Alkyl Levulinates and 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran: Possible Biomass-Based Solvents in Palladium-Catalyzed Aminocarbonylation

In this research, ethyl levulinate, methyl levulinate, and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran as bio-derived hemicellulose-based solvents were applied as green alternatives in palladium-catalyzed aminocarbonylation reactions. Iodobenzene and morpholine were used in optimization reactions under different conditions, such as temperatures, pressures, and ligands. It was shown that the XantPhos ligand had a great influence on conversion (98%) and chemoselectivity (100% carboxamide), compared with the monodentate PPh₃. Following this study, the optimized conditions were used to extend the scope of substrates with nineteen candidates (various para-, ortho-, and meta-substituted iodobenzene derivatives and iodo-heteroarenes), as well as eight different amine nucleophiles.

Recent Progress of Metal Nanoparticle Catalysts for C–C Bond Forming Reactions

Over the past few decades, the use of transition metal nanoparticles (NPs) in catalysis has attracted much attention and their use in C–C bond forming reactions constitutes one of their most important applications. A huge variety of metal NPs, which have showed high catalytic activity for C–C bond forming reactions, have been developed up to now. Many kinds of stabilizers, such as inorganic materials, magnetically recoverable materials, porous materials, organic–inorganic composites, carbon materials, polymers, and surfactants have been utilized to develop metal NPs catalysts. This review classified and outlined the categories of metal NPs by the type of support.

Effect of solvent in the hydrogenation of acetophenone catalyzed by Pd/S-DVB

A solvent effect was found in the hydrogenation of acetophenone catalyzed by a new Pd/S-DVB catalyst, immobilized on a styrene (S)/divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer containing phosphinic groups.

Highly selective hydrogenation of aromatic ketones to alcohols in water: effect of PdO and ZrO2

Pd/ZrO2 and PdO/ZrO2 composites, containing Pd or PdO nanoparticles, were prepared using an original one-step methodology. These nanocomposites catalyze the hydrogenation of acetophenone (AP) at 1 bar and 10 bar of H2 in an aqueous solution. Compared to unsupported Pd or PdO nanoparticles, a remarkable increase in their activity was achieved as a result of interaction with zirconia. An unsupported PdO hydrogenated AP mainly to ethylbenzene (EB), while excellent regioselectivity towards 1-phenylethanol (PE) was obtained with PdO/ZrO2 and it was preserved during recycling. Similarly, regioselectivity to PE was higher with Pd/ZrO2 compared to unsupported Pd NPs. PdO and zirconia resulted in high selectivity to alcohols in the hydrogenation of substituted acetophenones.

Pd/DNA as Highly Active and Recyclable Catalyst of Suzuki–Miyaura Coupling

Pd/DNA catalysts were prepared in a mixed H2O/EtOH solvent using palladium precursors, Pd(OAc)2 and PdCl2, in different dosages and salmon fish sperm DNA. As prepared, the Pd/DNA contained Pd(II) and Pd(0) nanoparticles of various sizes and morphologies, depending on the preparation method. Pd/DNA efficiently catalyzed the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of various aryl bromides with phenylboronic acids. The catalyst was recovered by simple phase separation and then reused in seven consecutive cycles with a high activity.
