A first assessment of marine meso-litter and microplastics on beaches: Where does Mauritius stand?

New insights into the migration, distribution and accumulation of micro-plastic in marine environment: A critical mechanism review

Microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed in the marine environment, posing a significant threat to marine biota. The contribution of anthropogenic and terrestrial sources to the aquatic ecosystem has led to an increase in MPs findings, and their abundance in aquatic biota has been reported to be of concern. MPs are formed mainly via photo degradation of macroplastics (large plastic debris), and their release into the environment is a result of the degradation of additives. Eco-toxicological risks are increasing for marine organisms, due to the ingestion of MPs, which cause damage to gastrointestinal (GI) tracts and stomach. Plastics with a size <5 mm are considered MPs, and they are commonly identified by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Laser direct infrared (LDIR). The size, density and additives are the main factors influencing the abundance and bioavailability of MPs. The most abundant type of MPs found in fishes are fiber, polystyrenes, and fragments. These microscale pellets cause physiological stress and growth deformities by targeting the GI tracts of fishes and other biota. Approximately 80% MPs come from terrestrial sources, either primary, generated during different products such as skin care products, tires production and the use of MPs as carrier for pharmaceutical products, or secondary plastics, disposed of near coastal areas and water bodies. The issue of MPs and their potential effects on the marine ecosystem require proper attention. Therefore, this study conducted an extensive literature review on assessing MPs levels in fishes, sediments, seawater, their sources, and effects on marine biota (especially on fishes), chemo-physical behavior and the techniques used for their identification.

A global snapshot of microplastic contamination in sediments and biota of marine protected areas

Microplastics (MPs) become ubiquitous contaminants in Marine Protected Areas (MPA) that have been planned as a conservation strategy. The present study provides a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, abundance, and distribution of MPs potentially affecting MPA worldwide. Data on MP occurrence and levels in sediment and biota samples were collected from recent peer-reviewed literature and screened using a GIS-based approach overlapping MP records with MPA boundaries. MPs were found in 186 MPAs, with levels ranging from 0 to 9187.5 items/kg in sediment and up to 17,461.9 items/kg in organisms. Peaked MPs concentrations occurred within multiple-use areas, and no-take MPAs were also affected. About half of MP levels found within MPA fell into the higher concentration quartiles, suggesting potential impacts on these areas. In general, benthic species were likely more affected than pelagic ones due to the higher concentrations of MP reported in the tissues of benthic species. Alarmingly, MPs were found in tissues of two threatened species on the IUCN Red List. The findings denote urgent concerns about the effectiveness of the global system of protected areas and their proposed conservation goals.

Are tropical mangroves a sink for litter leaking from land-and sea-based sources? Evidence from selected Kenyan mangroves

Marine litter surveys were carried out to determine the role of mangroves as a sink for litter. General litter density in the mangroves was 0.088 ± 0.076 items m^-2, composed mainly of plastic (85.9 %). Higher litter densities occurred in the middle (0.162 ± 0.150 items m^-2) compared to the landward (0.066 ± 0.049 items m^-2) and the seaward zones (0.036 ± 0.028 items m^-2), indicating the important role played by the middle zone in providing a sink for litter from both land and sea-based sources. Landward zones were a sink for heavier litter from land that could easily be trapped by mangrove roots (plastic and clothing). The middle zones retained mainly the litter that are not easily trapped by the mangroves' roots in seaward and landward zones, particularly soft plastics. The seaward zones acted as a sink for litter from sea-based sources mainly marine and fishing gears, and materials used for fishing and boat repairs.

Hidden problems in geological heritage sites: The microplastic issue on Saint Mary's Island, India, Southeast Arabian Sea

Microplastics (MPs) have become a dominant constituent of several oceanic islands. This study focuses on the occurrence and distribution of MPs present in the beach sediments of Saint Mary's Island (SMI), a geological heritage site located in the south-eastern part of the Arabian Sea. The average (standard deviation) abundance of MPs on this island was 97.18 (80.49) particles/kg. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that MPs are composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyamide (PA). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) highlighted the presence of Cr, As, Pb, and Cd (harmful pollutants) on MP surfaces. The MPs in the SMI are largely contributed by the nearby fishing harbour, touristic beaches and estuaries. The results of this study, act as a starting point for continuous environmental monitoring in this unique region of the world.

A review on marine plastisphere: biodiversity, formation, and role in degradation

The pollution of plastic waste has become an increasingly serious environmental crisis. Recently, plastic has been detected in various kinds of environments, even in human tissues, which is an increasing threat to the ecosystems and humans. In the ocean, the plastic waste is eventually fragmentized into microplastics (MPs) under the disruption of physical and chemical processes. MPs are colonized by microbial communities such as fungi, diatoms, and bacteria, which form biofilms on the surface of the plastic called “plastisphere”. In this review, we summarize the studies related to microorganisms in the plastisphere in recent years and describe the microbial species in the plastisphere, mainly including bacteria, fungi, and autotrophs. Secondly, we explore the interactions between MPs and the plastisphere. The depth of MPs in the ocean and the nutrients in the surrounding seawater can have a great impact on the community structure of microorganisms in the plastisphere. Finally, we discuss the types of MP-degrading bacteria in the ocean, and use the “seed bank” theory to speculate on the potential sources of MP-degrading microorganisms. Challenges and future research prospects are also discussed.
