2-dimensional cognitive test anxieties and their relationships with achievement goals, cognitive resources, motivational engagement, and academic performance

Actions speak louder than words: modifications of the applied academic books and their reflections on students' academic success, academic enjoyment, and academic resilience

Innovation is the process of renewing and updating a domain, a product, or a service by introducing new methods, introducing new techniques, or generating effective concepts to produce new value. Considering universal as well as local books, a teacher may find some sections that need modifications and supportive sections. These changes may have an impact on language learners' emotional and/or cognitive development. The purpose of this research was to shed light on the use of creative activities and their consequences on academic enjoyment, academic resilience, and academic performance. To that purpose, two groups of EFL (English as a foreign language) learners from Saudi Arabia (public schools) participated in this research and were requested to take pre-and post-tests to assess their level of academic engagement, academic resilience, and academic performance in language skills. According to the data analysis via the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), the experimental group outperformed their counterparts in the control group in terms of academic enjoyment, resilience, and academic performance due to considered modifications in the applied academic books. The study's pedagogical ramifications are highlighted in the conclusion.

Academic resilience and test anxiety: The moderating role of achievement goals

The present study examined the associations of academic resilience and achievement goals with test anxiety, and the moderating role of achievement goals in the relation between academic resilience and test anxiety among 1632 secondary one students from eight secondary schools in Singapore. Results showed that students who reported lower levels of academic resilience also reported higher levels of cognitive test anxiety, and those who reported higher levels of avoidance-goal endorsement reported higher levels of cognitive test anxiety. Importantly, the relationship between academic resilience and test anxiety was moderated by avoidance-based goals endorsement level. Specifically, this relationship was stronger for those who endorsed higher levels of avoidance-based goals. Approach-based achievement goals did not significantly interact with academic resilience to influence test anxiety. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Academic enjoyment, behavioral engagement, self-concept, organizational strategy and achievement in EFL setting: A multiple mediation analysis

Motivated by the positive psychology movement in the English as Foreign Language (EFL), existing studies have demonstrated that subject-related enjoyment has a positive correlation with academic achievement. However, quite a few studieshave examined why academic enjoyment can predict positive academic achievement. This study aimed to investigate whether behavioral engagement, self-concept, and organizational strategy mediated relations between academic enjoyment and achievement in EFL setting. 528 Chinese secondary school students (Male: N = 280; Female: N = 248) participated in the survey and completed the questionnaires on EFL-related enjoyment, behavioral engagement, self-concept, organizational strategy, and academic performance. Structural equation model (SEM) analyses showed that students’ academic enjoyment positively predicted their English achievement. Academic engagement, self-concept, and organizational strategy had parallel multiple mediating effects between academic enjoyment and English achievement. Multi-group SEM analysis demonstrated that the model had invariance across genders, indicating that the model is applicable to both male and female students. Limitations and implications are discussed.

Reading with induced worry: The role of physiological self-regulation and working memory updating in text comprehension

BACKGROUND

An interplay of emotional and cognitive aspects underlies academic performance. We focused on the contribution of such interplay to text comprehension.

AIMS

We investigated the effect of worry on comprehension and the role of two potential moderators of this effect: physiological self-regulation as resting heart rate variability (HRV) and working memory updating.

SAMPLE

Eighty-two seventh graders were involved in a quasi-experimental design.

METHODS

Students read an informational text in one of two reading conditions: to read for themselves to know more (n = 46; low-worry condition) or to gain the highest score in a ranking (n = 36; high-worry condition). Students' resting HRV was recorded while watching a video of a natural scenario. The executive function of working memory updating was also assessed. After reading, students completed a comprehension task.

RESULTS

Findings revealed the moderating role of HRV in the relationship between induced worry and text comprehension. In the high-worry condition, students with higher resting HRV performed better than students who read under the same instructions but had lower HRV. In contrast, in the low-worry condition, students with higher resting HRV showed a lower performance as compared to students with lower HRV. Finally, working memory updating was positively related to text comprehension.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate that the cognitive component of anxiety, that is, worry, plays a role in performing a fundamental learning activity like text comprehension. The importance of physiological self-regulation emerges clearly. In a condition of high worry, higher ability to regulate emotions and thoughts acts as a protective factor.

The Impact of EFL Students' Emotioncy Level on Their Motivation and Academic Achievement: A Theoretical Conceptual Analysis

Recently, teachers' and language learners' emotional status has received special attention among researchers. They argued that learners' emotioncy level might affect every aspect of language teaching process; therefore, the present study reviewed the impact of EFL students' emotioncy level on their motivation and academic achievement. Reviewing the literature revealed that there are different classifications for learners' emotioncy level. However, studies showed that the most prominent classification of learners' feeling is positive or negative. No matter positive or negative, the main responsibility of teachers in these situations is finding an appropriate way to control these feeling. The paper concludes with some pedagogical implications to control emotioncy in the classroom.
