Distribution, toxicity and bioaccumulation of trace metals in environmental matrices of an estuary in a protected area

Mangroves are productive ecosystems that are highly threatened by anthropogenic activities. We investigated the environmental quality of the Serinhaém river estuary located in a legally protected area. Through chemical analysis of sediments and tissues of Cardisoma guanhumi, in addition to bioassays with elutriate involving Nitokra sp. and Thalassiosira pseudonana, we determined the contamination status and risk factors related to trace metals in the estuary. For the sediment, the concentrations of Cr and Ni were above the limit established by CONAMA n° 454/2012 in the "City" site, and Cr above the TEL in all sampling sites. Ecotoxicological tests showed high toxicity in samples from "City" and "Tributary". The elements Cr, Mn, Ni and Zn were also higher in crabs from these sites. Cr levels exceeded the Brazilian limit for food consumption. The bioaccumulation factor was not significant. However, the overall analysis proved that this estuary is increasingly impacted by anthropogenic pressure.

Levels, source appointment, and ecological risk of petroleum hydrocarbons in tropical coastal ecosystems (northeast Brazil): Baseline for future monitoring programmes of an oil spill area

We reviewed 20 years of levels, sources, and environmental risks related to the main petroleum hydrocarbons in the northeast region of Brazil. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to serve as a comprehensive baseline for future monitoring programmes related to the oil spill disaster in 2019/2020. Most contamination levels of both PAHs and AHs were classified as low, except those in specific areas influenced by human activities, such as ports, highly urbanised mangroves, or rivers of medium-sized cities with inadequate liquid and solid waste treatment. Most hydrocarbons were linked to natural sources and burning processes, except in regions of extraction activities and petrochemical facilities as well as highly urbanised areas, where degraded petroleum and oil hydrocarbons predominated. Only 2.5% of the samples exceeded threshold effect levels for ∑_16-PAHs and no samples exceeded probable effect levels. When regional threshold levels were used, however, the probable effect for the ∑_16-PAHs measured was high, ranging from 5.8 to 6.1%. The few studies reporting biological responses showed that hydrocarbons from anthropogenic sources can induce adverse effects on marine organisms even at low to moderate levels. As the region has recently received a considerable quantity of crude oil, studies should be prioritised for a more precise assessment of the impact of this oil spill.

Operational DGT threshold values for metals in seawater from protected coastal areas in Sardinia (Western Mediterranean)

Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGTs) were used for monitoring metal (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Pb) concentrations in protected and non-protected coastal areas in Sardinia (Western Mediterranean). The deployment of DGTs in relatively undisturbed areas enabled calculation of operational DGT threshold values, which can be used for assessments of the environmental quality of coastal areas. The DGT thresholds were defined as the median metal concentrations that were found in protected areas, which ensured consideration of the natural variability of the different study sites. The calculated DGT thresholds were 11.6 ng L^-1 for Pb, 5.1 ng L^-1 for Cd, 63 ng L^-1 for Cu and 152 ng L^-1 for Ni. A comparison of the calculated DGT thresholds with previous DGT studies in the area demonstrated their suitability for identifying sites of environmental concern in the Western Mediterranean.

Distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of a Tropical Bay influenced by anthropogenic activities (Todos os Santos Bay, BA, Brazil)

The present study aimed to evaluate the distribution and origin of 16 Priority PAHs in surficial sediment samples of Todos os Santos Bay (TSB, Brazil). Total PAHs concentrations ranged from below the method detection limit (<DL) to 533 ng g^-1 (dry weight). The toxic equivalent concentrations (TEQ^carc) of PAHs in the studied area ranged from 0 to 104 ng g^-1 and were lower when compared to other contaminated bays in the world. Diagnostic ratios indicated that pyrogenic processes, such as pyrolysis of fossil fuel, biomass, and coal, were the main PAHs sources for sediments. Proximity of the sources, the hydrodynamics and geochemistry of the sediments were the factor influencing the distribution of PAHs along the studied area.
