In vivo detection of cryosurgery using multiphoton and harmonic generation microscopy

Recurrent bleeding due to mild trauma, tongue biting, poor oral hygiene, and expansion of the lesions causing difficulty in chewing, swallowing, or speaking is common sequelae of vascular lesions of the tongue. Cryosurgery is a technique for destroying lesions by the rapid freezing method. The necrotic tissue that results is allowed to slough naturally after the lesion is frozen. Cryosurgery has been utilized in the medical and dentistry field to treat many lesions as it is successful and easy to perform. It has a number of advantages, including ease of use, minimal infection rate, and no bleeding intraoperatively. This report presents a case of a 15-year-old female patient with a hemangiomatous lesion on the tongue that was successfully treated by cryosurgery using a liquid nitrogen spray. The patient demonstrated complete resolution of the lesion with good wound healing during the one-year follow-up period.

Carbon Dioxide Cryotherapy for Treatment of Nasal and Perinasal Congenital Melanocytic Nevi

Congenital melanocytic nevi, reported in 1% to 6% of newborns. There are many complications the most dangerous is the malignant transformation, but the most depressive is the cosmetic one specially for facial lesions. There is a wide range of treatment modalities none of them provide an acceptable solution for facial lesions. In this study we provide a simple, cheap and effective treatment modality for nasal and perinasal congenital melanocytic nevi. In our study, significant improvement was observed with no repigmentation throughout the follow-up period. We conclude that carbon dioxide cryotherapy is an effective treatment modality for nasal and perinasal congenital melanocytic nevi that should be used by others to stand on its long-term persistence and possible complications.

Cryosurgery as an Option for the Treatment of Vascular Lesions of the Oral Cavity

Cryosurgery is a treatment modality consisting in the destruction of tissue by the application of extremely low temperatures. This causes irreversible damage to cellular metabolism, leading to tissue destruction within minutes, a mechanism that may be beneficial when used in diseased tissues. Because cryosurgery is effective, simple, and easy to perform, it has been used in the treatment of lesions in both medical and dental fields. This technique provides many advantages, such as easy operation, absence of intraoperative bleeding, and low infection rate. We report the case of a patient with a hemangiomatous lesion of the oral cavity who was treated with liquid nitrogen spray cryosurgery, with successful results at 18-month follow-up.

In vitro imaging of thyroid tissues using two-photon excited fluorescence and second harmonic generation

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the feasibility of two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) and second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging to discriminate the normal, nodular goiter and papillary cancerous thyroid tissue.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In total, 45 fresh thyroid specimens (normal, 15; nodular goiter, 12; and papillary cancerous, 18) from 31 subjects were directly imaged by the TPEF and SHG combination method.

RESULTS

The microstructure of follicle and collagen structure in thyroid tissue were clearly identified, morphologic changes between normal, nodular goiter, and papillary cancerous thyroid tissue were well characterized by using two-photon excitation fluorescence. SHG imaging of the collagen matrix also revealed the differences between normal and abnormal.

CONCLUSIONS

Our preliminary study suggests that the TPEF and SHG combination method might be a useful tool in revealing pathologic changes in thyroid tissue.
