Core self-evaluations mediate the association between leaders' facial appearance and their professional success: Adults' and children's perceptions

Do looks matter in supply chain contracting? An experimental study

We present results of an experiment designed to reveal the "face effect" on pricing behavior in a supply chain game. In particular, we study the variation in wholesale prices driven by subjective judgments of three facial traits-attractiveness, trustworthiness, and dominance-of a retailer's face and own appearance. Our experimental data suggest that the distributions of decisions in settings whether individuals see, or not see, retailers' faces are not equivalent. Furthermore, we find the complex dependencies between decision behaviors and facial traits. Subjective evaluations of facial traits, both self-reported and others, have a significant effect on the selected decisions.

Shared Leadership and Team Performance: The Joint Effect of Team Dispositional Composition and Collective Identification

This study explores how team core self-evaluations (CSE) influence the emergence and effectiveness of shared leadership. Drawing on adaptive leadership theory, we propose that decisions to share leadership responsibilities rather than allocating the role to a single team member are influenced by homogeneity in members’ CSE. In addition, we identify team collective identification as an emergent team state that interacts with CSE homogeneity to promote the emergence of shared leadership. We then argue that not all shared leadership teams are equally effective; applying group social capital theory, we propose that team mean CSE strengthens the impact of shared leadership on team performance. Results based on multisource and time-lagged data from 85 project teams provide support for our proposed moderated mediation model. We discuss how our theoretical model extends research on the role of team dispositional composition on the antecedents and consequents of shared leadership and highlight practical implications related to the design, recruitment, and socialization of autonomous work teams.

Daily Quality-of-life Impact of Scars: An Interview-based Foundational Study of Patient-reported Themes

Background:

Scars negatively impact mental health. Prior patient interview studies on cutaneous scars have elicited opinions pertaining to psychosocial effects, appearance, and symptoms. There remains a need for patient-reported opinions in broader contexts, including career and sexual well-being, to better understand patients’ experiences with their cutaneous scars.

Methods:

In this qualitative study, patients with cutaneous scars participated in semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were analyzed using a constant comparative approach using the data software QDAMiner, to generate a thematic framework encompassing patients’ experience with cutaneous scars.

Results:

In total, 37 patients aged 25–79 years (mean 45, SD 17.9) were interviewed. Patients presented with keloid (2/37, 5%), hypertrophic (5/37, 14%), atrophic (4/37, 11%), and linear surgical (18/37, 49%) scars. Opinions fell under 8 overarching themes. Patients spoke commonly about psychological and social well-being (references to the frequency of thinking about a scar and talking about scars with others were mentioned 56 times by 26 patients and 103 times by 29 patients, respectively, for example). Discussions of sexual well-being and career were elicited but rarer (references to feeling uncomfortable when naked and negative impacts on professional networking were mentioned 17 times by 7 patients and 5 times by 3 patients, respectively, for example).

Conclusions:

The relationship between determinants of patients’ opinions of their scars and their impact on quality-of-life is complex. These results expand upon the existing knowledge of the effects scars have on quality-of-life and can contribute to the development and validation of future scar outcome measures.

Light as a positive situational cue at work: Satisfaction with light relates to judgements of other's warmth and competence

Workplace illumination is known to impact mood, performance and decision-making. Based on the idea that positive feelings associated with light might influence social judgements in workplaces, we propose that satisfaction with light as a specific affective response to light would lead to positive judgements of other individuals. In a laboratory experiment (N = 164), participants assessed their satisfaction with light and rated other person's faces on warmth and competence. Results showed that satisfaction with light positively influenced judgement of others. We replicated the positive relation between satisfaction with light and social judgements in a field study with employees (N = 176). These findings highlight the importance of satisfaction with light for social judgement in workplaces. We discuss theoretical contributions and practical implications concerning the design of settings involving the evaluation of other individuals. Practitioner Summary: The design of work settings where the evaluation of others takes place is an important topic. A laboratory experiment and a field study demonstrate that satisfaction with workplace illumination influences judgements of others. The results provide interesting possibilities for the design of work settings that involve the evaluation of others.
