Coupling high frequency monitoring and bioassay experiments to investigate a harmful algal bloom in the Bay of Seine (French-English Channel)

Influence of nutrient enrichment on colonisation and photosynthetic parameters of hard substrate marine microphytobenthos

This study aimed to assess the influence of nutrient enrichment on the development of microalgal biofilm on concrete and PVC cubes. Three mesocosms were utilized to create a nutrient gradient over a period of 28 days. Various parameters including biomass, photosynthetic activity, microtopography, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were measured. Imaging PAM techniques were employed to obtain surface-wide data. Results revealed that nutrient availability had no significant impact on Chl a biomass and the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (F v /F m ). The photosynthetic capacity and efficiency were minimally affected by nutrient availability. Interestingly, the relationship between microphytobenthic (MPB) biomass and photosynthesis and surface rugosity exhibited distinct patterns. Negative reliefs showed a strong correlation with F v /F m , while no clear pattern emerged for biomass on rough concrete structures. Overall, our findings demonstrate that under conditions of heightened eutrophication, biofilm photosynthesis thrives in the fissures and crevasses of colonized structures regardless of nutrient levels. This investigation provides valuable insights into the interplay between nutrient availability and surface rugosity.

Toxic Algal Bloom Recurrence in the Era of Global Change: Lessons from the Chilean Patagonian Fjords

Toxic and harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a global problem affecting human health, marine ecosystems, and coastal economies, the latter through their impact on aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism. As our knowledge and the techniques to study HABs advance, so do international monitoring efforts, which have led to a large increase in the total number of reported cases. However, in addition to increased detections, environmental factors associated with global change, mainly high nutrient levels and warming temperatures, are responsible for the increased occurrence, persistence, and geographical expansion of HABs. The Chilean Patagonian fjords provide an "open-air laboratory" for the study of climate change, including its impact on the blooms of several toxic microalgal species, which, in recent years, have undergone increases in their geographical range as well as their virulence and recurrence (the species Alexandrium catenella, Pseudochattonella verruculosa, and Heterosigma akashiwo, and others of the genera Dinophysis and Pseudo-nitzschia). Here, we review the evolution of HABs in the Chilean Patagonian fjords, with a focus on the established connections between key features of HABs (expansion, recurrence, and persistence) and their interaction with current and predicted global climate-change-related factors. We conclude that large-scale climatic anomalies such as the lack of rain and heat waves, events intensified by climate change, promote the massive proliferation of these species by creating ideal conditions for their growth and persistence, as they affect water-column stratification, nutrient inputs, and reproductive rates.

Assessing indicators of arsenic toxicity using variable fluorescence in a commercially valuable microalgae: Physiological and toxicological aspects

Indicators signaling Arsenic (As) stress through physiology of microalgae using non-destructive methods like variable fluorescence are rare but requisite. This study reports stress markers indicating arsenic (As) toxicity (in two concentrations 11.25 µg/L and 22.5 µg/L compared to a control) exposed to a microalga (Diacronema lutheri), using fast repetition rate fluorometry (FRRf). Growth and physiological parameters such as cell density, chl a and the maximum quantum yield F_v/F_m showed coherence and impeded after the exponential phase (day 9 - day 12) in As treatments compared to the control (p < 0.05). On contrary photo-physiological constants were elevated showing higher optical (a_LHII) and functional [Sigma (σ_PSII)] absorption cross-section for the As treatments (p < 0.05) further implying the lack of biomass production yet an increase in light absorption. In addition, As exposure increased the energy dissipation by heat (NPQ-NSV) showing a strong relationship with the de-epoxidation ratio (DR) involving photoprotective pigments. Total As bioaccumulation by D. lutheri showed a strong affinity with Fe adsorption throughout the algal growth curve. This study suggests some prompt photo-physiological proxies signaling As contamination and endorsing its usefulness in risk assessments, given the high toxicity and ubiquitous presence of As in the ecosystem.

Colimitation assessment of phytoplankton growth using a resource use efficiency approach in the Bay of Seine (French-English Channel)

Eutrophication and dystrophy are two of the main problems affecting coastal ecosystems. In the Bay of Seine, phosphorus (P) inputs from the Seine estuary have been largely reduced in the last decade, in contrast to nitrogen (N), which leads to high N/P ratio inputs. To study the effect of dystrophy, an enrichment bioassay using water sampled from the Bay of Seine was repeated 19 times over a period of 18 months with six different enrichments. After a few days, chlorophyll a (chl a), alkaline phosphatase activity (APA), transparent exopolymeric particles (TEPs), cytometric size structure, and maximum quantum yield of photosystem II were measured. The data provide strong evidence for an N & P colimitation system in the vast majority of the incubations, as only the N + P and N + P + Si enrichments supported phytoplankton growth, and Si only appeared to play a secondary role in our incubations. A N/P ratio of 16 equal to the Redfield ratio was identified as the optimum for balanced growth, as chl a was the highest and TEP and APA production was the lowest at this ratio. To fit the requirements of the colimited system, a new resource use efficiency (RUE_NP) calculation was developed to account for N and P colimitation instead of only one nutrient, as is usually the case. This calculation allows better representation of RUE in dystrophic conditions, as found in many highly anthropized ecosystems. The relationships between RUE_NP and the size structure of the phytoplankton community were explored, and a significant positive correlation between RUE_NP and larger cells (>2 μm) and a negative correlation with smaller cells (<2 μm) were noted, showing a better use of nutrients by larger cells. This study highlights an increase of RUE_NP with the phytoplankton cell size in a colimited system.
