Mugilidae fish as bioindicator for monitoring plastic pollution: Comparison between a commercial port and a fishpond (north-western Mediterranean Sea)

Interactions between microplastics and insects in terrestrial ecosystems-A systematic review and meta-analysis

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial ecosystems has been confirmed worldwide. Due to their widespread distribution and diversity in habitats, insects will readily interact with MPs via various pathways. Although the topic of MP-insect interactions is still in the early stages of research, it is becoming increasingly important. We used a META approach with phylogenetic control and subgroup examination to summarize the evidence from both field and laboratory experiments in quantitative form. The field evidence suggests that insects can take and transfer MPs along food chains via ingestion and adherence. Also, they are active in the bio-fragmentation of MPs and the generation of secondary pollutants. The exposure to MPs impaired key biological traits of insects, mainly their behavior and health, such as reducing climbing ability and increasing oxidative stress. In terms of exposure conditions, the small-sized MPs can induce more severe effects on the insects, while the insect response to MPs was not significantly reliant on exposure times or MP concentrations based on the current evidence available. We propose that insects not only play roles in the redistribution of MPs spatially and in food chains via bio-fragmentation but are also threatened by MPs. Our research deepens our understanding of the environmental risks posed by MPs in insect ecosystems.

Investigating the presence of organophosphate esters in sediments from a typical fishing port agglomeration in Dalian, North China

The presence of 14 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface sediments from a typical fishing port agglomeration in Dalian, North China was investigated for the first time. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO), and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) dominated 12 detectable OPEs (∑OPEs), with concentrations ranging widely from 0.56 to 352 ng/g (dry weight basis). The ∑OPE levels in sediments varied significantly across fishing harbors of various grades, and within the same grade, highlighting uneven distribution of OPE sources and inputs to harbors. The first- and second-class fishing harbors had higher geometric mean of ∑OPE contents compared to center and natural harbors, reflecting higher OPE pollution in these areas. Although there were significant correlations among the OPE congeners with high detection frequencies, the composition patterns of sediment OPEs varied considerably among fishing ports. The sediments in the center and first-class harbors had higher abundance of non-chlorinated OPEs (non-Cl-OPEs), suggesting heterogeneity in source strength and pollution characteristics of Cl- and non-Cl-OPEs in fishing ports. The distribution of OPEs in sediments was weakly associated with sediment organic carbon, but not socioeconomic variables, indicating complex controlling factors of their distributions in port sediments. The ecological risks of sediment OPEs were evaluated, and while OPE accumulations ranged broadly (7-684 ng/cm2), exposure hazards were negligible. The sediments in first- and second-class fishing harbors, which had greater OPE accumulation, were identified as reservoirs of OPEs in port aquatic environments.

Investigation of microplastic ingestion in commercial fish from Surabaya river, Indonesia

Microplastics (MPs) were recognized as emerging environmental contaminants and ubiquitously distributed in aquatic environments, including in commercial biota. Fish are estimated as one of the most susceptible aquatic biota to ingesting microplastic (MP). Commercial fish cultivation is commonly developed in urban rivers. This situation may lead to food web safety and human health risks because most fish products are commercially available for consumption. Surabaya River, one of the main rivers in Indonesia, has been polluted by MPs. This river takes essential parts for providing clean water for Surabaya City and fishery. This study aimed to investigate: (1) MP ingestion, abundance, characteristics in commercial fish species in Surabaya River, and (2) potential influencing factors to MP ingestion in the fish. The MP ingestion was found in gills and gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of seven commercial fish species from the Surabaya River. The highest MP abundance was found in the gill of Trichopodus trichopterus (280.73 ± 162.25 particles/g WW), in the GIT of Rasbora argyrotaenia (358.75 ± 121.98 particles/g WW), and in Notopterus notopterus (186 ± 130.81 particles/individual). The MP abundance was positively correlated to fish body size. The predominant MP polymer in both fish organs was cellophane. These MPs were mostly fiber-shaped, large-sized, and black-colored. The MP ingestion in the fish might be influenced by active/passive uptake routes, specific feeding habits, preference habitats, fish size, and MP characteristics. This investigation reveals the occurrence of MP ingestion in commercial fish, which is closely associated with human health risks via trophic transfer by accidental consumption.
