Predicting firm creation in rural Texas: A multi-model machine learning approach to a complex policy problem

Rural and urban America have becoming increasingly divided, both politically and economically. Entrepreneurship can help rural communities catch back up by jumpstarting economic growth, creating jobs, and building resilience to economic shocks. However, less is known about firm creation in rural areas compared to urban areas. To that end, in this paper we ask: What factors predict firm creation in rural America? Our analysis, based on a comparative framework involving multiple machine learning modeling techniques, helps addresses three gaps in academic literature on rural firm creation. First, entrepreneurship research stretches across disciplines, often using econometric methods to identify the effect of a specific variable, rather than comparing the predictive importance of multiple variables. Second, research on firm creation centers on high-tech, urban firms. Third, modern machine learning techniques have not yet been applied in an integrated way to address rural entrepreneurship, a complex economic and policy problem that defies simple, monocausal claims. In this paper, we apply four machine learning methods (subset selection, lasso, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting) to a novel dataset to examine what social and economic factors are predictive of firm growth in rural Texas counties from 2008-2018. Our results suggest that some factors commonly discussed as promoting entrepreneurship (e.g., access to broadband and patents) may not be as predictive as socioeconomic ones (age distribution, ethnic diversity, social capital, and immigration). We also find that the strength of specific industries (oil, wind, healthcare, and elder/childcare) predicts firm growth, as does the number of local banks. Most factors predictive of firm growth in rural counties are distinct from those in urban counties, supporting the argument that rural entrepreneurship is a distinct phenomenon worthy of distinct focus. More broadly, this multi-model approach can offer initial, focusing guidance to policymakers seeking to address similarly complex policy problems.

Feasibility and Assessment of a Machine Learning-Based Predictive Model of Outcome After Lumbar Decompression Surgery

Retrospective study at a unique center.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study is twofold, to develop a virtual patients model for lumbar decompression surgery and to evaluate the precision of an artificial neural network (ANN) model designed to accurately predict the clinical outcomes of lumbar decompression surgery.

METHODS

We performed a retrospective study of complete Electronic Health Records (EHR) to identify potential unfavorable criteria for spine surgery (predictors). A cohort of synthetics EHR was created to classify patients by surgical success (green zone) or partial failure (orange zone) using an Artificial Neural Network which screens all the available predictors.

RESULTS

In the actual cohort, we included 60 patients, with complete EHR allowing efficient analysis, 26 patients were in the orange zone (43.4%) and 34 were in the green zone (56.6%). The average positive criteria amount for actual patients was 8.62 for the green zone (SD+/- 3.09) and 10.92 for the orange zone (SD 3.38). The classifier (a neural network) was trained using 10,000 virtual patients and 2000 virtual patients were used for test purposes. The 12,000 virtual patients were generated from the 60 EHR, of which half were in the green zone and half in the orange zone. The model showed an accuracy of 72% and a ROC score of 0.78. The sensitivity was 0.885 and the specificity 0.59.

CONCLUSION

Our method can be used to predict a favorable patient to have lumbar decompression surgery. However, there is still a need to further develop its ability to analyze patients in the "failure of treatment" zone to offer precise management of patient health before spinal surgery.

Medicolite-Machine Learning-Based Patient Care Model

This paper discusses the machine learning effect on healthcare and the development of an application named "Medicolite" in which various modules have been developed for convenience with health-related problems like issues with diet. It also provides online doctor appointments from home and medication through the phone. A healthcare system is "Smart" when it can decide on its own and can prescribe patients life-saving drugs. Machine learning helps in capturing data that are large and contain sensitive information about the patients, so data security is one of the important aspects of this system. It is a health system that uses trending technologies and mobile internet to connect people and healthcare institutions to make them aware of their health condition by intelligently responding to their questions. It perceives information through machine learning and processes this information using cloud computing. With the new technologies, the system decreases the manual intervention in healthcare. Every single piece of information has been saved in the system and the user can access it any time. Furthermore, users can take appointments at any time without standing in a queue. In this paper, the authors proposed a CNN-based classifier. This CNN-based classifier is faster than SVM-based classifier. When these two classifiers are compared based on training and testing sessions, it has been found that the CNN has taken less time (30 seconds) compared to SVM (58 seconds).

Diagnosis of vertebral column pathologies using concatenated resampling with machine learning algorithms

Medical diagnosis through the classification of biomedical attributes is one of the exponentially growing fields in bioinformatics. Although a large number of approaches have been presented in the past, wide use and superior performance of the machine learning (ML) methods in medical diagnosis necessitates significant consideration for automatic diagnostic methods. This study proposes a novel approach called concatenated resampling (CR) to increase the efficacy of traditional ML algorithms. The performance is analyzed leveraging four ML approaches like tree-based ensemble approaches, and linear machine learning approach for automatic diagnosis of inter-vertebral pathologies with increased. Besides, undersampling, over-sampling, and proposed CR techniques have been applied to unbalanced training dataset to analyze the impact of these techniques on the accuracy of each of the classification model. Extensive experiments have been conducted to make comparisons among different classification models using several metrics including accuracy, precision, recall, and F ₁ score. Comparative analysis has been performed on the experimental results to identify the best performing classifier along with the application of the re-sampling technique. The results show that the extra tree classifier achieves an accuracy of 0.99 in association with the proposed CR technique.
