The effect of knee flexor and extensor fatigue on shock absorption during cutting movements after a jump landing

Impact of different landing heights on the contact force in the medial tibiofemoral compartment and the surrounding muscle force characteristics in drop jumps

This study explored the impact of landing height on the tibiofemoral joint's medial compartment force (MCF) during drop jumps to help athletes prevent knee injury. Experienced male participants (N = 16) performed drop jumps with landing heights from 0.15 m to 0.75 m. Kinematic/kinetic parameters were collected using a motion capture system and a three-dimensional force platform. The Med-Lat Knee model was used to calculate biomechanical indicators of the knee joint, and data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and one-dimensional statistical parametric mapping (SPM1d). Findings indicated that landing height significantly affected the anterior-posterior and vertical MCF, flexion-extension torque, internal-external rotation torque, and vertical ground reaction force (p<0.05)-all increasing with elevated landing height-and significantly impacted the generated force of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and vastus intermedius (p<0.05). SPM1d analysis confirmed these results within specific time intervals. Thus, both the knee moment and the MCF exhibited similar coordinated changes during drop jumps, indicating that these may be adaptive movement strategy. The impact of varying drop jump heights on muscle groups around the knee joint varied suggests that different heights induce specific muscular responses and improve muscle coordination to prevent knee joint injuries.

Are Previous Joint Injuries Associated with Muscle Performance in Volleyball Athletes? *

Objective  The aim of the present study is to determine whether previous shoulder and knee injuries were associated with isokinetic fatigue index and agonist/antagonist ratio of shoulder internal/external rotators and knee flexors/extensors in male volleyball athletes.

Methods  The current study is a cross-sectional investigation of 49 male elite volleyball players competing at a high level in Brazil. Isokinetic fatigue index and agonist/antagonist profiles were assessed during the preseason. Additionally, in order to record previous injuries, the athletes answered a standardized questionnaire. We conducted a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to determine the association strength and the clinically relevant cut-off point for variables presenting statistical significance for the area under the curve (AUC) (α = 0.05). An independent t-test was used to compare isokinetic variables between athletes with and without previous injury (α = 0.05).

Results  The results of the ROC curve analysis indicated that hamstring fatigue index values at 300 ^o /s were associated with the presence of previous knee injury (area under the curve [AUC] = 73%, p  = 0.004), and shoulder external rotators fatigue index values at 360°/s were not associated with the presence of previous shoulder injury (AUC = 68%, p  = 0.053).

Conclusions  Elite volleyball athletes who reported previous knee injuries were prone to a higher fatigue index than those reporting no injuries. Knee flexor resistance training might be useful for those athletes who reported knee injuries in the previous season.

Less impact absorption at the ankle joint is related to the single-leg landing stability deficit in patients with chronic ankle instability

Single-leg landing (SLL) stability deficits are common dysfunctions after lateral ankle sprain (LAS), and are associated with reinjury and needs to be addressed. SLL stability deficits could be associated with impact absorption ability. Thus, we evaluated these relationships. We recruited 46 patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and 64 control patients and measured their kinematics, SLL stability, and impact absorption ability. The SLL stability was evaluated by calculating the anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) and medial-lateral stability index (MLSI). The impact absorption ability was evaluated by calculating the energy absorption (EA). The large negative value of the EA indicated the absorption of a large amount of energy. The Japanese version of identification of functional ankle instability (IdFAI-J) score (P < 0.001), MLSI value (P = 0.004), and sagittal plane ankle EA value (less EA at ankle joint) (P < 0.001) were significantly high in CAI, and sagittal plane knee EA value (more EA at knee joint) (P < 0.041) was significantly low in CAI than in the control group. Multiple regression analysis showed that the APSI was associated with sagittal plane ankle EA (β = 0.275, P = 0.004). The MLSI was associated with sagittal plane ankle EA (β = 0.204, P = 0.034) and the idFAI score (β = 0.234, P = 0.015). The SLL stability impairment after LAS was related to decreased impact absorption ability at the ankle joint.

Progression of Fatigue Modifies Primary Contributors to Ground Reaction Forces During Drop Landing

Few studies have focused on the effect of fatigue severity on landing strategy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of fatigue progression on ground reaction force during landing. Eighteen participants performed a fatigue exercise protocol. Then participants performed drop landings at three levels of fatigue: no fatigue, medium fatigue, and severe fatigue. Multiple linear regression was conducted to identify the predictors of the peak vertical ground reaction force at each level of fatigue. Two-way ANOVAs were conducted to test the effect of fatigue on the vertical ground reaction force and the predictors. For the vertical ground reaction force, the knee joint stiffness and the knee angle at initial contact were the main predictors at no fatigue. The peak knee flexion angle and knee power were the main predictors at medium fatigue. However, the peak ankle plantarflexion moments became the main predictor at severe fatigue. The vertical ground reaction force decreased from no to medium fatigue (p = 0.001), and then increased from medium to severe fatigue (p = 0.034). The knee joint stiffness decreased from no to medium fatigue (p = 0.049), and then remained unchanged from medium to severe fatigue. The peak knee flexion angle increased from no to medium fatigue (p = 0.001), and then slightly decreased from medium to severe fatigue (p = 0.051). The results indicate that fatigue progression causes a transition from stiff to soft landing, and then to stiff landing. Participants used ankle joints more to control the landing intensity at severe fatigue.

The Acute Influence of Running-Induced Fatigue on the Performance and Biomechanics of a Countermovement Jump

Lower limb kinematics and kinetics during the landing phase of jumping might change because of localized muscle fatigue. This study aimed to investigate the acute influence of running-induced fatigue on the performance and lower limb kinematics and kinetics of a countermovement jump. A running-induced fatigue protocol was applied to fifteen male subjects. Participants were asked to perform three successful countermovement jumps before and after fatigue. Kinematic and kinetic data were collected to compare any fatigue influences. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and paired-sample t-tests were used to analyze the data. Running-induced fatigue did not significantly change vertical jump height and peak vertical ground reaction forces (GRF) during the push-off and landing phases. Lower limb biomechanics significantly changed, especially kinematic parameters. During the push-off phase, fatigue resulted in an increased ankle peak inversion angle, knee minimal flexion angle, knee peak abduction angle, and hip peak flexion moment. In addition, the range of motion (ROM) of the ankle and knee joints in the frontal plane was also increased. Certain parameters decreased as a result of fatigue, such as the ankle peak internal rotation angle, hip peak abduction angle, the ROM of the ankle joint in the sagittal plane, and ROM of the hip joint in the frontal plane. During the landing phase, the peak inversion angle and peak external rotation angle of the ankle joint, peak abduction angle of the knee and hip joint, ROM of the ankle joint in the horizontal plane, ROM of the ankle and knee joint in the frontal plane were all increased as a result of fatigue. The knee peak flexion moment and hip peak extension moment, however, were decreased. Under fatigue conditions, lower limb kinetics and kinematics were changed during both the push-off and landing phases. More attention should be focused on the landing phase and the last period of the push-off phase due to potentially higher risks of injury. The findings of the current study may be beneficial to athletes and coaches in preventing jumping related injuries.
