MLMSeg: A multi-view learning model for ultrasound thyroid nodule segmentation

Accurate segmentation of the thyroid gland in ultrasound images is an essential initial step in distinguishing between benign and malignant nodules, thus facilitating early diagnosis. Most existing deep learning-based methods to segment thyroid nodules are learned from only a single view or two views, which limits the performance of segmenting nodules at different scales in complex ultrasound scanning environments. To address this limitation, this study proposes a multi-view learning model, abbreviated as MLMSeg. First, a deep convolutional neural network is introduced to encode the features of the local view. Second, a multi-channel transformer module is designed to capture long-range dependency correlations of global view between different nodules. Third, there are semantic relationships of structural view between features of different layers. For example, low-level features and high-level features are endowed with hidden relationships in the feature space. To this end, a cross-layer graph convolutional module is proposed to adaptively learn the correlations of high-level and low-level features by constructing graphs across different layers. In addition, in the view fusion, a channel-aware graph attention block is devised to fuse the features from the aforementioned views for accurate segmentation of thyroid nodules. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, extensive comparative experiments were conducted with 14 baseline methods. MLMSeg achieved higher Dice coefficients (92.10% and 83.84%) and Intersection over Union scores (86.60% and 73.52%) on two different thyroid datasets. The exceptional segmentation capability of MLMSeg for thyroid nodules can greatly assist in localizing thyroid nodules and facilitating more precise measurements of their transverse and longitudinal diameters, which is of significant clinical relevance for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules.

Dual graph convolutional networks integrating affective knowledge and position information for aspect sentiment triplet extraction

Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction (ASTE) is a challenging task in natural language processing (NLP) that aims to extract triplets from comments. Each triplet comprises an aspect term, an opinion term, and the sentiment polarity of the aspect term. The neural network model developed for this task can enable robots to effectively identify and extract the most meaningful and relevant information from comment sentences, ultimately leading to better products and services for consumers. Most existing end-to-end models focus solely on learning the interactions between the three elements in a triplet and contextual words, ignoring the rich affective knowledge information contained in each word and paying insufficient attention to the relationships between multiple triplets in the same sentence. To address this gap, this study proposes a novel end-to-end model called the Dual Graph Convolutional Networks Integrating Affective Knowledge and Position Information (DGCNAP). This model jointly considers both the contextual features and the affective knowledge information by introducing the affective knowledge from SenticNet into the dependency graph construction of two parallel channels. In addition, a novel multi-target position-aware function is added to the graph convolutional network (GCN) to reduce the impact of noise information and capture the relationships between potential triplets in the same sentence by assigning greater positional weights to words that are in proximity to aspect or opinion terms. The experiment results on the ASTE-Data-V2 datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms other state-of-the-art models significantly, where the F1 scores on 14res, 14lap, 15res, and 16res are 70.72, 57.57, 61.19, and 69.58.

The Case of Aspect in Sentiment Analysis: Seeking Attention or Co-Dependency?

(1) Background: Aspect-based sentiment analysis (SA) is a natural language processing task, the aim of which is to classify the sentiment associated with a specific aspect of a written text. The performance of SA methods applied to texts related to health and well-being lags behind that of other domains. (2) Methods: In this study, we present an approach to aspect-based SA of drug reviews. Specifically, we analysed signs and symptoms, which were extracted automatically using the Unified Medical Language System. This information was then passed onto the BERT language model, which was extended by two layers to fine-tune the model for aspect-based SA. The interpretability of the model was analysed using an axiomatic attribution method. We performed a correlation analysis between the attribution scores and syntactic dependencies. (3) Results: Our fine-tuned model achieved accuracy of approximately 95% on a well-balanced test set. It outperformed our previous approach, which used syntactic information to guide the operation of a neural network and achieved an accuracy of approximately 82%. (4) Conclusions: We demonstrated that a BERT-based model of SA overcomes the negative bias associated with health-related aspects and closes the performance gap against the state-of-the-art in other domains.
