Selective two-step synthesis of 2,5-diformylfuran from monosaccharide, disaccharide, and polysaccharide using H-Beta and octahedral MnO2 molecular sieves

One-Pot Effective Approach to 2,5-Diformylfuran From Carbohydrates Using MoS2-Decorated Carbonaceous Sugarcane Bagasse

Exploring the transformation of carbohydrates into valuable chemicals offers a promising and eco-friendly method for utilizing renewable biomass resources. Developing a bi-functional, sustainable heterogeneous catalyst is of utmost importance to attain a high level of selectivity for the desired product, 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), in this direct conversion process. In this study, we developed a highly effective catalytic system to convert diverse carbohydrates into DFF. Our approach involved utilizing a MoS2 catalyst supported by amorphous carbon derived from sulfonated sugarcane biomass. The MoS2@SBG-SO3H composite was successfully synthesized using a facile and highly efficient method. The transformation of fructose into DFF achieved a significant yield of 70 % for 5 h at 160 °C using a one-step and one-pot reaction through dehydration and oxidation with oxygen. The oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into DFF using MoS2@SBG-SO3H was obtained at 94 % DFF within 5 h; the activation energy was 38.3 kJ . mol-1. The catalyst displayed convenient recovery and reusability. The direct synthesis of DFF from various carbohydrates, such as sucrose, glucose, maltose, and lactose, resulted in favorable yields. Our research provides a quick, green, and efficient process for preparing carbon-based solid acid catalysts and DFF.

Advances in Catalytic Routes for the Homogeneous Green Conversion of the Bio-Based Platform 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

5-Hydroxymethylfufural (HMF) is an intriguing platform molecule that can be obtained from biomasses and that can lead to the production of a wide range of products, intermediates, or monomers. The presence of different moieties in HMF (hydroxy, aldehyde, furan ring) allows to carry out different transformations such as selective oxidations and hydrogenations, reductive aminations, etherifications, decarbonylations, and acetalizations. This is a great chance in a biorefinery perspective but requires the development of active and highly selective catalysts. In this view, homogeneous catalysis can lead to efficient conversion of HMF at mild reaction conditions. This Review discussed the recent achievements in homogeneous catalysts development and application to HMF transformations. The effects of metal nature, ligands, solvents, and reaction conditions were reported and critically reviewed. Current issues and future chances have been presented to drive future studies toward more efficient and scalable processes.

Modulation of Ru and Cu nanoparticle contents over CuAlPO-5 for synergistic enhancement in the selective reduction and oxidation of biomass-derived furan based alcohols and carbonyls

Cu–Ru NP decorated CuAlPO-5 catalysts with low contents of Ru exhibit excellent activity and selectivity in the reduction and the oxidation of biomass-derived platform chemicals.

One-step synthesis of 2,5-diformylfuran from monosaccharides by using lanthanum(III) triflate, sulfur, and DMSO

The combination of lanthanum(iii) triflate, sulfur, and dimethyl sulfoxide prompted a facile, direct preparation of 2,5-diformylfuran from glucose and fructose. The one-step dehydration/oxidation of fructose afforded 2,5-diformylfuran in an excellent yield with high selectivity. The proposed mechanism, large-scale synthesis, and product separation were presented. This approach represents a straightforward and eco-friendly pathway, which can be applied in the large-scale production of 2,5-diformylfuran from fructose.

Selective Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Diformylfuran: from Mechanistic Investigations to Catalyst Recovery

The catalytic transformation of bio-derived compounds, specifically 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), into value-added chemicals may provide sustainable alternatives to crude oil and natural gas-based products. HMF can be obtained from fructose and successfully converted to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) by an environmentally friendly organic electrosynthesis performed in an ElectraSyn reactor, using cost-effective and sustainable graphite (anode) and stainless-steel (cathode) electrodes in an undivided cell, eliminating the need for conventional precious metal electrodes. In this work, the electrocatalysis of HMF is performed by using green solvents such as acetonitrile, γ-valerolactone, as well as PolarClean, which is used in electrocatalysis for the first time. The reaction parameters and the synergistic effects of the TEMPO catalyst and 2,6-lutidine base are explored both experimentally and through computation modeling. The molecular design and synthesis of a size-enlarged C₃ -symmetric tris-TEMPO catalyst are also performed to facilitate a sustainable reaction work-up through nanofiltration. The obtained performance is then compared with those obtained by heterogeneous TEMPO alternatives recovered by using an external magnetic field and microfiltration. Results show that this new method of electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF to DFF can be achieved with excellent selectivity, good yield, and excellent catalyst recovery.

The one-step transformation of fructose to 2,5-diformylfuran over Ru metal supported on montmorillonite

Ruthenium metal supported on a montmorillonite (2 wt% Ru-MMT) catalyst have been synthesized and characterized. Catalyst found to be effective for the one-pot transformation of fructose to DFF showing an excellent yield with good recyclability.

A Critical Review of Recent Progress and Perspective in Practical Denitration Application

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) represent one of the main sources of haze and pollution of the atmosphere as well as the causes of photochemical smog and acid rain. Furthermore, it poses a serious threat to human health. With the increasing emission of NOx, it is urgent to control NOx. According to the different mechanisms of NOx removal methods, this paper elaborated on the adsorption method represented by activated carbon adsorption, analyzed the oxidation method represented by Fenton oxidation, discussed the reduction method represented by selective catalytic reduction, and summarized the plasma method represented by plasma-modified catalyst to remove NOx. At the same time, the current research status and existing problems of different NOx removal technologies were revealed and the future development prospects were forecasted.
