Abstract
2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is an important organic platform compound that has been widely used in the fields of medicine, pesticides, dyes, plastics and resins due to its unique structure and properties. In recent years, with the emphasis on sustainable development and green chemistry, the synthesis of FDCA from biomass has attracted extensive attention. The catalytic conversion of furfural (FF) to FDCA has the advantages of easy availability of the raw material, environmental friendliness, economic feasibility and so on, which is an important direction for FDCA synthesis in the future. This paper mainly reviews the prepare pathways of furoic acid (FA) and FDCA using FF as a starting material, including the selective conversion of FF and FA to target products under different types of catalysts. First, the research progress in the synthesis of FA from FF was summarized, and then the advances in the catalytic conversion of FA to FDCA was reviewed. In addition, the development of efficient and green catalysts and the optimization of existing synthesis protocols are emphasized as key factors to improve the yield and purity of FDCA while reducing production costs. Finally, the opportunities and challenges were discussed.

Abstract
Bifuran motifs can be accessed with nickel-bipyridine electrocatalyzed homocouplings of bromine-substituted methyl furancarboxylates, which, in turn, can be prepared from hemicellulose-derived furfural. The described protocol uses sustainable carbon-based graphite electrodes in the simplest setup - an undivided cell with constant current electrolysis. The reported method avoids using a sacrificial anode by employing triethanolamine as an electron donor.

Abstract
The one-pot synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid from 2-furoic acid with a yield of 57 % was achieved for the first time using a Pd-catalyzed bromination-hydroxycarbonylation tandem reaction in HOAc-NaOAc buffer. This synthetic protocol shows major improvements compared to previously reported methods, such as using biomass-based 2-furoic acid as low-cost raw material, one-pot synthesis without isolation of intermediate products, and no need for an acidification procedure. Experiments indicate that the involved Xantphos-modified Pd-catalyst and the buffer solution play significant promoting roles for each individual reaction whereas Br2 (as the brominating reagent) had a negative effect on the second hydroxycarbonylation step, while CO was deleterious for the first bromination step. Hence, in this practical one-pot synthesis, Br2 should be consumed in the first bromination step as fully as possible, and CO is introduced after the first bromination step has been completed.

Abstract
2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) is a biomass derivate of high importance that is used as a building block in the synthesis of green polymers such as poly(ethylene furandicarboxylate) (PEF). PEF is presumed to be an ideal substitute for the predominant polymer in industry, the poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Current routes for 2,5-FDCA synthesis require 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) as a reactant, which generates undesirable co-products due to the complicated oxidation step. Therefore, direct CO2 carboxylation of furoic acid salts (FA, produced from furfural, derivate of inedible lignocellulosic biomass) to 2,5-FDCA is potentially a good alternative. Herein, we present the primary results obtained on the carboxylation reaction of potassium 2-furoate (K2F) to synthesize 2,5-FDCA, using heterogeneous catalysts. An experimental setup was firstly validated, and then several operation conditions were optimized, using heterogeneous catalysts instead of the semi-heterogeneous counterparts (molten salts). Ag/SiO2 catalyst showed interesting results regarding the K2F conversion and space–time yield of 2,5-FDCA.

Abstract
In this work, an effective hybrid strategy was developed for tandem conversion of biomass to furfurylamine with tin-based solid acid Sn-Maifanitum stone and recombinant Escherichia coli whole cells harboring ω-transaminase. 90.3 mM furfural was obtained from corncob (75 g/L) at 170 °C for 0.5 h over Sn-Maifanitum stone catalyst (3.5 wt%) in the aqueous media (pH 1.0), which could be further bioconverted into furfurylamine at 74.0% yield (based on biomass-derived furfural) within 20.5 h. Finally, an efficient recycling and reuse of Sn-Maifanitum stone catalyst and immobilized Escherichia coli AT2018 whole-cell biocatalyst was developed for the synthesis of furfurylamine from biomass in the one-pot reaction system.
