Unrevealing variation of microbial communities and correlation with environmental variables in a full culture-cycle of Undaria pinnatifida

Environmental heterogeneity caused by large-scale cultivation of Pyropia haitanensis shapes multi-group biodiversity distribution in coastal areas

The response of marine biodiversity to mariculture has long been a research focus in marine ecology. However, the effects of seaweed cultivation on biological community assembly are poorly understood, especially in diverse communities with distinct ecological characteristics. In this study, we used environmental DNA metabarcoding to investigate the spatial distribution patterns of bacterial, protistan, and metazoan diversity, aiming to reveal the mechanisms of community assembly in the Pyropia haitanensis cultivation zone along the Fujian coast, China. We found that, compared with the biological communities in control zones, those in P. haitanensis cultivation zones exhibited stronger geographic distance-decay patterns and displayed more complex and stable network structures. Deterministic processes (environmental selection) played a more important role in the assembly of bacterial, protistan, and metazoan communities in P. haitanensis cultivation zones, especially metazoan communities. Variance partitioning analysis showed that environmental variables made greater contributions to the diversity of the three types of communities within the P. haitanensis cultivation zones than in the control zones. Partial least squares path modeling analysis identified nitrate‑nitrogen (NO3-N), pH, particulate organic carbon (POC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as the key environmental variables affecting biodiversity. Overall, the environmental heterogeneity caused by the large-scale cultivation of P. haitanensis could be the crucial factor influencing the composition and structure of various biological communities. Our results highlight the importance of the responses of multi-group organisms to the cultivation of seaweed, and provide insights into the coexistence patterns of biodiversity at the spatial scale.

Spatial distribution characteristics and interaction effects of DOM and microbial communities in kelp cultivation areas

The influence of macroalgae cultivation on aquaculture carbon sinks is significant, with microbial carbon (C) pumps contributing to a stable inert dissolved carbon pool in this context. Concurrently, dissolved organic matter (DOM) exchange at the marine sediment-water interface profoundly affects global ecosystem element cycling. However, the interactions between DOM and bacterial communities at the sediment-water interface in kelp cultivation areas, especially regarding microbial function prediction, have not been fully explored. This study analyzed the DOM characteristics, environmental factors, and bacterial community structure in the Tahewan kelp--Saccharina japonica cultivated area and compared them with those in non-cultivated areas. The results indicated significantly higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in the kelp culture area, particularly in surface seawater and overlying water. The dominant bacterial phyla in both regions included Pseudomonadota, Actinomycetota, and Bacteroidota in both regions, while Desulfobacterota was more prevalent in the sediment environment of the cultivated region. Parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) was used to identify DOM components, among which component C2 (a microbial humic-like substance DOM) was highly resistant to microbial degradation. We infer that C2 has similar properties to recalcitrant dissolved organic matter (RDOM). Analysis of the predicted functional genes based on 16S rRNA gene data showed that methanol oxidation, methylotrophy, and methanotrophy were significant in the bottom seawater of the cultivation area. The carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) cycle functional genes in the sediment environment of the kelp cultivation area were more active than those in other areas, especially in which sulfate reduction and denitrification were the two main processes. Furthermore, a DOM priming effect was identified in the cultivated sediment environment, where kelp-released labile dissolved organic matter (LDOM) stimulates rapid degradation of the original RDOM, potentially enhancing C sequestration.

Assembly mechanisms of microbial communities in plastisphere related to species taxonomic types and habitat niches

A lot of plastic floats are presented in the kelp cultivation zone, enabling us to effectively evaluate the differences between surface water (SW) and plastic-attached (PA) microbial communities. In this study, we explored the microbial communities (both bacteria and protists) in SW and PA niches during the kelp cultivation activities. Effects of habitat niches on the diversity and composition of microbial communities were found. Beta partitioning and core taxa analyses showed species turnover and local species pool governed the microbial community assembly, and they contributed more to bacteria and protists, respectively. Based on the results of null model, bacterial communities presented a more deterministic and homogeneous assembly compared to protistan communities. Moreover, microbial communities in PA niche had higher species turnover and homogenizing assembly compared to the SW niche. The results of this study supplemented the theory of microbial community assembly and expanded our understanding of protists in plastisphere.

Diversity, composition and ecological networks of bacterial communities in response to a full cultivation cycle of the seaweed, Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis

Cultivation of the seaweed, Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis, supports environmental bioremediation and the aquaculture economy in coastal ecosystems, and microorganisms play important roles during the cultivation process. In this study, we aimed to understand the response of bacterial communities through a full cultivation cycle of G. lemaneiformis. We analyzed the bacterial communities using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and defined the environmental factors of 144 water samples from the Nan'ao Island, South China Sea. Community diversity, keystone species and ecological networks of bacterial communities shifted markedly in the cultivation zone largely due to changes in the environmental factors, seaweed biomass and cultivation stages. The bacterial communities at the seaweed zone have lower species richness, more seaweed-associated taxa and simpler but more stable co-occurrence networks compared to the control zone. Persistent microbial groups such as Aquimarina, Formosa, Glaciecola and Marinobacter exhibited a strong association with seaweed during the growth and maturity stages. We describe a conceptual model to summarize the changes in the bacterial community composition, its diversity and the ecological networks in seaweed cultivation zone. Overall, this study provides new perspectives on the dynamic interaction of seaweed cultivation, bacterial communities and environment factors and their potential ecosystem services as observed in the example of the G. lemaneiformis cultivation ecosystem.

Influence of ammonia nitrogen management strategies on microbial communities in biofloc-based aquaculture systems

Controlling ammonia nitrogen is very important in intensive aquaculture. This study evaluated how different management strategies, i.e., chemoautotrophic (control), heterotrophic bacterial enhancement using carbon in glucose or polyhydroxy butyrate-hydroxy valerate (PHBV), and mature biofloc application, affect water quality and microbial community structure and composition. The management strategies were examined during the domestication and fish culture stages. In the domestication stage, the average NO2--N concentration, pH, and DO in the glucose-added groups were significantly lower than those in the control and PHBV groups. All water quality parameters differed significantly among treatment groups in the culture stage. Carbon additions decreased both bacterial richness and diversity in the fish culture stage. Both principal coordinate analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis grouped the 33 bacteria community samples from the two stages into four clusters, which were closely related to management strategy. The dominant taxa of the clusters were identified using linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe). The biomarkers of Cluster I included Marinomonas, Photobacterium, and Vibrio. Porticoccus and Clade-1a were identified as the biomarkers of Cluster II. Marivia, Leucothrix, and Phaeodactylibacter were identified as the biomarkers of Cluster IV. The Cluster I biomarkers were positively correlated with NO2--N, while those of Cluster IV were positively correlated with NO3--N. The redundancy analysis showed that the bacterial communities and biomarkers were influenced by water quality parameters. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed significant differences in the abundances of the amoA and nxrB genes among treatments and between the two stages. The abundance of the amoA gene was higher in the control group than in the carton-added treatments at the ends of both stages. This study provides an important theoretical basis for the selection of efficient ammonia nitrogen control strategies in aquaculture systems.

Distinct assembly processes and environmental adaptation of abundant and rare archaea in Arctic marine sediments

Revealing the ecological processes and environmental adaptation of abundant and rare archaea is a central, but poorly understood, topic in ecology. Here, abundant and rare archaeal diversity, community assembly processes and co-occurrence patterns were comparatively analyzed in Arctic marine sediments. Our findings revealed that the rare taxa exhibited significantly higher diversity compared to the abundant taxa. Additionally, the abundant taxa displayed stronger environmental adaptation than the rare taxa. The co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that the rare taxa developed more interspecies interactions and modules in response to environmental disturbance. Furthermore, the community assembly of abundant and rare taxa in sediments was primarily controlled by stochastic and deterministic processes, respectively. These findings provide valuable insights into the archaeal community assembly processes and significantly contribute to a deeper understanding of the environmental adaptability of abundant and rare taxa in Arctic marine sediments.

Kelp Culture Enhances Coastal Biogeochemical Cycles by Maintaining Bacterioplankton Richness and Regulating Its Interactions

As an important carbon sink, seaweed cultivation plays a vital role in controlling global climate change. However, most studies have been focused on the seaweed itself, and knowledge of bacterioplankton dynamics in seaweed cultivation activities is still limited. Here, a total of 80 water samples were obtained from a coastal kelp cultivation area and adjacent non-culture area in the seedling and mature stages. The bacterioplankton communities were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes, and the microbial genes involving biogeochemical cycles were measured by a high-throughput quantitative PCR (qPCR) chip. Seasonal variations in alpha diversity indices of bacterioplankton were found, and kelp cultivation mitigated this decline in biodiversity from the seedling to the mature stage. Further beta diversity and core taxa analyses revealed that the maintenance of biodiversity was due to kelp cultivation favoring the survival of rare bacteria. Comparisons of gene abundances between coastal water with and without kelp cultivation showed a more powerful capacity of biogeochemical cycles induced by kelp cultivation. More importantly, a positive relationship between bacterial richness and biogeochemical cycling functions was observed in samples with kelp cultivation. Finally, a co-occurrence network and pathway model indicated that the higher bacterioplankton biodiversity in kelp culture areas compared to non-mariculture regions could balance the microbial interactions to regulate biogeochemical cycles and thus enhance the ecosystem functions of kelp cultivation coasts. The findings of this study allow us to better understand the effects of kelp cultivation on coastal ecosystems and provide novel insights into the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functions. IMPORTANCE In this study, we tried to address the effects of seaweed cultivation on the microbial biogeochemical cycles and the underlying relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functions. We revealed clear enhancement of biogeochemical cycles in the seaweed cultivation areas compared to the non-mariculture coasts at both the beginning and ending of the culture cycle. Moreover, the enhanced biogeochemical cycling functions in the culture areas were found to contribute to the richness and interspecies interactions of bacterioplankton communities. The findings of this study allow us to better understand the effects of seaweed cultivation on coastal ecosystems and provide novel insights into the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

Multi-dimensional investigation and distribution characteristics analysis of gut microbiota of different marine fish in Fujian Province of China

The gut microbiota plays an important role in animal health and behavior. In marine fish, the composition of the gut microbiota is affected by many complex factors, such as diet, species, and regional factors. Since more than one hundred fish species have been cultured in fish farms along with the 3,324 km coastline of Fujian Province in South China, we chose this region to study the gut microbiota composition of marine commercial fishes because sufficient different species, diets, and regional factors were observed. We investigated the distribution characteristics of the gut microbiota of seven cultured species (Epinephelus akaara, Epinephelus coioides, Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂ × Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀, Siganus fuscescens, Pagrus major, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Acanthopagrus schlegelii) living in the same aquatic region and one species (E. akaara) living separately in five regions separated by latitude. The impacts of diet, region, and species factors on fish gut microbiota were also evaluated. Diversity and multivariate analyses showed that the patterns of the microbiota were significantly different in different fish species within the same habitat and E. akaara with five latitude regions. Mantel analysis showed that AN, SiO₃^2–, DO, and NO₂^– were the principal factors affecting the microbial community of E. akaara in the five habitats. Additionally, similar distribution characteristics occurred in different gut parts of different fishes, with an increasing trend of Proteobacteria and Vibrionaceae abundance and a decreasing trend of Firmicutes and Bacillaceae abundance from the foregut to the hindgut. Vibrionaceae was the most abundant family in the content. This study highlights that a persistent core microbiota was established in marine commercial fishes spanning multiple scales. The factors with the greatest effect on fish gut microbiota may be (i) host genetics and (ii) geographic factors rather than the microbiota in the diet and water environment. These core microbes regularly colonized from the foregut to the hindgut, which was driven by their underlying functions, and they were well adapted to the gut environment. Moreover, the microbiota in the content may have contributed more to the gut microbial communities than previously reported. This study could complement basic data on the composition of marine commercial fishes and facilitate relatively complete investigations, which would be beneficial for the healthy and sustainable development of aquaculture.

Apex Predators Enhance Environmental Adaptation but Reduce Community Stability of Bacterioplankton in Crustacean Aquaculture Ponds

Aquaculture environments harbor complex bacterial communities that are critical for the growth and health of culture species. Apex predators are frequently added to aquaculture ponds to improve ecosystem stability. However, limited research has explored the effects of apex predators on the composition and function of bacterioplankton communities, as well as the underlying mechanisms of community assembly. Using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) high-throughput sequencing, we investigated bacterioplankton communities of crustacean aquaculture ponds with and without apex predators (mandarin fish, Siniperca chuatsi) throughout the culture process. In addition to investigating differences in bacterioplankton communities, we also explored variations in environmental adaptation, functional redundancy, and community stability. Significant differences were observed in bacterioplankton composition among different cultural stages; there was an increase in Bacteriobota and fermentation-related bacteria, but a decrease in Firmicutes and pathogens in the middle stages of aquaculture. Apex predators increased the abundance of organic matter degradation bacteria and decreased pathogens. Bacterioplankton communities under apex predator disturbances had a wider environmental breadth, indicating broader environmental adaptation. Moreover, functional prediction and network analyses revealed that communities under apex predator disturbances were less functionally redundant and unstable. Based on the null model, stochastic processes drove community assembly during aquaculture, whereas apex predators elevated the contribution of deterministic processes. Greater changes in nitrate in culture ponds caused by apex predator disturbances were decisive in controlling the balance between stochasticity and determinism in community assembly. Our study provided insight into the mechanisms underlying bacterioplankton community assembly in aquaculture systems in response to apex predator disturbances.

The fate of antibiotic resistance genes, microbial community, and potential pathogens in the maricultural sediment by live seaweeds and oxytetracycline

Three common seaweeds including Ulva fasciata, Codium cylindricum and Ishige okamurai were used for the remediation of maricultural wastewater and sediment in the presence/absence of trace level of oxytetracycline (OTC) in lab-scale experiments. Higher NO₃^--N and PO₄^3--P removal rates were achieved due to the presence of seaweeds, and trace OTC also had a positive effect on NO₃^--N removal. A slight variation of 2.10-2.15% were observed in the total relative abundances of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) of different sediment samples after one-month operation. However, the variation of ARGs profiles by the co-existence of different seaweeds and OTC was in the descending order of Ishige okamurai > Codium cylindricum > Ulva fasciata, which was in accordance with the variation of microbial hosts at genus level. The abundance of dominant tetracycline resistance genes promoted by the co-existence of different seaweeds and OTC in compared with the presence of single seaweed or OTC via metagenomic sequencing and qPCR analysis, and the co-existence of Ishige okamurai and OTC exhibited the largest impact. The potential pathogens were more sensitive to the co-existence of seaweed and OTC than single seaweeds. Meanwhile, a variety of ARGs were enriched in the pathogens, and the dominant pathogenic bacteria of Vibrio had 133 Vibrio species with 28 subtypes of ARGs. The variation of ARGs profiles in the sediment were strongly related with the dominant phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes and Cyanobacteria. Besides, Nitrate level exhibited more significant effect on ∑ARGs, ARGs resistant to vancomycin and streptogramin_a, while phosphate level exhibited more positively significant effect on ARGs resistant to fosmidomycin, ATFBT and cephalosporin.

Exploiting the gut microbiota to predict the origins and quality traits of cultured sea cucumbers

Nowadays, the true economic and nutritional value of food is underpinned by both origin and quality traits, more often expressed as increased quality benefits derived from the origin source. Gut microbiota contribute to food metabolism and host health, therefore, it may be suitable as a qualifying indicator of origin and quality of economic species. Here, we investigated relationships between the gut microbiota of the sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus), a valuable aquaculture species in Asia, with their origins and quality metrics. Based on data from 287 intestinal samples, we generated the first biogeographical patterns for A. japonicus gut microbiota from origins across China. Importantly, A. japonicus origins were predicted using the random forest model that was constructed using 20 key gut bacterial genera, with 97.6% accuracy. Furthermore, quality traits such as saponin, fat and taurine were also successfully predicted by random forest models based on gut microbiota, with approximately 80% consistency between predicted and true values. We showed that substantial variations existed in the gut microbiota and quality variables in A. japonicus across different origins, and we also demonstrated the great potential of gut microbiota to track A. japonicus origins and predict their quality traits.

Review of drivers and threats to coastal groundwater quality in China

With rapid socio-economic development, China's coastal areas are among the fastest growing and most economically dynamic regions in the world. Under the influence of climate change and human activities, protecting the quality of coastal groundwater has emerged as one of the key environmental and resource management issues for these areas. This paper reviews (for the first time) groundwater quality data for the coastal basins of China, where over 600 million people live, focussing on key inorganic indicators/pollutants; groundwater salinity, nitrate, fluoride, and arsenic. These pollutants present major water quality issues and are also valuable as indicators of wider processes and influences impacting coastal groundwater quality - e.g. saltwater intrusion, agricultural pollution and release of geo-genic contaminants. We discuss the major drivers causing water quality problems in different regions and assess future trajectories and challenges for controlling changes in coastal groundwater quality in China. Multiple processes, including modern and palaeo seawater/brine migration, groundwater pumping for agricultural irrigation, pollution from agrochemical application, rapid development of aquaculture, urban growth, and water transfer projects, may all be responsible (to different degrees) for changes observed in coastal groundwater quality, and associated long-term health and ecological effects. We discuss implications for sustainable coastal aquifer management in China, arguing that groundwater monitoring and contamination control measures require urgent improvement. The evolution and treatment of coastal groundwater quality problems in China will serve as an important warning and example for other countries facing similar pressures, due to climate change, coastal development, and intensification of anthropogenic activity in coming decades.

Dynamic and Assembly of Benthic Bacterial Community in an Industrial-Scale In-Pond Raceway Recirculating Culture System

To reduce water utilization, limit environmental pollution, and guarantee aquatic production and quality, the in-pond raceway recirculating culture system (IPRS) has been developed and is widely used. The effectiveness and sustainability of IPRSs rely on a good understanding of the ecological processes related to bacterial communities in the purification area. In this study, we investigated the dynamics and assembly mechanisms of benthic bacterial communities in the purification area of an industrial-scale IRPS. We found significant temporal and spatial variations in the sediment characteristics and benthic bacterial communities of the IPRS, although correlation analyses revealed a very limited relationship between them. Among the different culture stages, we identified numerous benthic bacteria with different abundances. Abundances of the phyla Bacteroidota and Desulfobacterota decreased whereas those of Myxococcota and Gemmatimonadota increased as the culture cycle progressed. Co-occurrence networks revealed that the bacterial community was less complex but more stable in the IPRS at the final stage compared with the initial stage. The neutral community model (NCM) showed that stochastic processes were the dominant ecological processes shaping the assembly of the benthic bacterial community. The null model suggested that homogenizing dispersal was more powerful than dispersal limitation and drift in regulating the assembly of the community. These findings indicate that the benthic microbial communities in purification areas of the IPRS may not be affected by the deposited wastes, and a more stable benthic microbial communities were formed and mainly driven by stochastic processes. However, the benthic microbial communities in the purification area at the end of the culturing stage was characterized by potentially inhibited organic matter degradation and carbon and sulfur cycling abilities, which was not corresponding to the purification area’s function. From this point on, the IPRS, especially the purification area was needed to be further optimized and improved.

The addition of sawdust reduced the emission of nitrous oxide in pig manure composting by altering the bacterial community structure and functions

Although composting, a measure to dispose agricultural waste, is widely accepted and applied, specific knowledge of microbially driven effects on nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions during composting remains limited. Here, we monitored the impact of sawdust on N₂O emissions during pig manure composting. The results suggested that adding sawdust to the compost improved the compost temperature and reduced N₂O emissions. The addition of sawdust significantly altered the bacterial community structure and enhanced community turnover during the composting process. The addition of sawdust significantly reduced the relative abundance of denitrification and ureolysis, while increasing the relative abundance of nitrogen fixation. Specifically, adding sawdust may reduce N₂O emissions by reducing the relative abundance of Salinithrix, Truepera, Azomonas, Iamia, Silanimonas, Phycisphaera, and Gp21 during the thermophilic and mature phases of the composting period.

Soil fungal community affected by regional climate played an important role in the decomposition of organic compost

A large amount of organic compost, produced with agricultural and breeding industry wastes by composting, is widely used in agriculture in China. The microbial decomposition of organic compost is a major flux in the nutrition cycle in sustainable agricultural soils. To explore the mechanism of organic compost mineralization in soil, in situ decomposition experiments of organic compost buried in soils were arranged in three different latitude regions located in Jilin, Jiangsu, and Yunnan in China. The results showed that organic compost had different decomposition rates at the three different sites, with the highest decomposition rate in Yunnan, followed by Jiangsu and Jilin. The decomposition rates of unsterilized organic compost were significantly greater than those of sterilized organic compost, indicating that the microorganisms in organic compost also made important contributions to the decomposition process. The soil microbial diversity and community structure among the three sites were significantly different. The fungal community, especially fungal richness, rather than the bacterial community in the soil, plays a major role in the decomposition of organic compost. The annual average temperature is an important environmental factor affecting fungal richness. This study will provide a reference for formulating agricultural fertilization models in different regions.

Seasonal and spatial distribution and assembly processes of bacterioplankton communities in a subtropical urban river

The ecological functions of core and non-core bacteria are gradually being identified, yet little is known about their responses to environmental changes and assembly processes, especially in urban river ecosystems. Here, we investigated bacterioplankton communities over 1 year in an urban section of the Ganjiang River, China. The results revealed that the alpha- and beta-diversity of bacterioplankton communities had no significant spatial differences along the urbanization gradient, but they presented distinct seasonal variations. The bacterioplankton communities were comprised of a few core taxa (11.8%) and a large number of non-core taxa (88.2%), of which the non-core taxa were the most active component responsible for community dynamics. Most non-core taxa (76.84%) belonged to non-typical freshwater bacteria, implying that they are more likely to derive from allochthonous inputs than the core taxa. Variance partitioning analyses showed that air temperature, flow rate and water chemistry together explained 58.2 and 38.9% of the variations of the core taxa and non-core taxa, respectively. In addition, the relative importance of temperature and water chemistry on the bacterioplankton communities prevailed over that of flow rate alone. This means that deterministic processes and stochastic processes simultaneously control the bacterioplankton community assembly, with deterministic processes contributing more than stochastic processes.

Age-associated variation in the gut microbiota of chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) reveals differences in food metabolism

Age is known to affect the gut microbiota in various animals; however, this relationship is poorly understood in seabirds. We investigated the temporal succession of gut microbiota in captive chinstrap penguins of different ages using high-throughput sequencing. The gut microbiota exhibited a significant age succession pattern, reaching maturity in adults and then declining with increasing age. Only 15 amplicon sequence variants were shared among the gut microbiota in chinstrap penguins at all studied ages, and these contributed to most of the age-related variations in total gut microbiota. Co-occurrence networks found that these key bacteria belonged to the genera Acinetobacter, Clostridium sensu stricto, and Fusobacterium, and more species interactions were found within the same taxonomy. Functional prediction indicated that most of the metabolic functions were more abundant in the gut microbiota in adult chinstrap penguins, except for carbohydrate metabolism, which was significantly more abundant in older individuals.

Planktonic and sediment bacterial communities in an integrated mariculture system

An integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system, with one fish cage model surrounded by an island and shellfish rafts, was used in the current study. Planktonic and sediment bacterial communities in the IMTA system were monitored over four seasons in 2019. In both plankton and sediment samples, the most dominant phyla were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. Sediment bacterial samples were more similar and had higher levels of biodiversity than planktonic bacterial samples. Obvious seasonal variations were found in plankton samples, but not in sediment samples. No obvious inter-site variations in planktonic and sediment bacteria (fish cages, shellfish rafts and control sites) were found and the results suggested that no obvious impact of feeding operations in fish culture cage model on bacterial communities in the IMTA system was observed in this study. Based on the sequence data, some faecal indicator bacteria and potentially pathogenic bacterial species were detected. According to the results, the bacterial water quality in the IMTA system was acceptable. PICRUSt (Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States) analysis revealed that the primary difference in potential functional roles of planktonic and sediment bacteria was amino acid transport and metabolism, which was active in different seasons.
