Reverse hydrogen spillover during ethanol dehydrogenation on TiO2-supported gold catalysts

Unveiling Highly Sensitive Active Site in Atomically Dispersed Gold Catalysts for Enhanced Ethanol Dehydrogenation

Developing a desirable ethanol dehydrogenation process necessitates a highly efficient and selective catalyst with low cost. Herein, we show that the "complex active site" consisting of atomically dispersed Au atoms with the neighboring oxygen vacancies (Vo) and undercoordinated cation on oxide supports can be prepared and display unique catalytic properties for ethanol dehydrogenation. The "complex active site" Au-Vo-Zr3+ on Au1/ZrO2 exhibits the highest H2 production rate, with above 37,964 mol H2 per mol Au per hour (385 g H2 g Au - 1 ${{\rm{g}}_{{\rm{Au}}}^{ - 1} }$  h-1) at 350 °C, which is 3.32, 2.94 and 15.0 times higher than Au1/CeO2, Au1/TiO2, and Au1/Al2O3, respectively. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, we demonstrate the structural sensitivity of these complex sites by assessing their selectivity and activity in ethanol dehydrogenation. Our study sheds new light on the design and development of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for ethanol dehydrogenation. Fundamentally, atomic-level catalyst design by colocalizing catalytically active metal atoms forming a structure-sensitive "complex site", is a crucial way to advance from heterogeneous catalysis to molecular catalysis. Our study advanced the understanding of the structure sensitivity of the active site in atomically dispersed catalysts.

Selective Photocatalytic Activation of Ethanol C-H and O-H Bonds over Multi-Au@SiO2/TiO2: Role of Catalyst Surface Structure and Reaction Kinetics

The chemical bond diversity and flexible reactivity of biomass-derived ethanol make it a vital feedstock for the production of value-added chemicals but result in low conversion selectivity. Herein, composite catalysts comprising SiO₂-coated single- or multiparticle Au cores hybridized with TiO₂ nanoparticles (mono- or multi-Au@SiO₂/TiO₂, respectively) were fabricated via electrostatic self-assembly. The C-H and O-H bonds of ethanol were selectively activated (by SiO₂ and TiO₂, respectively) under irradiation to form CH₃CH^•(OH) or CH₃CH₂O^• radicals, respectively. The formation and depletion kinetics of these radicals was analyzed by electron spin resonance to reveal marked differences between mono- and multi-Au@SiO₂/TiO₂. Consequently, the selectivity of these catalysts for 1,1-diethoxyethane after 6 h irradiation was determined as 81 and 99%, respectively, which was attributed to the more pronounced effect of localized surface plasmon resonance for multi-Au@SiO₂/TiO₂. Notably, only acetaldehyde was formed on a Au/TiO₂ catalyst without a SiO₂ shell. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that the C-H adsorption of ethanol was enhanced in the case of multi-Au@SiO₂/TiO₂, while NH₃ temperature-programmed desorption and pyridine adsorption FTIR spectroscopy revealed that multi-Au@SiO₂/TiO₂ exhibited enhanced surface acidity. Collectively, the results of experimental and theoretical analyses indicated that the adsorption of acetaldehyde on multi-Au@SiO₂/TiO₂ was stronger than that on Au/TiO₂, which resulted in the oxidative coupling of ethanol to afford 1,1-diethoxyethane on the former and the dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde on the latter.

Atomic and Electronic Structure of Pt/TiO2 Catalysts and Their Relationship to Catalytic Activity

Understanding the nature of the interaction between a metal and support, which is known as the metal-support interaction, in supported metal catalysts is crucial to design catalysts with desired properties. Here, we have developed model Pt/TiO₂ catalysts based on the deposition of colloidal Pt nanoparticles and studied their atomic and electronic structures before and after a postdeposition treatment that induces catalytic activity using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. Direct contact between Pt nanoparticles and TiO₂ is realized after the postdeposition treatment, which is accompanied by the formation of a Ti³⁺ state on the TiO₂ surface close to the Pt nanoparticles and a Pt^δ+ state on the Pt nanoparticles. The origin of these two states and their effect on the catalytic properties are discussed. These findings pave the way for a comprehensive understanding of metal-support interactions in supported metal catalysts.

The catalytic dehydrogenation of ethanol by heterogeneous catalysts

In this review, recent advances in the catalytic dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehytde with the release of hydrogen catalyzed by a heterogeneous catalyst aresummerized and discussed.

Tailorable Electrocatalytic 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation and H2 Production: Architecture-Performance Relationship in Bifunctional Multilayer Electrodes

Water electrocatalytic splitting is considered as an ideal process for generating H₂ without byproducts. However, in the water-splitting reaction, a high overpotential is needed to overcome the high-energy barrier due to the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we selected the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation reaction, which is thermodynamically favored, to replace the OER in the water-splitting process. We fabricated three-dimensional hybrid electrocatalytic electrodes via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly for simultaneous HMF conversion and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to investigate the effect of the nanoarchitecture of the electrode on the electrocatalytic activity. Nanosized graphene oxide was used as a negatively charged building block for LbL assembly to immobilize the two electroactive components: positively charged Au and Pd nanoparticles (NPs). The internal architecture of the LbL-assembled multilayer electrodes could be precisely controlled and their electrocatalytic performance could be modified by changing the nanoarchitecture of the electrode, including the thickness and position of the metal NPs. Even with a composition of the identical constituent NPs, the electrodes exhibited highly tunable electrocatalytic performance depending on the reaction kinetics as well as a diffusion-controlled process due to the sequential HMF oxidation and the HER. Furthermore, a bifunctional two-electrode electrolyzer for both the anodic HMF oxidation and the cathodic HER, which had an optimized LbL-assembled electrode for each reaction, exhibited the best full-cell electrocatalytic activity.
