Metal silicotungstate salts as catalysts in furfural oxidation reactions with hydrogen peroxide

Selective Oxidation of Alcohols and Alkenes with Molecular Oxygen Catalyzed by Highly Dispersed Cobalt (II) Decorated 12-Tungstosilicic Acid-Modified Zirconia

Traditional procedures for oxidation processes suffer from a lack of selectivity, the use of organic solvents, the toxicity of the reagents, and waste production. As a cleaner alternative, highly dispersed Co over 12-tungstosilicicacid modified zirconia was synthesized and used for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and styrene with molecular oxygen to carbonyl compounds under environmentally benign solvent-free conditions. The supremacy of the present catalyst lies in achieving excellent selectivity (>90%) for products with a very high turnover number. The catalytic activity of the recycled catalysts was also explored under optimized conditions to confirm sustainability. Further, the viability of the catalyst was studied via oxidation of various alcohols and alkenes under optimized conditions as well as superiority by comparison with the reported catalysts.

Metal-exchanged phosphotungstate nanoparticles with improved acidity as the catalyst for esterification of glycerol with acetic acid

A series of metal-exchanged phosphotungstate salts, Fe-TPA, Cr-TPA, Cu-TPA, and Ni-TPA were synthesized by sonication and tested for glycerol esterification with acetic acid to obtain biofuel additives. A systematic, chemical, structural, and morphological characterization and determination of acidity were used by various analytical techniques. XRD and FT-IR studies confirmed the Keggin structure of all metal exchanged phosphotungstate salts with no impurities coming from metal nitrate salts. The incorporation of metal cations in phosphotungstic acid leads to decreased crystallite size as seen from XRD diffractograms. N2 adsorption-desorption analysis showed that the Type II isotherms were obtained for all metal exchanged phophostungstate salts, characteristic of non-porous or macroporous materials. SEM images of metal exchanged phosphotungstate salts displayed well-shaped crystalline particles. SEM-EDX analysis showed that the calculated tungsten metal ratios are in good agreement with the theoretical ratios of those for all the metal exchanged salts, verified by XRF results. The exchange of protons by the metal cations improved the thermal stability observed in the TGA analysis. The acidity strengths, from NH3-TPD analysis, were found in the following order; TPA > Fe-TPA > Cr-TPA > Cu-TPA. Additionally, pyridine-FTIR gives that the exchanging of transition metal into the phosphotungstic acid decreased the Brønsted acidity while increasing the Lewis acidity and this mostly affects the efficiency of the esterification reaction. The activity of metal exchanged salts was in the given order; Fe-TPA > Cr-TPA > Cu-TPA > Ni-TPA. Among these Fe-TPA salt, having a good ratio of Brønsted and Lewis acidity, have the selectivity for di- and triacetin (68 and 10%), with the highest conversion (96%). The iron phosphotungstate salts are a promising catalyst with sustainable Bronsted acidity during the reaction, high desired product selectivity at low temperature, easy synthesizability, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly.

Na4PMo11VO40-catalyzed one-pot oxidative esterification of benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide

The activity of the sodium salts of vanadium-doped phosphomolybdic acid was assessed in the oxidative esterification reaction of benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide in alkyl alcohol solutions. The effect of main reaction parameters, such as temperature, catalyst load, vanadium doping level, and reactant stoichiometry, on the conversion and reaction selectivity was investigated. Among the tested heteropoly salts, Na₄PMo₁₁VO₄₀ was the most active and selective catalyst, achieving almost complete conversion of benzaldehyde and high ester selectivity regardless of the alcohol investigated. The efficiency of the catalyst was correlated with its vanadium content. The size of the carbon chain of alcohol and the steric hindrance on the hydroxyl group played a key role in the reaction selectivity. While methyl and ethyl alcohols selectively provided the ester as the main product (ca. 90–95%) and benzoic acid as a subproduct, the other alcohols also afforded acetal, a condensation product, and benzaldehyde peroxide, an oxidation reaction intermediate, as secondary products. The use of an inexpensive, environmentally benign, and atom-efficient oxidant, mild conditions, and short reaction times were the positive aspects of this one-pot process.

The ferric nitrate was the most active and selective metal nitrate catalyst in the one-pot synthesis of alkyl esters from benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide at room temperature.
