Preparation of antifogging and enhanced antimicrobial biopolymer coating and its applications in lettuce preservation

A transparent p-coumaric acid-grafted-chitosan coating with antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifogging properties for fruit packaging applications

The study aimed to develop a novel, transparent and non-toxic coating with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antifogging properties. The p-coumaric acid-grafted chitosan (CS-PCA) was synthesized via a carbodiimide coupling reaction and then characterized. The CS-PCA coatings were further prepared using the casting method. The CS-PCA coatings obtained exhibited excellent transparency, UV-light barrier ability, and antifogging properties, as confirmed by spectroscopy and antifogging tests. The CS-PCA coatings showed stronger antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Botrytis cinerea compared to CS. The multifunctional coatings were further coated on the polyethylene cling film and their effectiveness was confirmed through a strawberry preservation test. The decay of the strawberries was reduced by CS-PCA coated film at room temperature.

Ethyl cellulose matrixed poly(sulfur-co-sorbic acid) composite films: Regulation of properties and application for food preservation

Developing non-toxic and sustainable materials with versatile and diverse functions has always been a crucial issue in food preservation packaging. Recently, inverse vulcanization has emerged as a precise and eco-friendly solution, attributed to the versatility of resulting polysulfides. In this study, a polysulfide crosslinked with sorbic acid was prepared by inverse vulcanization, and further combined with bio-macromolecular ethyl cellulose to form composite films via a casting method. Thanks to the ethanol-solubility and good compatibility of ethyl cellulose towards the polysulfide, morphology of the films can be tailored by adjusting the component ratio, thereby achieving favorable water vapor permeability (2.20 × 10-12 gs-1m-1Pa-1), oxygen permeability (4.01 × 10-4 gs-1 m-2), elasticity modulus (~400 MPa), elongation at break (~16 %), etc. Some films demonstrate remarkable antibacterial activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi, demonstrating their effectiveness in food preservation. The browning and spoilage of preserved Agaricus bisporus were inhibited, with 79.2 % of the initial firmness retained and a 5.6 % weight loss recorded on the 6th day. For the 15-day preservation of grapes, minimal changes in appearance, firmness, or TSS were observed, underscoring the promising potential of this composite for food preservation applications.

Techniques, applications and prospects of polysaccharide and protein based biopolymer coatings: A review

The growing relevance of sustainable materials has recently led to the exploration of naturally derived biopolymeric hydrogels as coating materials due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, ease of fabrication and modification. Although many review articles exist on biopolymeric coatings, they mainly focus on a specific polysaccharide, protein biopolymer, or a particular application- biomedical engineering or food preservation. The current review first summarizes the commonly used polysaccharide and protein-based biopolymers like chitosan, alginate, carrageenan, pectin, cellulose, starch, pullulan, agarose and silk fibroin, gelatin, respectively, with a systematic description of the techniques widely used for physical coating on substrates. Then, broad applications of these biopolymeric coatings on various substrates in biomedical engineering- 3D scaffolds, biomedical implants, and nanoparticles are described in detail. It also entails the application of biopolymeric coatings for food preservation in the form of food packaging and edible coatings. A brief discussion on the newly discovered interest in exploring biopolymers for anticorrosive coating applications is also included. Finally, concluding remarks on the role of biopolymer microstructures in forming homogeneous coatings, prospective alternatives to the currently used biopolymers as coating material and the advent of computer-aided technologies to expedite experimental findings are presented.
