Abstract
Due to their extensive use and the globalized commerce of agricultural goods, pesticides have become a global concern. Despite the undoubtful advantages of their use in agricultural practices, their misuse is a threat to the environment and human health. Their analysis in environmental samples and in food products continues to gain interest in the analytical chemistry community as they are challenging matrices, and legal concentration limits are particularly low (in the order of ppb). In particular, the use of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has gained special attention in this field thanks to its potential to minimize the matrix effect, while enriching its concentration, allowing very low limits of detection, and without the need of a large amount of solvents or lengthy procedures. Moreover, its combination with gas chromatography (GC) can be easily automated, making it a very interesting approach for routine analysis. In this review, advances and analytical strategies for the use of SPME coupled with GC are discussed and compared for the analysis of pesticides in food and environmental samples, hopefully encouraging its further development and routine application in this field.

Abstract
High-temperature comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (HTGC × GC) using a longitudinally modulated cryogenic system (LMCS) was developed for the analysis of low-volatility pesticides in cabbage. The method applied DB-17HT and DB-5HT as the first and second dimensional (1D and 2D) columns, respectively. Twelve pesticides, namely 6 organochlorines (4,4'-DDT, β-endosulfan, endosulfan sulfate, endrin, heptachlor, and dicofol), 4 carbamates (metolcarb, isoprocarb, methiocarb, and carbofuran), 1 organophosphate (chlorpyrifos), and 1 pyrethroid (permethrin), were spiked into cabbage samples and prepared using QuEChERS. The applied oven temperature was up to 340 °C, enabling the elution of all the target pesticides and the matrix. The effects of initial oven temperature program, temperature ramp rate, LMCS trap temperature, and modulation period (PM) on the separation results were investigated, leading to the suitable conditions of 80 °C, 15 °C min-1, 10 °C, and 12 s, respectively. The method detection limits, signal-to-noise ratio, and recoveries of the compounds were within the ranges of 0.01-0.09 mg kg-1, 4.26-32.7, and 78-104%, respectively. Good linearity ranges within the concentration range of 0.1-1 ppm with R2 > 0.9134 were also obtained with the intra and interday precisions of the peak areas of 0.4-9.8% and 1.0-10.2%, respectively.

Abstract
A microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µ-PAD) is a promising new technology platform for the development of extremely low-cost sensing devices. However, it has low sensitivity that might not enable to measure maximum allowable concentration of various pollutants in the environment. In this study, a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was developed as a preconcentration method to enhance the sensitivity of the µ-PAD for trace analysis of selected pesticides. Four critical parameters (volume of n-hexane and acetone, extraction time, NaCl amount) that affect the efficiency of DLLME have been optimized using response surface methodology. An acceptable mean recovery of 79-97% and 83-93% was observed at 1 µg L-1 and 5 µg L-1 fortification level, respectively, with very good repeatability (2.2-6.01% RSD) and reproducibility (5.60-10.41% RSD). Very high enrichment factors ranging from 317 to 1471 were obtained. The limits of detection for the studied analytes were in the range of 0.18-0.41 µg L-1 which is much lower than the WHO limits of 5-50 µg L-1 for similar category of analytes. Therefore, by coupling DLLME with µ-PAD, a sensitivity that allows to detect environmental threat and also that surpassed most of the previous reports have been achieved in this study. This implies that the preconcentration step has a paramount contribution to address the sensitivity problem associated with µ-PAD.

Abstract
The aroma fingerprints and discrimination analysis of shiitake mushrooms under different drying conditions were performed by GC-IMS, GC-MS, and descriptive sensory analysis (DSA) with advanced chemometric methods. Three samples (A, B, and C) were treated with varied drying degree and rate. The sample A and C were at the same drying degree and the sample B and C were at the same drying rate. The GC-IMS volatile fingerprints, including the three-dimensional topographic map, topographic map, and gallery plot, showed that 29 compounds showed higher signal intensities in sample B. Moreover, 28 volatile compounds were identified by HS-SPME-GC-MS and only 8 compounds were ever detected by GC-IMS. The sample B not only had more varieties of volatile compounds, but also showed significant higher contents than sample A and C, especially C8 compounds (p < 0.05). Additionally, sample B showed the highest intensity in mushroom-like, chocolate-like, caramel, sweat, seasoning-like, and cooked potato-like odors by DSA. PCA, fingerprint similarity analysis (FSA) and PLSR further demonstrated that the sample B was different from sample A and C. These results revealed that samples with different drying degree were different and drying degree exerted more influence on the volatile flavor quality than the drying rate. This study will provide a foundation and establish a set of comprehensive and objective methods for further flavor analysis.

Abstract
Extensive use of organophosphorus pesticides in agriculture leads to adverse effects to the environment and human health. Sample preparation is compulsory to enrich target analytes prior to detection as they often exist at trace levels and this step is critical as it determines the concentration of pollutants present in samples. The selection of a suitable extraction method is of great importance. The analytical performance of the extraction methods is influenced by the selection of sorbents as sorbents play a vital role in the sensitivity and selectivity of an analytical method. To date, numerous sorbent materials have been developed to cater to the needs of selective and sensitive pesticides' detection. Comprehensive details pertaining to extraction methods, developed sorbents, and analytical performance are provided. This review intended to provide a general overview on different extraction techniques and sorbents that have been developed in the last 10 years for organophosphorus pesticides' determinations in food and water samples.

Abstract
A combined untargeted and targeted approach was established for fingerprinting volatile organic compounds in winter jujubes from eight regions of China. Volatiles, including alcohols, aldehydes, acids, esters, and alkenes, were identified by gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). Benzyl alcohol, octanoic acid, 2-hexenal, linalool, 2-nonenal, and ethyl decanoate were the most common compounds present in all jujubes. Principal component analysis (PCA) from GC-IMS and untargeted E-nose showed that the main volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of most jujubes were similar. The volatile organic compounds of winter jujubes from Yuncheng city, Shanxi province, and Aksu region, Xinjiang province, were significantly different from those from other regions. 1-Penten-3-ol, ethyl hexanoate, methyl laurate, and 2-formyltoluene were the markers of XJAKS with green and fruity aroma, and SXYC could be labeled by acetone and 2-methoxyphenol with woody and pungent aroma. GC-IMS was an effective method for volatile fingerprinting of jujubes with high sensitivity and accuracy.

Abstract
A modified electrode was developed with Co-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles stabilized in poly(vinylpyrrolidone) for butralin monitoring. This is the first non-mercury electrode proposed for the quantification of butralin. The bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, which showed that they are composed of a cobalt core partially covered with silver. The modified electrode was characterized by field emission gun scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The experimental parameters (pH, supporting electrolyte, accumulation step, pulse technique) were optimized. The calibration plot for butralin obtained by square wave voltammetry was linear in the range of 0.1-1.0 μmol L-1 with limits of detection and quantification of 32 and 106 nmol L-1, respectively. Lastly, the modified electrode was effectively implemented in the quantification of butralin in honey and apple jam samples. The results were in agreement with those furnished by UV-vis spectrometry and endorsed by statistical tests.

Abstract
The pickled products of finger citron are famous in southern China for their unique taste and flavor. Although pickling process involves complex treatments including salting, desalting, sugaring, cooking and drying, extended shelf-life up to ten years after pickling can be achieved. In this study, the variations of volatile flavour components in the pickling process of finger citron were investigated by electronic nose (E-nose), headspace solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS). HS-SPME-GC-MS identified 85 substances, and HS-GC-IMS identified 81 substances, including terpenoids (21), aromatic hydrocarbons (11), alcohols (11), aldehydes (10), esters (7), phenols (6), acids (5), ethers (2), ketones (2), and other species (10). Linalool, limonene, (E)-3,7-dimethyl-1,3,6-octatriene, myrcene, 3-carene, β-pinene, α-pinene, terpinolene, 1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-1,4-cyclohexadiene, α-terpinene, (S)-β-bisabolene, 1-isopropyl-2-methylbenzene and 1-methyl-4-(1-methylethenyl)-benzene were the stable substances at relatively high contents in finger citron at different pickling process. Salting and drying steps in the pickling process exerted greatest influence on the volatile components of finger citron. Salting promoted the generation of aldehydes, esters and acids, but led to the disappearance of alcohols, while drying promoted the generation of alcohols, phenols, aldehydes and acids at the expense of reduction in terpenoids. Our study revealed that the characteristic volatile compounds of finger citron pickled products was mainly formed by the biological reactions in the salting stage and thermal chemical transformations in the drying stage. This study also validated the suitability of E-nose combined with HS-SPME-GC-MS and HS-GC-IMS in tracking the changes of volatile components in finger citron during the pickling process.

Abstract
This work presents a new optical microfluidic paper biosensor for the detection of organophosphate pesticides and carbamate pesticides. The assay strip is composed of a paper support (1 × 17.6 mm) onto which acetylcholine esterase (AChE) and acetylcholine chloride (AChCl) are deposited, in such a way that there is a small hole between them that ensures that they only come into contact in the reaction zone when they are carried by a solution of the sample by lateral flow to the reaction zone containing bromocresol purple (BCP) as the pH indicator, immobilized by sol-gel. The sensor operates at room temperature and the rate of the inhibited reaction serves as an analytical signal, which is measured using a camera by quantifying the appropriate colour coordinate. Calibration curves were obtained for chlorpyrifos and carbaryl, with a useful concentration range from 0.24 to 20 μg L-1 for carbaryl and from 2.00 to 45 μg L-1 for chlorpyrifos. The detection limits were 0.24 and 2.00 μg L-1, respectively, and with reproducibility around 4.2-5.5%. The method was applied to the determination of pesticides in different water samples, with no sample preparation.

Abstract
A simple, sensitive and effective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technique was developed for the extraction of pyrethroid pesticides from environmental water samples, followed by gas chromatography tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry determination. An adsorbent of magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@deep eutectic solvent (M-ZIF-8@DES) was prepared using deep eutectic solvent coated on the surface of M-ZIF-8. The features of M-ZIF-8@DES were confirmed by material characterizations, and the results indicated that M-ZIF-8@DES has a good magnetism (61.3 emu g-1), a decent surface area (96.83 m2 g-1) and pore volume (0.292 mL g-1). Single factor experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of different conditions on the performance of MSPE. Under the optimal conditions, the developed method performs good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9916) in the concentration range of 1-500 μg L-1. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.05-0.21 μg L-1 (signal/noise = 3/1). The intraday relative standard deviation (RSD) and interday RSD were less than 9.40%. Finally, the proposed technique was applied for the determination of pyrethroid pesticides in environmental water samples. This work shows the potential of DES-modified metal-organic frameworks for different sample pretreatment techniques.
