Abstract
`The objective of current research was to encapsulate citrus bergamia essential oil (CBEO) in nanocomplexes composed of sodium caseinate (SC) and peach gum polysaccharide (PG) in various ratios (SC/PG-1:0, 0:1, 1:1, 1:3, and 3:1). The nanocomplexes formed by the combination of SC and PG in a ratio of 1:3 exhibited a zeta potential of -21.36 mV and a PDI of 0.25. The CBEO-loaded SC/PG (1:3) nanocomplexes revealed the maximum encapsulation efficiency (82.47 %) and loading capacity (1.85 %). FTIR also confirmed the secondary structure variations in response to different ratios of CBEO-loaded SC/PG nanocomplexes. In addition, the XRD and fluorescence spectroscopy analysis also revealed structural changes among CBEO nanocomplexes. The thermal capability of CBEO-loaded SC/PG (1:3) nanocomplexes via TGA showed the minimum weight loss among other complexes. SEM and CLSM analysis demonstrated the uniform distribution and spherical morphology of CBEO-loaded SC/PG (1:3) nanocomplexes. The antioxidant activity of free CBEO was significantly improved in CBEO-loaded nanocomplexes. Likewise, the inhibitory activity of CBEO-loaded nanocomplexes exhibited significantly higher antibacterial action against S. aureus and E. coli. The aforementioned perspective suggests that SC/PG nanocomplexes have potent potential to serve as highly effective nanocarriers with a broad spectrum of uses in the pharmaceutical and food sectors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Soothing the liver (called Shu Gan Jie Yu in Chinese, SGJY) is a significant therapeutic method for breast cancer in TCM. In this study, 3 liver-soothing herbs, including Cyperus rotundus L., Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis Swingle and Rosa rugosa Thunb. were selected and combined to form a SGJY herbal combinatory. THE AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the inhibiting effect of SGJY on breast cancer in vivo and vitro, and to explore the potential mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS SGJY herbal combination was extracted using water. A breast cancer rat model was developed by chemical DMBA by gavage, then treated with SGJY for 11 weeks. The tumor tissue was preserved for RNA sequencing and analyzed by IPA software. The inhibition effects of SGJY on MCF-7 and T47D breast cancer cells were investigated by SRB assay and cell apoptosis analysis, and the protein expression levels of SNCG, ER-α, p-AKT and p-ERK were measured by western blotting. RESULTS SGJY significantly reduced the tumor weight and volume, and the level of estradiol in serum. The results of IPA analysis reveal SGJY upregulated 7 canonical pathways and downregulated 16 canonical pathways. Estrogen receptor signaling was the key canonical pathway with 9 genes downregulated. The results of upstream regulator analysis reveal beta-estradiol was the central target; the upstream regulator network scheme showed that 86 genes could affect the expression of the beta-estradiol, including SNCG, CCL21 and MB. Additionally, SGJY was verified to significantly alter the expression of SNCG mRNA, CCL21 mRNA and MB mRNA which was consistent with the data of RNA-Seq. The inhibition effects of SGJY exhibited a dose-dependent response. The apoptosis rates of MCF7 and T47D cells were upregulated. The protein expression of SNCG, ER-α, p-AKT and p-ERK were all significantly decreased by SGJY on MCF-7 and T47D cells. CONCLUSION The results demonstrate that SGJY may inhibit the growth of breast cancer. The mechanism might involve downregulating the level of serum estradiol, and suppressing the protein expression in the SNCG/ER-α/AKT-ERK pathway.

Abstract
In this paper, liquid-liquid chromatography was introduced for the first time for the separation of fingered citron (Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis Swingle). The fingered citron cultivated in Jinhua is of significant industrial and medicinal value, with several major coumarin compounds detected in its extract. Therefore, further separation for higher purity was of necessity. A preparative liquid-liquid chromatographic method was developed by combining two elution modes (isocratic and step-gradient) with selection according to different polarities of the target sample. Five coumarin derivatives-5,7-dimethoxycoumarin (52.6 mg, 99.6%), phellopterin (4.9 mg, 97.1%), 5-prenyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin (6.7 mg, 98.7%), 6-hydroxy-7-methoxycoumarin (7.1 mg, 82.2%), and byakangelicol (10.5 mg, 90.1%)-with similar structures and properties were isolated on a large scale from 100 mg of petroleum ether (PE) extract and 100 mg of ethyl acetate (EA) extract in Jinhua fingered citron. The productivity was much improved. The anti-growth activity of the isolated coumarins was evaluated against three cancer cell lines (HeLa, A549, and MCF7) with an MTT assay. The coumarins demonstrated potential anti-tumor activity on the HeLa cell line, with 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin in particular exhibiting the best anti-growth activity (IC50 = 10.57 ± 0.24 μM) by inhibiting proliferation. It inhibited colony formation and reduced the size of the tumor sphere in a concentration-dependent manner. The main mechanism was confirmed as inducing apoptosis. This work was informative for further studies aimed at exploring new natural-product-based antitumor agents.

Abstract
The study aims to analyze the chemical composition of Suaeda aegyptiaca essential oil (PSAE) by GC-MS, produce the nanoemulsified essential oil (NSAE) using ultrasound, and compare the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the PSAE and NSAE in laboratory medium and rainbow trout fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Geranyl-acetone (30.52%) and p-Vinylguaiacol (10.66%), and (e)-β-ionone (7.79%) were the main PSAE chemical compounds. The mean droplet size diameter, polydispersity index, and viscosity of NSAE were 179.67 nm, 0.255, and 0.96 cP, respectively. PSAE and NSAE showed a moderate antiradical potential against DPPH- and ABTS-free radicals (50 < IC50 < 250 μg mL-1). There was no significant difference between antiradical scavenging of PSAE and NSAE (p > .05). E. faecalis and K. pneumonia were the most and lowest sensitive bacteria to PSAE and NSAE, respectively. Examining different treatments on the shelf-life of minced fish showed that Kakol essential oil could improve the shelf-life of fish between 12.5% and 60% (depending on quality index). There was no significant difference between the bioactivity of PSAE and NSAE, which means that the nanoemulsion showed acceptable performance at lower essential oil concentrations.

Abstract
Plant species are a reservoir of natural compounds that can potentially be used to treat different diseases. Citrus medica Linn. belonging to the Rutaceae family, has been used for centuries in medicine for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and antihyperglycemic properties. These activities are ascribable not only to the presence of health-promoting macronutrients and micronutrients, such as carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins, but also to specialized metabolites, such as flavonoids (apigenin, hesperetin, hesperidin, naringin, naringenin, rutin, quercetin, and diosmin), coumarins (citropten, scoparone, and bergapten), terpenes (limonene, γ-terpinene, limonin, and nomilin), and phenolic acids (p-coumaric acid, trans-ferulic acid, and chlorogenic acid). In recent years, particular attention has been focused on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial activity, antidiabetic, anticancer, and neuroprotective activity of C. medica. However, although many studies have reported this species' chemical and biological properties, the literature has never been analyzed via a systematic approach. For this reason, using PubMed and Scopus as databases, we performed a systematic review of C. medica's chemical composition and biological properties to inspire new research approaches and increase its curative application.

Abstract
Carnivorous plants have fascinated researchers and hobbyists for centuries because of their mode of nutrition which is unlike that of other plants. They are able to produce bioactive compounds used to attract, capture and digest prey but also as a defense mechanism against microorganisms and free radicals. The main purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the secondary metabolites with significant biological activity found in the Sarraceniaceae family. The review also underlines the necessity of future studies for the biochemical characterization of the less investigated species. Darlingtonia, Heliamphora and Sarracenia plants are rich in compounds with potential pharmaceutical and medical uses. These belong to several classes such as flavonoids, with flavonol glycosides being the most abundant, monoterpenes, triterpenes, sesquiterpenes, fatty acids, alkaloids and others. Some of them are well characterized in terms of chemical properties and biological activity and have widespread commercial applications. The review also discusses biological activity of whole extracts and commercially available products derived from Sarraceniaceae plants. In conclusion, this review underscores that Sarraceniaceae species contain numerous substances with the potential to advance health. Future perspectives should focus on the discovery of new molecules and increasing the production of known compounds using biotechnological methods.

Abstract
Influenza viruses are transmitted from human to human via airborne droplets and can be transferred through contaminated environmental surfaces. Some works have demonstrated the efficacy of essential oils (EOs) as antimicrobial and antiviral agents, but most of them examined the liquid phases, which are generally toxic for oral applications. In our study, we describe the antiviral activity of Citrus bergamia, Melaleuca alternifolia, Illicium verum and Eucalyptus globulus vapor EOs against influenza virus type A. In the vapor phase, C. bergamia and M. alternifolia strongly reduced viral cytopathic effect without exerting any cytotoxicity. The E. globulus vapor EO reduced viral infection by 78% with no cytotoxicity, while I. verum was not effective. Furthermore, we characterized the EOs and their vapor phase by the head-space gas chromatography–mass spectrometry technique, observing that the major component found in each liquid EO is the same one of the corresponding vapor phases, with the exception of M. alternifolia. To deepen the mechanism of action, the morphological integrity of virus particles was checked by negative staining transmission electron microscopy, showing that they interfere with the lipid bilayer of the viral envelope, leading to the decomposition of membranes. We speculated that the most abundant components of the vapor EOs might directly interfere with influenza virus envelope structures or mask viral structures important for early steps of viral infection.

Abstract
Microbial foodborne diseases are a major health concern. In this regard, one of the major risk factors is related to consumer preferences for “ready-to-eat” or minimally processed (MP) fruits and vegetables. Essential oil (EO) is a viable alternative used to reduce pathogenic bacteria and increase the shelf-life of MP foods, due to the health risks associated with food chlorine. Indeed, there has been increased interest in using EO in fresh produce. However, more information about EO applications in MP foods is necessary. For instance, although in vitro tests have defined EO as a valuable antimicrobial agent, its practical use in MP foods can be hampered by unrealistic concentrations, as most studies focus on growth reductions instead of bactericidal activity, which, in the case of MP foods, is of utmost importance. The present review focuses on the effects of EO in MP food pathogens, including the more realistic applications. Overall, due to this type of information, EO could be better regarded as an “added value” to the food industry.

Abstract
Photoaging refers to the extrinsic aging resulting from ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, which impacts skin appearance and is accompanied by the risk of skin carcinoma. Developing natural products as photoprotective agents is of great interest in cosmetic industry nowadays. The present study aimed at investigating the possible use of Artemisia sieversiana Ehrhart essential oil (AEO) for the prevention of photoaging induced by UVB. AEO was characterized by chamazulene, which accounted for 38.92% among total 51 identified compounds. In in vitro assays, AEO was found to be a moderate antioxidant and good UVB filter with photostability. A UVB-induced photoaging mice model was established with three AEO formulations (0.1%, 0.5% and 1.5%, w/w) topically applied prior to UVB irradiation. The activities of catalase, particularly superoxide dismutase of skin increased, while malondialdehyde content decreased in AEO groups as compared with model controls. The production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 and MMP-3) and depletion of hydroxyproline in skin were inhibited by AEO in a dose-dependent manner. Histological evaluation indicated that AEO decreased epidermal thickness, inflammatory cell infiltration, collagen degradation and elastin aberrance. These findings indicated that AEO could be a promising sunscreen agent in protecting the skin against photoaging.

Abstract
Human health, food spoilage, and plastic waste, which are three great topical concerns, intersect in the field of food packaging. This has created a trend to replace synthetic food preservatives with natural ones, to produce bio-functional food packaging, and to shift towards biodegradable polymeric materials. Among the natural bioactive agents, essential oils are gaining more and more attention in food packaging applications due to their various benefits and fewer side-effects. However, their volatility, hydrophobicity, and strong odor and taste limit the direct use in food-related applications. Fixation into polymeric matrices represents a suitable strategy to promote the benefits and reduce the drawbacks. Emulsification and electrospinning are largely used techniques for protection and stabilization of essential oils. These methods offer various advantages in active food packaging, such as controlled release, ensuring long-term performance, decreased amounts of active agents that gain enhanced functionality through increased available surface area in contact with food, and versatility in packaging design. This review focuses on creating correlations between the use of essential oils as natural additives, stabilization methods, and biodegradable polymeric matrices or substrates in developing bioactive food packaging materials. Documentation was performed via the Scopus, ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases, selecting the publications after the year 2018. Particular attention was given to the publications that tested materials on food/food pathogens to evaluate their performances in retarding spoilage. Research gaps were also identified on the topic, materials being tested mainly at short time after preparation without considering the long-term storage that usually occurs in actual practice between production and use, and insufficient research related to upscaling.

Abstract
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) contains active ingredients, such as flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins. Nevertheless, few studies have focused on essential oil from the receptacle of sunflower (SEO). In this work, we investigated the chemical composition and antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of SEO. The yield of SEO was about 0.42% (v/w) by hydrodistillation. A total of 68 volatile components of SEO were putatively identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main constituents of SEO were α-pinene (26.00%), verbenone (7.40%), terpinolene (1.69%) and α-terpineol (1.27%). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of SEO against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus was 0.2 mg/mL. The MIC of SEO against S. cerevisiae was 3.2 mg/mL. The MIC of SEO against E. coli and Candida albicans was 6.4 mg/mL. The results showed that SEO had high antibacterial and antifungal activities. Three different analytical assays (DPPH, ABTS and iron ion reducing ability) were used to determine the antioxidant activities. The results showed that SEO had antioxidant activities. To summarize, the results in this study demonstrate the possibility for the development and application of SEO in potential natural preservatives and medicines due to its excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

Abstract
Citrus blend black teas are popular worldwide, due to its unique flavor and remarkable health benefits. However, the aroma characteristics, aroma profiles and key odorants of it remain to be distinguished and cognized. In this study, the aroma profiles of 12 representative samples with three different cultivars including citrus (Citrus reticulata), bergamot (Citrus bergamia), and lemon (Citrus limon) were determined by a novel approach combined head space-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). A total of 348 volatile compounds, among which comprised esters (60), alkenes (55), aldehydes (45), ketones (45), alcohols (37), aromatic hydrocarbons (20), and some others were ultimately identified. The further partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) certified obvious differences existed among the three groups with a screening result of 30 significant differential key volatile compounds. A total of 61 aroma-active compounds that mostly presented green, fresh, fruity, and sweet odors were determined in three groups with gas chromatography-olfactometry/mass spectrometry (GC-O/MS) assisted analysis. Heptanal, limonene, linalool, and trans-β-ionone were considered the fundamental odorants associated with the flavors of these teas. Comprehensive analysis showed that limonene, ethyl octanoate, copaene, ethyl butyrate (citrus), benzyl acetate, nerol (bergamot) and furfural (lemon) were determined as the characterized odorants for each type.

Abstract
Penicillium digitatum is the primary pathogen causing the green mold of citrus. The need for the development of higher effective and lower toxic natural antifungal agents is urgent, owing to the lack of antifungal agents that can successfully combat P. digitatum. Herein, the effects and mechanisms of 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (MNQ) as a potential inhibitor of P. digitatumwere studied. First, MNQ showed a significant anti-P. digitatum effect with a minimum inhibitory concentration value of 5.0 μg/mL. Then, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome profiling were performed on the MNQ-treated P. digitatum. A total of 910 genes, 297 proteins, and 174 metabolites changed significantly. The omics analysis indicated that it could be seen that MNQ mainly inhibits the growth of P. digitatum by affecting the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids and cell walls. These findings will be a great contribution to the further understanding of the possible molecular action of MNQ.

Abstract
Penicillium italicum is the principal pathogen causing blue mold of citrus. Searching for novel antifungal agents is an important aspect of the post-harvest citrus industry because of the lack of higher effective and low toxic antifungal agents. Herein, the effects of 2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (MNQ) on P. italicum and its mechanism were carried out by a series of methods. MNQ had a significant anti-P. italicum effect with an MIC value of 5.0 µg/mL. The label-free protein profiling under different MNQ conditions identified a total of 3037 proteins in the control group and the treatment group. Among them, there were 129 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs, up-regulated > 2.0-fold or down-regulated < 0.5-fold, p < 0.05), 19 up-regulated proteins, 26 down-regulated proteins, and 67 proteins that were specific for the treatment group and another 17 proteins that were specific for the control group. Of these, 83 proteins were sub-categorized into 23 hierarchically-structured GO classifications. Most of the identified DEPs were involved in molecular function (47%), meanwhile 27% DEPs were involved in the cellular component and 26% DEPs were involved in the biological process. Twenty-eight proteins identified for differential metabolic pathways by KEGG were sub-categorized into 60 classifications. Functional characterization by GO and KEGG enrichment results suggests that the DEPs are mainly related to energy generation (mitochondrial carrier protein, glycoside hydrolase, acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, and ribulose-phosphate 3-epimerase), NADPH supply (enolase, pyruvate carboxylase), oxidative stress (catalase, glutathione synthetase), and pentose phosphate pathway (ribulose-phosphate 3-epimerase and xylulose 5-phosphate). Three of the down-regulated proteins selected randomly the nitro-reductase family protein, mono-oxygenase, and cytochrome P450 were verified using parallel reaction monitoring. These findings illustrated that MNQ may inhibit P. italicum by disrupting the metabolic processes, especially in energy metabolism and stimulus response that are both critical for the growth of the fungus. In conclusion, based on the molecular mechanisms, MNQ can be developed as a potential anti-fungi agent against P. italicum.
