Environmental effects from petroleum product transportation spillage in Nigeria: a critical review

Nigeria has struggled to meet sustainable development goals (SDGs) on environmental sustainability, transportation, and petroleum product distribution for decades, endangering human and ecological health. Petroleum product spills contaminate soil, water, and air, harming humans, aquatic life, and biodiversity. The oil and gas industry contributes to environmental sustainability and scientific and technological advancement through its supply chain activities in the transport and logistics sectors. This paper reviewed the effects of petroleum product transportation at three accident hotspots on Nigeria highway, where traffic and accident records are alarming due to the road axis connecting the southern and northern regions of the country. The preliminary data was statistically analysed to optimise the review process and reduce risk factors through ongoing data monitoring. Studies on Nigeria's petroleum product transportation spills and environmental impacts between the years 2013 and 2023 were critically analysed to generate updated information. The searches include Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Five hundred and forty peer-reviewed studies were analysed, and recommendations were established through the conclusions. The findings show that petroleum product transport causes heavy metal deposition in the environment as heavy metals damage aquatic life and build up in the food chain, posing a health risk to humans. The study revealed that petroleum product spills have far-reaching environmental repercussions and, therefore, recommended that petroleum product spills must be mitigated immediately. Furthermore, the study revealed that better spill response and stricter legislation are needed to reduce spills, while remediation is necessary to lessen the effects of spills on environmental and human health.

Fate and transport of strontium in groundwater from a layered sedimentary aquifer system

In this article, strontium distribution in sedimentary coastal aquifers of Eastern India was studied and its association with groundwater particles has been ascertained using hydrochemical and morphological tools. Groundwater contains Sr²⁺ in the range of 0.08-4.0 mg/L with higher concentrations in Cretaceous formation. The particle number in groundwater varies from 4.5 × 10⁵ to 3.3 × 10⁶ per liter and follows the power law distribution with respect to the particle diameter. The calculated β values (2.54 and 4.03) signify the abundance of smaller particles over larger ones. The particle concentration of size range 0.45-8 μm is found to be 0.64-2.6 mg/L. Elemental data of groundwater particles clearly suggest their origin from the host rock minerals. Zeta potential data indicates diverse nature of colloids suggesting prevalence of both positive and negative charged species in the groundwater. The hydrochemical interpretation along with speciation studies infers that high Sr²⁺ in groundwater is a result of incongruent dissolution of carbonate minerals and the dissolved Sr²⁺ partitions into both dissociated and un-dissociated forms. Based on the Sr²⁺/Ca²⁺ ratio and mineral saturation indices, it can be inferred that the Sr²⁺ is preferentially associated with colloids over large particles and the migration takes place through sorption of Sr²⁺ onto clay-bound (extrinsic) colloids in groundwater. This study describes the mechanism of strontium release into groundwater and provides insights into the role of groundwater particles in controlling the strontium migration to deep aquifers.

Influencing factors and mechanism by which DOM in groundwater releases Fe from sediment

The groundwater in many aquifers contains elevated concentrations of iron (Fe). Although much of this Fe is from its release from water-bearing sediments under natural environmental conditions, sufficient evidence is lacking to clarify whether anthropogenic pollutants, such as dissolved organic matter (DOM), can increase this natural release. In this time series and comparative analysis study, an Fe increasing effect was verified through laboratory leaching tests. The influences of the aqueous environmental conditions, such as pH, were also investigated. DOM can promote the release of Fe from sediments and increase the concentration of Fe in groundwater. In addition, lower or higher pH and temperature can enhance the release of Fe to some extent. Higher concentrations of DOM provided a more thorough release of Fe from the sediment; additional ions such as Cu also affected Fe release. It is possible that complexation between DOM and Fe occurs through ligand dissolution and reduction, thus promoting the release of Fe. The findings indicate that DOM imported through anthropogenic activities can increase the release of Fe from aquifer sediments into groundwater, thus worsening Fe pollution in groundwater. This study explored the mechanism by which different types of DOM release Fe from aquifer sediments and investigated the factors that influence this process. The findings provide insights into the geochemical processes of Fe in the groundwater.
