Abstract
'Docteur Jules Guyot' pears were immersed in acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) and 0.01 mol L-1 ethyl glycol tetra acetic acid (EGTA) to investigate the changes of Ca2+ receptor proteins and phenylpropanoid pathway. Results showed that ASM treatment increased the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), 4-coumarate coenzyme A ligase (4CL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) in the exocarp of pears, whereas EGTA pre-treatment inhibited the activities of these enzymes. ASM treatment also enhanced the transcription of PcPAL, PcC4H, Pc4CL, PcC3H, PcCOMT, PcCCoAOMT, PcCCR, PcPOD, PcCDPK1, PcCDPK2, PcCDPK5, PcCDPK11, PcCDPK13, PcCBL1, PcCBL9, PcCIPK14, and PcCML27 in pears. EGTA + ASM treatments inhibited the transcription of PcPAL, PcC4H, Pc4CL, PcC3H, PcCCR, PcF5H, PcCAD, PcCDPK11, PcCDPK26, PcCDPK32, PcCBL1, PcCIPK14, PcCIPK23, and PcCaM in the fruit. All these results indicated that ASM induced the gene expressions of Ca2+ receptor proteins, the key enzyme activities and gene expressions in phenylpropanoid pathway; Ca2+ mediated phenylpropane metabolism in pears after ASM treatment.

Abstract
At postharvest, fruits have a short shelf life. Recently, there has been much literature on the effects of melatonin on the postharvest quality of horticultural crops. However, reports of various findings comprise mixed claims and product-specific conclusions. Therefore, a meta-analysis systematically dissects the comprehensive effect on several fruits. In this meta-analysis, standard mean difference (SMD) was adopted using a random-effect model. The study used 36 articles and isolated 24 indicator parameters of postharvest quality and antioxidant properties based on the inclusion criteria. As exhibited in the forest plot, melatonin reduced chilling injury, weight loss, respiration rate, and ethylene content (SMD -0.90, 95% CI [-1.14, -0.65]; I2 = 81%; p < .00001). Similarly, the application of melatonin significantly suppressed electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, lipoxygenase, and polyphenol oxidase (SMD -0.89, 95% CI [-1.09, -0.69]; I2 = 70%; p < .00001). In addition, exogenous melatonin application induced endogenous melatonin content, phenolic content, and flavonoid and anthocyanin contents (SMD 1.15, 95% CI [0.91, 1.39]; I2 = 71%; p = .01). Moreover, melatonin treatment enhanced antioxidant activities (catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyse) (SMD 1.37, 95% CI [1.03, 1.71]; I2 = 86%; p < .00001). Thus, in the whole study, the overall effect was significantly high in treated fruit (p < .0001), and the overall heterogeneity was above (I2 ) > 70%. In addition, the funnel plot showed symmetry in the most selected studies. To sum up, the result gives a further understanding of melatonin's capabilities in reducing postharvest losses and maintaining the quality of fresh fruits.

Abstract
Flavour of ripe Alphonso mango is invariably dominated by the de novo appearance of lactones and furanones during ripening. Of these, furanones comprising furaneol (4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone) and mesifuran (2,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-3(2H)-furanone) are of particular importance due to their sweet, fruity caramel-like flavour characters and low odour detection thresholds. We isolated a 1056 bp complete open reading frame of a cDNA encoding S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent O-methyltransferase from Alphonso mango. The recombinantly expressed enzyme, MiOMTS showed substrate specificity towards furaneol and protocatechuic aldehyde synthesizing mesifuran and vanillin, respectively, in an in vitro assay reaction. A semi-quantitative PCR analysis showed fruit-specific expression of MiOMTS transcripts. Quantitative real-time PCR displayed ripening-related expression pattern of MiOMTS in both pulp and skin of Alphonso mango. Also, early and significantly enhanced accumulation of its transcripts was detected in pulp and skin of ethylene-treated fruits. Ripening-related and fruit-specific expression profile of MiOMTS and substrate specificity towards furaneol is a suggestive of its involvement in the synthesis of mesifuran in Alphonso mango. Moreover, a significant trigger in the expression of MiOMTS transcripts in ethylene-treated fruits point towards the transcriptional regulation of mesifuran biosynthesis by ethylene.
