Abstract
Bi2O2CO3(BOC)/Bi4O5Br2(BOB)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) Z-scheme heterojunction with promising photocatalytic properties was synthesized via a facile one-pot room-temperature method. Ultra-thin nanosheets of BOC and BOB were grown in situ on rGO. The formed 2D/2D direct Z-scheme heterojunction of BOC/BOB with oxygen vacancies (OVs) effectively leads to lower negative electron reduction potential of BOB as well as higher positive hole oxidation potential of BOC, showing improved reduction/oxidation ability. Particularly, rGO is an acceptor of the electrons from the conduction band of BOC. Its dual roles significantly improve the transfer performance of photo-induced charge carriers and accelerate their separation. With layered nanosheet structure, rich OVs, high specific surface area, and increased utilization efficiency of visible light, the multiple synergistic effects of BOC/BOB/rGO can achieve effective generation and separation of the electron-holes, thereby generating more •O2- and h+. The photocatalytic reduction efficiency of CO2 to CO (12.91 µmol/(g·hr)) is three times higher than that of BOC (4.18 µmol/(g·hr)). Moreover, it also achieved almost 100% removal of Rhodamine B and cyanobacterial cells within 2 hours.

Abstract
In this work, the Br functional group on the ligand UiO-66-Br was modified with a Bi-O bond through the secondary solvothermal method, and the synthesis method of visible light catalyst UB (UiO-66-BiOBr) with high electron mobility was explored. The findings indicate that the effective charge transfer of the functional group-modified material UB is 2.98 times and 1.22 times that of BiOBr and traditional UiO-66/BiOBr heterojunctions, respectively. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the removal rate of tetracycline can reach 88.71%, and the photocatalytic performance is 22.73 times higher than that of UiO-66-Br. Moreover, it maintains good adsorption and photocatalytic performance under different laboratory and actual engineering water environment conditions. In the complex water environment of municipal wastewater, the degradation effect reaches more than 80%. Finally, the decomposition pathways of TC and ecotoxicities of the intermediates were analyzed via combining theoretical calculation, LC-MS/MS, and T.E.S.T.

Abstract
It is well known that both of the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and the response capability to visible light remarkably affect the photocatalytic performance. In the present work, a 3D microsphere of Bi5O7I/BiOCl heterojunction catalyst was synthetised. The synergy of Bi5O7I and BiOCl not only significantly enhances the transfer rate and separation efficiency of carriers, but also heightens light absorption capacity. As-prepared Bi5O7I/BiOCl (40 wt% BiOCl) has a higher degradation efficiency on doxycycline hydrochloride (DC) (90 min, 83.0%) and super high inhibition rate (90 min, 99.92%) on Escherichia coli under visible light, compared to the two monomers. Pollutants DC is finally decomposed into CO2, H2O and small molecule intermediates by generated h+, •OH and •O2-. The effects of reactive radicals follow the order of •OH radicals > h+ radicals ≫ •O2- and e- radicals. The possible structures of intermediates and four possible degradation pathways involved were also discussed. In addition, As-synthetised Bi5O7I/BiOCl has preferable reusability and excellent chemical stability. Biological toxicity experiments also verify that Bi5O7I/BiOCl is a green and environmentally friendly composite material. This strategy provides a green, low-toxic way for the application of traditional type II heterojunction in the fields of environmental remediation and photocatalysis.

Abstract
Bi5O7I belongs to the family of bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I), having a unique layered structure with an internal electrostatic field that promotes the separation and transfer of photo-generated charge carriers. Interestingly, Bi5O7I exhibits higher thermal stability compared to its other BiOX member compounds and absorption spectrum extended to the visible region. Bi5O7I has demonstrated applications in diverse fields such as photocatalytic degradation of various organic pollutants, marine antifouling, etc. Unfortunately, owing to its wide band gap of ∼2.9 eV, its absorption lies mainly in the ultraviolet region, and a tiny portion of absorption lies in the visible region. Due to limited absorption, the photocatalytic performance of pure Bi5O7I is still facing challenges. In order to reduce the band gap and increase the light absorption capability of Bi5O7I, doping and formation of heterostructure strategies have been employed, which showed promising results in the photocatalytic performance. In addition, the plasmonic heterostructures of Bi5O7I were also developed to further boost the efficiency of Bi5O7I as a photocatalyst. Here, in this review article, we present such recent efforts made for the advanced development of Bi5O7I regarding its synthesis, properties and applications. The strategies for photocatalytic performance enhancement have been discussed in detail. Moreover, in the conclusion section, we have presented the current challenges and discussed possible prospective developments in this field.

Abstract
Various kind of organics are toxic and detrimental, resulting in eutrophication, black, odorous water and so on. Photocatalysis has been deemed to be a promising technology which can decompose different kinds of organic pollutants under visible light irradiation, finally achieving non-poisonous, harmless CO2, water and other inorganic materials. Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) is considered as a promising photocatalyst for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants due to its high chemical stability, unique layered structure, resistance to corrosion and favorable photocatalytic property. However, BiOCl can only absorb UV irradiation because of its wide band gap of 3.2 eV-3.5 eV that limits its photocatalytic performance. Herein, a lot of methods have been reviewed to improve its photocatalytic activity. We introduced the unique and special layered structure of BiOCl, the typical and common synthesis methods that can control the morphology, and the most important part is varies of modification routes of BiOCl and the application of BiOCl-based materials for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Besides, we summarized the crucial issues and perspectives about the application of BiOCl in pollution management.

Abstract
To bridge the gap between the cleanliness of a freshly cleaved surface of 2D BiOI and that available from a purely chemical-etching means, we subjected single-crystal BiOI to a series of surface treatments and quantified the resulting chemical states and electronic properties. Vapor transport syntheses included both physical vapor transport from single-source BiOI, as well as chemical vapor transport from Bi2O3 + BiI3 and from Bi + I2 + Bi2O3. Surface treatments included tape cleaving, rinsing in water, sonication in acetone, an aqueous HF etch, and a sequential HF etch with subsequent sonication in acetone. X-ray diffraction, XRD, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS, probed the resulting bulk crystalline species and interfacial chemical states, respectively. In comparison with overlayer models of idealized oxide-terminated or iodide-terminated BiOI, angle-resolved XPS elucidated surface terminations as a function of each treatment. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, UPS, established work-function, and Fermi-level energies for each treatment. Data reveal that HF etching yields interfacial BiI3 at BiOI steps that is subsequently removed with acetone sonication. UPS establishes n-type behavior for the vapor-transport-synthesized BiOI, and surface work function and Fermi level shifts for each chemical treatment under study. We discuss the implications for processing BiOI nanofilms for energy-conversion applications.

Abstract
BiOI is a visible photocatalyst towards organic pollutant. In this work, biomass waste (withered typha grass) was used to fabricate nitrogen-doped hierarchical carbon (NHC) by an one-step carbonization route. Then NHC provided a good carrier to load the BiOI semiconductor materials by a green simple co-precipitation method, after adding NaOH solution, the irregular microspheres BiOI/NHC was gradually etched by OH- to form the tremella-like Bi4O5I2/NHC. The well-defined tremella-like Bi4O5I2/NHC invested adequate interface and high particular surface range (SBET: 66 m2 g-1), which is higher than pure BiOI (22 m2 g-1) and Bi4O5I2 (17 m2 g-1). Multiple synergistic effects, such as high SBET can give more dynamic destinations, the special tremella-like structure can assimilate more reflected occurrence light of other nanosheets, low I content can increase the conduction/valence band gap of semiconductor materials and NHC can act as an electron acceptor, making as-prepared Bi4O5I2/NHC composite ideal candidates for photocatalysis. The degradation rate of Bi4O5I2/NHC reaches up to 87.4% of methyl orange in 2 h, which is about 2 times higher than BiOI and Bi4O5I2. Therefore, this work gives a technique to link NHC derived from biomass waste to Bi4O5I2 with highly-efficiency photocatalytic performance.

Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity of Magnetic BiOBr/SrFe 12O 19 Nanosheets. NANOMATERIALS 2019; 9:nano9050735. Abstract
Magnetic BiOBr/SrFe12O19 nanosheets were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and UV-visible diffused reflectance spectra (UV-DRS), and the magnetic properties were tested using a vibration sample magnetometer (VSM). The as-produced composite with an irregular flaky-shaped aggregate possesses a good anti-demagnetization ability (Hc = 861.04 G) and a high photocatalytic efficiency. Under visible light (λ > 420 nm) and UV light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation, the photodegradation rates of Rhodamine B (RhB) using BiOBr/SrFe12O19 (5 wt %) (BOB/SFO-5) after 30 min of reaction were 97% and 98%, respectively, which were higher than that using BiOBr (87%). The degradation rate of RhB using the recovered BiOBr/5 wt % SrFe12O19 (marked as BOB/SFO-5) was still more than 85% in the fifth cycle, indicating the high stability of the composite catalyst. Meanwhile, after five cycles, the magnetic properties were still as stable as before. The radical-capture experiments proved that superoxide radicals and holes were main active species in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB.

Abstract
We have developed a simple and green solution for the synthesis of catalytic gold-doped bismuth oxyiodide (Au/BiOI) nanocomposites at room temperature from an aqueous mixture of gold ions, bismuth ions, and iodide ions. Au nanoparticles (NPs) were formed in situ and doped into BiOI nanosheets. The oxygen vacancies generated in BiOI give rise to its oxidase-like activity, and Au doping facilitated the reaction leading to a 4-fold higher oxidase-like activity of the Au/BiOI nanocomposite. The Au/BiOI nanocomposites showed wide spectrum antimicrobial activity not only against non-multidrug-resistant E. coli, K. pneumoniae, S. enteritidis, S. aureus, and B. subtilis bacteria, but also against multidrug-resistant bacteria, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The gold doping reduced the minimal inhibitory concentration value by ∼2000-fold for the Au/BiOI nanocomposite, in comparison with only BiOI nanoparticles. The bactericidal property of the Au/BiOI nanocomposite arose from the combined effect of the disruption of the bacterial membrane through a strong interaction of the nanocomposite with the bacteria and the generation of reactive oxygen species. Also, the Au/BiOI nanocomposite is highly biocompatible, which has been demonstrated in vitro by analysis of cytotoxicity and hemolysis, and in vivo by evaluating ocular tissue responses. Furthermore, intrastromal administration of Au/BiOI nanocomposites can effectively alleviate S. aureus-induced bacterial keratitis in rabbits, suggesting a significant disinfectant benefit in preclinical studies. The Au/BiOI nanocomposites show great potential for the inactivation of bacterial pathogens in an aqueous environment and treatment of bacterial infection-induced diseases.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the photochemical degradation of trypan blue (TB) and to identify decomposition products. Methods Defined solution samples of TB and a mixture with lutein/zeaxanthin were exposed to blue light. Thermal degradation processes were ruled out using controls not subjected to irradiation. All samples were analyzed using optical microscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Degradation kinetics were determined based on changes in absorbance; intermediates were identified by analyzing mass differences of characteristic fragment ion peaks within the fragmentation patterns, and assignments were verified by NMR. Results TB demonstrated a photochemical degradation, which can be triggered by lutein/zeaxanthin. Intermediates vary depending on the presence of lutein/zeaxanthin. The self-sensitized photodegradation of TB occurs under generation of dimethyl sulfate and presumed formation of phenol. In contrast, within the presence of lutein/zeaxanthin the decomposition of TB indicates the formation of methoxyamine and sulfonyl arin. Thermal degradation processes were not observed. Conclusions TB demonstrated a photodegradation that may be triggered by lutein/zeaxanthin and results in the formation of cytotoxic decomposition products. Our findings contribute to understand degradation mechanisms of TB and may elucidate previous clinical and experimental observations of cellular toxicity after TB application.

Abstract
In this study, Bi7O9I3 photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a simple and rapid microwave irradiation method. The characterization of prepared photocatalysts was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL). The photocatalytic performance was determines by the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under xenon lamp illumination. The Bi7O9I3 catalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic performance and the first-order kinetic rate constant of Bi7O9I3 was about 4.2 times greater than that of BiOI. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was associated with surface morphology, suitable band gap energy and low recombination rate of electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, the photocatalytic efficiency of BPA with Bi7O9I3 was systematically investigated using a three factor, three level Box–Behnken experimental design and response surface methodology (RSM). A quadratic polynomial model was proposed. Experimental and predicted values exhibited a good correlation with a predicted R2 value of 0.9016. A relative significance study of three independent variables showed that catalyst dosage had the most significant positive effect on the degradation of BPA, followed by initial concentration of BPA and pH value. The prepared Bi7O9I3 is a promising photocatalyst for practical application in organic pollutant decomposition. Bi7O9I3 was synthesized via a microwave irradiation method and the influence of different parameters on BPA degradation was investigated using a response surface methodology.![]()

Abstract
Bismuth based semiconductor photocatalysts are being generated as promising materials for photocatalysis. In this work, hydrothermal methods have been utilized to synthesize a bismuth oxyiodide semiconductor with deposited Bi nanodots (Bi-BiOI), which could create oxygen defects and accelerate photoinduced charge migration simultaneously. The resulting Bi-BiOI strongly demonstrates the high photocatalytic performance for bisphenol A and methylene blue degradation under visible light. 86% of BPA was degraded after an irradiation time of 4 hours. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was employed to detect the evolution of intermediates formed during the decomposition process of bisphenol A, and the following results suggested complete bisphenol A mineralization. Additionally, electron paramagnetic resonance results revealed the production of free radicals and the presence of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, a distinctively increased photocurrent response and photoluminescence decay dynamics demonstrate that the interface between the Bi nanodots and BiOI semiconductor promotes the separation and migration of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. The lower valence band value (2.57 eV) of Bi-BiOI presented a higher oxidation potential, thus the production of hydroxyl radicals could be promoted considerably. Based on the experimental results, factors such as oxygen vacancies, effective charge migration, suppressed photoinduced electron-hole pair recombination and a high Bi-BiOI oxidation potential would result in advanced free radical production capacity, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency. The findings of our work will contribute to the fabrication of metal nanodot deposited semiconductor photocatalysts and pave the way for the utilization of advanced oxidation technology.
