old man with absent right CCA associated with aberrant right SA, an extremely rare combination, diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) angiography during follow-up for postoperative aortic dissection. Retrospective careful observation of preoperative postcontrast CT revealed the absent right CCA. Previously reported arch variations associated with absent CCA include cervical aortic arch, double aortic arch, and right aortic arch.
