Theoretical estimation of the thermal damages of living tissues caused by laser irradiation in tumor thermal therapy

This article aims to provide theoretical predictions for the thermal reactions of human tissues during tumor thermotherapy when exposed to laser irradiation and an external heat source. For the construction of a theoretical study of bioheat transfer, the selection of a suitable thermal model capable of accurately predicting the required thermal responses is essential. The effect of heat production by heat treatment on a spherical multilayer tumor tissue is evaluated using this approach. Analytical solution for the non-homogenous differential equations is derived in the Laplace domain. The study examines the impact of thermal relaxation time on tissue temperature and the subsequent thermal damage. The numerical findings of thermal damage and temperatures are depicted in a graphical representation. This model explains laser treatment, physical events, metabolic support, and blood perfusion. The numerical outcomes of the recommended model are validated by comparing them to the literatures.

Commentary on the clinical and preclinical dosage limits of interstitially administered magnetic fluids for therapeutic hyperthermia based on current practice and efficacy models

We offer a critique of what constitutes a suitable dosage limit, in both clinical and preclinical studies, for interstitially administered magnetic nanoparticles in order to enable therapeutic hyperthermia under the action of an externally applied alternating magnetic field. We approach this first from the perspective of the currently approved clinical dosages of magnetic nanoparticles in the fields of MRI contrast enhancement, sentinel node detection, iron replacement therapy and magnetic thermoablation. We compare this to a simple analytical model of the achievable hyperthermia temperature rise in both humans and animals based on the interstitially administered dose, the heating and dispersion characteristics of the injected fluid, and the strength and frequency of the applied magnetic field. We show that under appropriately chosen conditions a therapeutic temperature rise is achievable in clinically relevant situations. We also show that in such cases it may paradoxically be harder to achieve the same therapeutic temperature rise in a preclinical model. We comment on the implications for the evidence-based translation of hyperthermia based interventions from the laboratory to the clinic.

Quantifying the efficacy of first aid treatments for burn injuries using mathematical modelling and in vivo porcine experiments

First aid treatment of burns reduces scarring and improves healing. We quantify the efficacy of first aid treatments using a mathematical model to describe data from a series of in vivo porcine experiments. We study burn injuries that are subject to various first aid treatments. The treatments vary in the temperature and duration. Calibrating the mathematical model to the experimental data provides estimates of the thermal diffusivity, the rate at which thermal energy is lost to the blood, and the heat transfer coefficient controlling the loss of thermal energy at the interface of the fat and muscle. A limitation of working with in vivo experiments is the difficulty of measuring variations in temperature across the tissue layers. This limitation motivates us to use a simple, single layer mathematical model. Using the solution of the calibrated mathematical model we visualise the temperature distribution across the thickness of the tissue. With this information we propose a novel measure of the potential for tissue damage. This measure quantifies two important factors: (i) the volume of tissue that rises above the threshold temperature associated with the accumulation of tissue damage; and (ii) the duration of time that the tissue remains above this threshold temperature.

EXACT ANALYTICAL SOLUTION OF BIOHEAT EQUATION SUBJECTED TO INTENSIVE MOVING HEAT SOURCE

Presented is the analytical solution of Pennes bio-heat equation, under localized moving heat source. The thermal behavior of one-dimensional (1D) nonhomogeneous layer of biological tissue is considered with blood perfusion term and modeled under the effect of concentric moving line heat source. The procedure of the solution is Eigen function expansion. The temperature profiles are calculated for three tissues of liver, kidney, and skin. Behavior of temperature profiles are studied parametrically due to the different moving speeds. The analytical solution can be used as a verification branch for studying the practical operations such as scanning laser treatment and other numerical solutions.

SEMI-ANALYTICAL SOLUTION OF BIO-HEAT CONDUCTION FOR MULTI-LAYERS SKIN SUBJECTED TO LASER HEATING AND FLUID COOLING

A semi-analytical solution of bio-heat conduction on the three-layer skin is presented. The performance of the typical heat treatment (heating by laser and cooling by fluid at skin surface) is studied. The transient temperature field and thermal damage of skin are investigated. Effects of several parameters on temperature variation and thermal damage are discussed. The results of the paper will be useful for heat therapy in clinics. In addition, the presented result is very consistent to that by the finite element method. The semi-analytical method can be easily applied for solving the general problem of heat conduction in any multilayer structure.
