Nutrient distribution and structure affect the behavior and speciation of arsenic in coastal waters: A case study in southwestern coast of the Laizhou Bay, China

Measurements and analysis of nitrogen and phosphorus in oceans: Practice, frontiers, and insights

Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in oceans have been extensively studied, and advancements in associated disciplines have rapidly progressed, enabling the exploration of novel and previously challenging questions. A keyword analysis was conducted using the Scopus database to examine chronological trends and hotspots, offering comprehensive insights into the evolution of marine nitrogen and phosphorus research. For this purpose, author keyword networks were developed for the periods before 1990, 1990 to 2000, 2001 to 2011, and 2012 to 2022. Furthermore, analytical techniques employed in the recent decade to determine nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in seawater were assessed for their applicability and limitations through a critical review of more than 50 journal articles. Taxonomy and nitrogen biogeochemistry were the prominent research interests for the first two periods, respectively, while stable isotopic tracking of nitrogen and phosphorus processes emerged as the dominant research focus for the last two decades. The integration of macroeconomic factors in research development and the chronological rise of interdisciplinary research were identified. Conventional analytical techniques such as spectrophotometry, colorimetry, fluorometry, and elemental analysis were noted, along with emerging techniques like remote sensing and microfluidic sensors.

Phosphorus distribution in the water and sediment of Laizhou Bay and sediment phosphorus release potential

Phosphorus is an integral component of marine biogeochemistry. This research investigated the environmental behavior of P in Laizhou Bay using high-resolution sampling, P fractionation, and isotherm adsorption. The total dissolved P (TDP) concentration ranged from 8.4 to 61.0 μg/L in the bay water, while total P (TP) concentration ranged from 311.6 to 654.5 mg/kg in the sediment. The TDP concentration in the water was high in the estuarine area of the Yellow River and the southwestern bay under the combined effects of riverine inputs, direct wastewater discharge, and limited water exchange ability. High TP concentrations in the sediment were observed near the mouth of the Yellow River and central bay, mainly due to the movement and settlement of fine suspended particles under the influence of ocean currents. The P in the bay sediment was predominantly in the calcium-bound fraction and was associated with small particles such as silt and clay. The equilibrium P concentration (EPC₀) ranged from 1.6 to 131.4 μg/L, and P partition coefficient or buffer intensity (K_d) ranged from 104 L/kg to 880 L/kg. The EPC₀ decreased from the northeastern to southwestern area, while K_d showed an inverse distribution; therefore, the southwestern bay sediment had high buffer intensity for external P loads. Additionally, ECP₀ increased linearly, and K_d decreased with exchangeable P (Exc-P) and Fe-bound P (Fe-P) concentrations in the sediment, demonstrating that P sediment-water exchange in LZB was dominated by contributions from Exc-P and Fe-P. These results can aid the understanding of the P sources and geochemistry of coastal ecosystems, particularly sediment P release potential.

The effects of acidification on arsenic concentration and speciation in offshore shallow water system

The effects of acidification on speciation and transportation of arsenic in shallow seawater system were investigated based on data from acidification simulation experiments in lab scale tanks, in which enhanced levels of pCO₂ corresponding to pH_T were processed. The results showed that: (1) the concentration of DIAs (Dissolved inorganic arsenic), As⁵⁺ and As³⁺ in the overlying water increased with experimental CO₂ enrichment; (2) while the ratio of As⁵⁺/As³⁺ decreased; (3) acidification could cause more DIAs transport into the overlying water from sediments or suspended particulate matters, and would be favorable to the existence of As³⁺. Thus, DIAs is available to microorganisms and can be taken in effectively by microorganisms in the shallow water system, resulting in toxic effects of As on microorganisms and thus the inhibition of the growth of microorganisms.

Insights into the spatiotemporal occurrence and mixture risk assessment of household and personal care products in the waters from rivers to Laizhou Bay, southern Bohai Sea

Household and personal care products (HPCPs) are a kind of contaminants closely related to daily life, capturing worldwide concern. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt focusing on the spatiotemporal occurrence and mixture risk of HPCPs in the waters from rivers to Laizhou Bay. Nine HPCPs were quantitated in 216 water samples gathered from Laizhou Bay and its adjacent rivers in 2018, 2019, and 2021 to reveal the spatiotemporal occurrence and mixture ecological risks in Laizhou Bay. Eight HPCPs were detected with detection frequencies ranging from 74% to 100%. The total concentrations were in the ranges 105-721 ng L^-1 in river water and 51.3-332 ng L^-1 in seawater. The HPCPs were dominated by p-hydroxybenzoic and triclosan, which together contributed over 75% of the total HPCPs. The average level of the total HPCP concentration in the summer of 2018 (96.1 ng L^-1) was slightly exceed that in the spring of 2019 (91.6 ng L^-1), which is associated with the higher usage of HPCPs and enhanced tourism during summer. However, the highest total concentrations were found in spring of 2021 (124 ng L^-1 in average), which was attribute to a higher level of methylparaben, a predominant paraben used as preservatives in commercial pharmaceuticals of China. Influenced by riverine inputs and ocean currents, higher HPCP concentrations in Laizhou Bay were found nearby the estuary of Yellow River and the southern part of the bay. Triclosan should be given constant concern considering its medium to high risks (RQ > 0.1) in nearly 80% of the water samples. The cumulative risk assessment in two approaches revealed that HPCP mixtures generally elicit medium or high risk to three main aquatic taxa. Considering the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19, the levels and risks of multiple HPCPs in natural waters requires constant attention in future studies.

Single toxicity of arsenic and combined trace metal exposure to a microalga of ecological and commercial interest: Diacronema lutheri

Eco-toxicological assays with species of economic interest such as Diacronema lutheri are essential for industries that produce aquaculture feed, natural food additives and also in drug developing industries. Our study involved the exposure of a single and combined toxicity of arsenic (As V) to D. lutheri for the entire algal growth phase and highlighted that a combined exposure of As V with other essential (Copper, Cu; Nickel, Ni) and non-essential (Cadmium, Cd; Lead, Pb) trace metals reduced significantly the cell number, chlorophyll a content, and also significantly increased the de-epoxidation ratio (DR) as a stress response when compared to the single toxicity of As V. Arsenic, as one of the ubiquitous trace metal and an active industrial effluent is reported to have an increased bio-concentration factor when in mixture with other trace metals in this study. In the combined exposure, the concentration of total As bio-accumulated by D. lutheri was higher than in the single exposure. Hence, polluted areas with the prevalence of multiple contaminants along with the highly toxic trace metals like As can impose a greater risk to the exposed organisms that may get further bio-magnified in the food chain. Our study highlights the consequences and the response of D. lutheri in terms of contamination from single and multiple trace metals in order to obtain a safer biomass production for the growing need of natural derivatives.

Trends and environmental factors of arsenic in sediments from the five lake ecoregions, China

The behavior and risk of arsenic (As) closely relate to its geochemical fractionation and environmental factors in sediments. The soluble (F1), reducible (F2), oxidizable (F3), and residual fraction (F4) of As were extracted in the sediments from Lake Hulun, Wuliangsuhai, and Dalinor of Inner Mongolia Plateau. Coupled with lakes from Eastern and Northeast Plain, Yunnan-Guizhou and Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the responses of As fractions to environmental conditions were investigated according to the spatial distribution of As fractionations in five lake ecoregions at a national scale of China. Generally, F1 was more sensitive to environmental changes, and the pH presented significantly negative effects on the amount of soluble As, while water depth played an important role in regulating the distribution of the fraction F2 and F4. The As pools in surface lake sediments presented a latitudinal zonation due to the gradient effects of climate and anthropogenic activities on nutrient decomposition, and their influence on the capacity of sediments holding As. This work indicated that nutrients played a coordinating role in regulating the impacts of climate and environmental factors on As fractionation in aquatic environments.

Profiling of the spatiotemporal distribution, risks, and prioritization of antibiotics in the waters of Laizhou Bay, northern China

We investigated the spatiotemporal distributions, risks, and prioritization of 15 widely used antibiotics in Laizhou Bay (LZB). Water samples (145) were collected from LZB and its estuaries and analyzed. Twelve antibiotics, with total concentrations of 241-1450 and 69-289 ng L^-1 in estuarine water and seawater, respectively, were detected, with the contributions of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and amoxicillin exceeding 70%. Amoxicillin was firstly determined, which contributed to 20% and 46% of the total antibiotics during summer and spring, respectively. Higher antibiotic concentrations were observed in the sea located adjacent to aquaculture bases and the Yellow River Estuary, which are significantly influenced by mariculture and riverine inputs, respectively. Veterinary antibiotics showed higher total concentrations in summer compared to spring, indicating a higher degree of their usage in mariculture in summer. The antibiotic mixtures posed high risk to algae and low to medium risks to crustaceans and fish. Amoxicillin and norfloxacin were identified as high-risk pollutants. Additionally, amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin showed medium to high resistance development risks. Previous studies on antibiotics in the LZB did not determined amoxicillin and thus underestimated antibiotic contamination, ecological risk, and resistance development risk. Amoxicillin, norfloxacin, and ciprofloxacin should be prioritized in risk management.

Behaviour and distribution of arsenic in seawater and suspended particulate matter in the adjacent area of the Changjiang Estuary during summer and autumn

Water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) were collected from the Changjiang Estuary and its adjacent areas during summer (July) and autumn (October) to study the distributions and partitioning of arsenic. The dissolved arsenic (DAs) and particulate arsenic (PAs) concentration distributions were strongly affected by inputs from riverine discharge and water masses in the East China Sea, generally exhibiting a decreasing trend from inshore to offshore. The DAs concentration was higher in the surface water due to the influence of seawater stratification in summer, but it was not obvious in autumn. DAs and PAs concentrations in the estuary were significantly higher in autumn than in summer. Seasonal variations in arsenic were due to seasonal differences in riverine input (mainly the Changjiang River) and the intrusion of water masses. PAs showed a positive correlation with both SPM and turbidity. The highest PAs concentration was observed in the northern Changjiang Estuary affected by the YSCC, with higher turbidity during autumn. The higher concentration of PAs in autumn was affected by the high SPM input and resuspension of sediment. The water-particulate distribution coefficient of As in summer showed an increasing tendency with salinity, which might be caused by the decrease in the diameter of suspended particles in the open sea.

Toxicity mechanisms of arsenic compounds in aquatic organisms

Arsenic is a toxic metalloid that is widely distributed in the environment due to its persistence and accumulative properties. The occurrence, distribution, and biological effects of arsenic in aquatic environments have been extensively studied. Acute and chronic toxicities to arsenic are associated with fatal effects at the individual and molecular levels. The toxicity of arsenic in aquatic organisms depends on its speciation and concentration. In aquatic environments, inorganic arsenic is the dominant form. While trivalent arsenicals have greater toxicity compared with pentavalent arsenicals, inorganic arsenic can assume a variety of forms through biotransformation in aquatic organisms. Biotransformation mechanisms and speciation of arsenic have been studied, but few reports have addressed the relationships among speciation, toxicity, and bioavailability in biological systems. This paper reviews the modes of action of arsenic along with its toxic effects and distribution in an attempt to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of arsenic toxicity in aquatic organisms.

Distribution, sources, and ecological risks of potentially toxic elements in the Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea: Under the long-term impact of the Yellow River input

Potentially toxic element (PTE) contamination is a common environmental issue in offshore regions worldwide. Water and sediment samples were collected from the Yellow River downstream and adjacent Laizhou Bay to investigate the residues, sources, and ecological risks of 11 typical PTEs (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, V, and Zn). The results indicated that the concentrations of PTEs in the sediments decreased from the Yellow River Estuary to the inner Laizhou Bay under the long-term effect of the Yellow River input. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified three potential sources: natural origins, coastal anthropogenic activities (e.g., oil exploration and steel refining), and marine production (e.g., marine aquaculture and transportation). Among the PTEs, Cd was the most significant contaminant, with a contamination factor (CF) of 2.06 ± 0.78. Furthermore, Cd was the most sensitive factor used in evaluating the overall ecological risk using Monte Carlo analysis, with a contribution of up to 96%. Although the overall contamination and risk levels were low in the bay, a higher pollution load index (PLI) and risk index (RI) adjacent to the Yellow River Estuary indicated that the Yellow River remained the primary contributor to the PTEs contamination in the bay.

Factors influencing the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in coastal sediments: From source to sink

Microplastic (MP) pollution is attracting growing global attention, but little is known about the factors influencing MP occurrence and distributions in marine sediments. Here, MPs were sampled from the sediments of two semi-enclosed bays (Jinghai Bay and Laizhou Bay) and two coastal open zones (Lancelet Reserve and Solen grandis Reserve) in China. The order of MP abundance was Jinghai Bay > Laizhou Bay > Lancelet Reserve > Solen grandis Reserve. Average MP diversity indices for Laizhou Bay (1.84 ± 0.18), Lancelet Reserve (1.59 ± 0.43), S. grandis Reserve (1.58 ± 0.89), and Jinghai Bay (1.43 ± 0.14) revealed Laizhou Bay had the most complicated MP sources. A significant negative correlation between MP abundance and sediment grain size occurred in the semi-enclosed coastal zones (p = 0.004, r = -0.618) rather than in the open coastal zones (p = 0.051, r = -0.480), indicating small sediment particles can strongly enhance MP accumulation in semi-enclosed costal sediments. Although anthropogenic activities influence the MP distribution at source, the composition of regional and local sediments might impact MP occurrence in semi-enclosed coastal zones from the sink. These results help to improve our understanding of the fate and inventory of MPs in coastal sediments.

Arsenic speciation and biotransformation pathways in the aquatic ecosystem: The significance of algae

The contamination of aquatic systems with arsenic (As) is considered to be an internationally-important health and environmental issue, affecting over 115 countries globally. Arsenic contamination of aquatic ecosystems is a global threat as it can enter the food chain from As-rich water and cause harmful impacts on the humans and other living organisms. Although different factors (e.g., pH, redox potential, iron/manganese oxides, and microbes) control As biogeochemical cycling and speciation in water systems, the significance of algal species in biotransformation of As is poorly understood. The overarching attribute of this review is to briefly elaborate various As sources and its distribution in water bodies and factors affecting As biogeochemical behavior in aqueous ecosystems. This review elucidates the intriguing role of algae in biotransformation/volatilization of As in water bodies under environmentally-relevant conditions. Also, we critically delineate As sorption, uptake, oxidation and reduction pathways of As by algae and their possible role in bioremediation of As-contaminated water (e.g., drinking water, wastewater). The current review provides the updated and useful framework for government and water treatment agencies to implement algae in As remediation programs globally.
