Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol at Ambient Conditions using Spray-Dried g-C3N4/TiO2 Granules

Accelerated sunlight photocatalysis through improved electron mobility between g-C3N4 and BiPO4 nanomaterial

Herein, we report a detailed study on creating heterojunction between graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) and bismuth phosphate (BiPO₄), enhancing the unpaired free electron mobility. This leads to an accelerated photocatalysis of 2,4-dichlorophenols (2,4-DCPs) under sunlight irradiation. The heterojunction formation was efficaciously conducted via a modest thermal deposition technique. The function of g-C₃N₄ plays a significant role in generating free electrons under sunlight irradiation. Together, the generated electrons at the g-C₃N₄ conduction band (CB) are transferred and trapped by the BiPO₄ to form active superoxide anion radicals (•O₂^-). These active radicals will be accountable for the photodegradation of 2,4-DCPs. The synthesized composite characteristics were methodically examined through several chemical and physical studies. Due to the inimitable features of both g-C₃N₄ and BiPO₄, its heterojunction formation, 2.5wt% BiPO₄/g-C₃N₄ achieved complete 2,4-DCP removal (100%) in 90 min under sunlight irradiation. This is due to the presence of g-C₃N₄ that enhanced electron mobility through the formation of heterojunctions that lengthens the electron-hole pairs' lifetime and maximizes the entire solar spectrum absorption to generate active electrons at the g-C₃N₄ conduction band. Thus, this formation significantly draws the attention for future environmental remediation, especially in enhancing the entire solar spectrum's harvesting.

Adducing Knowledge Capabilities of Instrumental Techniques Through the Exploration of Heterostructures' Modification Methods

The ongoing evolution of technology has facilitated the global research community to rapidly escalate the constant development of novel advancements in science. At the forefront of such achievements in the field of photocatalysis is the utilisation, and in oftentimes, the adaptation of modern instrumentation to understand photo-physical properties of complex heterostructures. For example, coupling in-situ X-ray Raman scattering spectroscopy for real-time degradation of catalytic materials.

Research Progress in Organic Synthesis by Means of Photoelectrocatalysis

The rapid development of radical chemistry has spurred several innovative strategies for organic synthesis. The novel approaches for organic synthesis play a critical role in promoting and regulating the single-electron redox activity. Among them, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) has attained considerable attention as the most promising strategy to convert organic compounds into fine chemicals. This review highlights the current progress in organic synthesis through PEC, including various catalytic reactions, catalyst systems and practical applications. The numerous catalytic reactions suffer the high overpotential and poor conversion efficiency, depending on the design of electrolyzers and the reaction mechanisms. We also considered the recent developments with special emphasis on scientific problems and efficient solutions, which enhance accessibility to utilize and further develop the photoelectrocatalytic technology for the specific chemical bonds formation and the fabrication of numerous catalytic systems.

Visible-Light Photocatalysts and Their Perspectives for Building Photocatalytic Membrane Reactors for Various Liquid Phase Chemical Conversions

Photocatalytic organic synthesis/conversions and water treatment under visible light are a challenging task to use renewable energy in chemical transformations. In this review a brief overview on the mainly employed visible light photocatalysts and a discussion on the problems and advantages of Vis-light versus UV-light irradiation is reported. Visible light photocatalysts in the photocatalytic conversion of CO2, conversion of acetophenone to phenylethanol, hydrogenation of nitro compounds, oxidation of cyclohexane, synthesis of vanillin and phenol, as well as hydrogen production and water treatment are discussed. Some applications of these photocatalysts in photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) for carrying out organic synthesis, conversion and/or degradation of organic pollutants are reported. The described cases show that PMRs represent a promising green technology that could shift on applications of industrial interest using visible light (from Sun) active photocatalysts.
