Effects of Flue Gas Impurities on the Performance of Rare Earth Denitration Catalysts

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is still the most widely used process for controlling NOx gas pollution. Specifically, commercial vanadium-based catalysts have problems such as narrow operating temperature range and environmental pollution. Researchers have developed a series of cerium-based catalysts with good oxygen storage performance and excellent redox performance of CeO2. However, the anti-poisoning performance of the catalyst is the key to its application. There are many kinds of impurities in the flue gas, which has a huge impact on the catalyst. The deposition of substances, the reduction of active sites, the reduction of specific surface area, and the reduction of chemically adsorbed oxygen will affect the denitration activity of the catalyst to varying degrees, and the poisoning mechanism of different impurities on the catalyst is also different. Therefore, this review divides the impurities contained in flue gas into different types such as alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, heavy metals, and non-metals, and summarizes the effects and deactivation mechanisms of various types of impurities on the activity of rare earth catalysts. Finally, we hope that this work can provide a valuable reference for the development and application of NH3-SCR catalysts for rare earth denitration in the field of NOx control.

Assessment of Lewis-Acidic Surface Sites Using Tetrahydrofuran as a Suitable and Smart Probe Molecule

Measuring the Lewis-acidic surface sites in catalysis is problematic when the material's surface area is very low (SBET ≤1 m2  ⋅ g-1 ). For the first time, a quantitative assessment of total acidic surface sites of very small surface area catalysts (MoO3 as pure and mixed with 5-30 % CdO (wt/wt), as well as CdO for comparison) was performed using a smart new probe molecule, tetrahydrofuran (THF). The results were nearly identical compared to using another commonly used probe molecule, pyridine. This audition is based on the limited values of the surface area of these samples that likely require a relatively moderate basic molecule as THF with pKb =16.08, rather than strong basic molecules such as NH3 (pKb =4.75) or pyridine (pKb =8.77). We propose mechanisms for the interaction of vapour phase molecules of THF with the Lewis-cationic Mo and Cd atoms of these catalysts. Besides, dehydration of isopropyl alcohol was used as a probe reaction to investigate the catalytic activity of these catalysts to further support our findings in the case of THF in a temperature range of 175-300 °C. A good agreement between the obtained data of sample MoO3 -10 % CdO, which is characterised by the highest surface area value, the population of Lewis-acidic sites and % selectivity of propylene at all the applied reaction temperatures was found.

The Deactivation Mechanism of the Mo-Ce/Zr-PILC Catalyst Induced by Pb for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

As a heavy metal, Pb is one component in coal-fired flue gas and is widely considered to have a strong negative effect on catalyst activity in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR). In this paper, we investigated the deactivation mechanism of the Mo-Ce/Zr-PILC catalyst induced by Pb in detail. We found that NO conversion over the 3Mo4Ce/Zr-PILC catalyst decreased greatly after the addition of Pb. The more severe deactivation induced by Pb was attributed to low surface area, lower amounts of chemisorbed oxygen species and surface Ce3+, and lower redox ability and surface acidity (especially a low number of Brønsted acid sites). Furthermore, the addition of Pb inhibited the formation of highly active intermediate nitrate species generated on the surface of the catalyst, hence decreasing the NH3-SCR activity.

Intrinsic mechanism insight of the interaction between lead species and the Vanadium-based catalysts based on First-principles investigation

Lead (Pb) species trigger serious poisoning of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts. To improve the Pb resistance ability, revealing the impact mechanism of Pb species on the commercial SCR catalysts from a molecular level is of great significance. Herein, first-principles calculations were applied to unveil the Pb adsorption mechanism on the vanadium-based catalysts, the results were also compared with the previous experimental findings. The intrinsic interaction mechanism between Pb and catalyst components was interpreted by clarifying the change of the catalyst electronic structures (including charge transfer, bond formation situations, and active sites reactivities). It is found that the adsorption of Pb species belongs to chemisorption, evident electron transfer with the catalyst surface is inspected and intense charge transfer indicates strong adsorption. A remarkable interaction with the V = O active sites occurs and stable Pb-O bonds are formed, which significantly changes the electronic structures of the V = O sites and inhibits the NH₃ adsorption, thus suppressing the SCR activity. Finally, thermodynamic analysis was applied to elucidate the temperature influence on Pb adsorption. It is found that Pb adsorption on catalysts cannot proceed spontaneously over 500 K. At higher temperatures the adsorption is inhibited and the Pb species become less stable, which partially explains why the Pb-poisoning effect at high temperatures is relatively moderate than that at low temperatures.

Significantly enhanced Pb resistance of a Co-modified Mn–Ce–Ox/TiO2 catalyst for low-temperature NH3-SCR of NOx

Co modification can significantly improve the performance for low-temperature NH₃-SCR of NO_x and the Pb resistance of the Mn–Ce–O_x/TiO₂ catalyst.
