Hydrotalcite-derived aluminum-doped cobalt oxides for catalytic benzene combustion: Effect of calcination atmosphere

Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles over CoAl Mixed Oxide for Ethanol Oxidation Reaction

Catalytic total oxidation is an effective technique for the treatment of industrial VOCs principally resulting from industrial processes using solvents and usually containing mono-aromatics (BTEX) and oxygenated compounds (acetone, ethanol, butanone). The aim of this work is to deposit gold nanoparticles on CoAl mixed oxide issued from layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor by using the deposition precipitation (DP) method, which is applied with two modifications, labeled method (A) and method (B), in order to enhance the interaction of the HAuCl4 precursor with the support. Method (A) involves the hydrolysis of the HAuCl4 precursor after addition of the support, while in method (B), the gold precursor is hydrolyzed before adding the support. The two methods were applied using as support the CoAl mixed oxide and the LDH precursor. Samples were characterized by several physical chemical techniques and evaluated for ethanol total oxidation. Method (B) allowed the ethanol oxidation activity to be enhanced for the resulting Au/CoAlOx catalysts thanks to the high surface concentration of Co2+ and improved reducibility at low temperature. The presence of gold permits to minimize the formation of by-products, notably, methanol, allowed for a total oxidation of ethanol at lower temperature than the corresponding support.

Calcination-controlled performance optimization of iron-vanadium bimetallic oxide nanoparticles for synergistic tumor therapy

Calcination has been widely demonstrated as a favorable protocol for producing various inorganic nanomaterials for tumor therapy. However, little attention has been paid to its effect on the biotherapeutic efficacy of inorganic nanomaterials. Herein, we compare the effects of different calcination atmospheres on the therapeutic efficacy of Fe-V-O (FVO) nanomaterials. We find that compared with FVO nanomaterials synthesized by calcination in air, those prepared by argon calcination have a lower metallic valence state and a higher near-infrared light absorption capacity, hence resulting in significantly better biosafety and higher chemodynamic therapy (CDT)/photothermal therapy (PTT) efficacy. This study demonstrates that the therapeutic efficacy of inorganic nanomaterials can be optimized by employing different thermal treatment atmospheres, which provides new insights into the development of efficient anti-tumor agents.

High-Efficiency Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia on a Co3O4 Nanoarray Catalyst with Cobalt Vacancies

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO₃RR) affords a bifunctional character in the carbon-free ammonia synthesis and remission of nitrate pollution in water. Here, we fabricated the Co₃O₄ nanosheet array with cobalt vacancies on carbon cloth (v_Co-Co₃O₄/CC) by in situ etching aluminum-doped Co₃O₄/CC, which exhibits an excellent Faradaic efficiency of 97.2% and a large NH₃ yield as high as 517.5 μmol h^-1 cm^-2, better than the pristine Co₃O₄/CC. Theoretical calculative results imply that the cobalt vacancies can tune the local electronic environment around Co sites of Co₃O₄, increasing the charge and reducing the electron cloud density of Co sites, which is thus conducive to adsorption of NO₃^- on Co sites for greatly enhanced nitrate reduction. Furthermore, the v_Co-Co₃O₄ (311) facet presents excellent NO₃RR activity with a low energy barrier of about 0.63 eV on a potential-determining step, which is much smaller than pristine Co₃O₄ (1.3 eV).
