Seasonal changes of LAS, phosphate, and chlorophyll-a concentrations in coastal surface water of the Prince Islands, Marmara Sea

Impact of land development along the western Mediterranean coast of Egypt regarding surfactant sources, interfering elements and ecotoxicity

The effect of recent land development of the western side of the Egyptian Mediterranean coast on the fates, behaviors, interactions, and ecotoxicology of surfactant (LAS), F, Br, B, Ca, Mg, and P was studied. Samples of seawater and sediments were collected from 15 stations at different depths representing, 5 perpendicular sectors. Elevated levels of LAS were identified in seawater columns in the El-Hamam (467.3 ± 220.8 μg/L) and El-Dabaa (480.0 ± 314.1 μg/L) stations. LAS homologue in sediment was in the range of 0.013-0.024, 0.042-0.184, 0.086-0.402, and 0.025-0.058 μg/g for C10, C11, C12, and C13, respectively. Studied parameters showed mixture risk characterization ratios RCRmix > 1 for algae, invertebrates, and fish in seawater and sediments, except for P, which showed low risk (RCRmix ≤ 1) in sediment. Acute relative contribution (RC) of LAS reflected that fish were the most sensitive species (RCFish = 48.5), followed by algae (RCAlgae = 44.4) and invertebrates (RCInvert = 7.1).

Impact of mixing on water quality in the Bosphorus - Implications on sustainable management of wastewater marine discharges

The study established the water quality modelling of the Bosphorus system, based on hydrodynamic data as well as the results of the water quality survey carried out in the last five years. The model revealed significant decrease in the magnitude of pollutant loads in the upper layer at the exit into The Marmara Sea providing numerical proof that no pollutant transport would take place from sewage discharges to the upper layer. A similar modelling approach was implemented at the Bosphorus/Marmara interface, a significant hotspot as it included two major deep marine outfalls. The results asserted that the entire sewage flow would enter the lower flow in The Bosphorus through the interface without an appreciable mixing with the upper flow. This way, the study provided a significant scientific support for the sustainable management of marine discharges in this area, since they have no physical interference with The Marmara Sea.

Super Pressure-Resistant Superhydrophobic Fabrics with Real Self-Cleaning Performance

Detergents are extensively used for laundry, causing significant negative impacts on water bodies, plants and animals. Superhydrophobic fabrics are promising to reduce detergent consumption but suffer from low pressure resistance. Here, we report super pressure-resistant superhydrophobic fabrics prepared using polysiloxane modified SiO₂ nanoparticles with epoxy groups. The fabrics show real self-cleaning performance, essentially different from the conventional self-cleaning property of solid particles loosely placed on superhydrophobic surfaces. The contaminated fabrics by various stains can be completely cleaned by home machine laundering without using any detergent whereas the traditional superhydrophobic fabrics cannot. This is owing to excellent abrasion and washing durability, low liquid adhesion force, superior pressure-resistance and vapor-resistance of the fabrics, originating from the low surface energy and dense micro-/nanostructure. Moreover, the superhydrophobic fabrics can be scaled up using the conventional fabric finishing line with low cost. The superhydrophobic fabrics will help significantly reduce the global detergent consumption.

Pollutant dynamics between The Black Sea and The Marmara Sea: Basis for wastewater management strategy

The study evaluated pollutant dynamics between The Black Sea and The Marmara Sea using data collected during a marine survey of the region around The Bosphorus strait, in the last five years. A hydraulic model was utilized to define two-layered water exchange in The Bosphorus. Analysis of pollutant exchange indicated The Black Sea as major polluter for the marine environment in The Marmara Sea. Four wastewater outfalls are located along The Bosphorus; Mass balances between the two ends of The Bosphorus indicated losses of 44 t/d total N and 138 t/d COD in the lower layer before reaching The Black Sea. This was explained with a simultaneous nitrification-denitrification process sustained in the low oxygen or anoxic zones around the outfalls, implying that a sustainable wastewater strategy should preclude additional treatment for The Bosphorus discharges, since they do not have an appreciable impact on the water quality of the lower flow.
