Emerging Wearable Interfaces and Algorithms for Hand Gesture Recognition: A Survey

Hands are vital in a wide range of fundamental daily activities, and neurological diseases that impede hand function can significantly affect quality of life. Wearable hand gesture interfaces hold promise to restore and assist hand function and to enhance human-human and human-computer communication. The purpose of this review is to synthesize current novel sensing interfaces and algorithms for hand gesture recognition, and the scope of applications covers rehabilitation, prosthesis control, sign language recognition, and human-computer interaction. Results showed that electrical, dynamic, acoustical/vibratory, and optical sensing were the primary input modalities in gesture recognition interfaces. Two categories of algorithms were identified: 1) classification algorithms for predefined, fixed hand poses and 2) regression algorithms for continuous finger and wrist joint angles. Conventional machine learning algorithms, including linear discriminant analysis, support vector machines, random forests, and non-negative matrix factorization, have been widely used for a variety of gesture recognition applications, and deep learning algorithms have more recently been applied to further facilitate the complex relationship between sensor signals and multi-articulated hand postures. Future research should focus on increasing recognition accuracy with larger hand gesture datasets, improving reliability and robustness for daily use outside of the laboratory, and developing softer, less obtrusive interfaces.

Which subject-related variables contribute to movement variability during a simulated repetitive and standardised occupational task? Recurrence quantification analysis of surface electromyographic signals

Movement variability is a component of human movement. This study applied recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) on electromyographic signals to determine the effects of two types of variables on movement variability during a short, simulated repetitive and standardised occupational clip-fitting task. The electrical activity of six muscles in the dominant upper limb was recorded in 21 participants. Variables related to the task performance (insertion force and movements performed when fitting clips) affected RQA measures: recurrence rate (RR), percentage of determinism (DET) and diagonal line length entropy (ENT). Variables related to participant's characteristics (sex, age, and BMI) affected only DET and ENT. A constrasting variability was observed such as a high-DET value combined with a high-ENT value and inversely. Variables affected mainly the recurrences organisation of the more distal muscles. Even if movement variability is complex, it should be considered by ergonomists and work place designers to better understanding of operators' movements. Practitioner summary: It is essential to consider the complexity of operators' movement variability to understand their activities. Based on intrinsic movement variability knowledge, ergonomists and work place designers will be able to modulate the movement variability by acting on workstation designs and occupational organisation with the aim of preserving operators' health. Mechanomyography-based muscle fatigue detection during electrically elicited cycling in patients with spinal cord injury

Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) benefit from muscle training with functional electrical stimulation (FES). For safety reasons and to optimize training outcome, the fatigue state of the target muscle must be monitored. Detection of muscle fatigue from mel frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) feature of mechanomyographic (MMG) signal using support vector machine (SVM) classifier is a promising new approach. Five individuals with SCI performed FES cycling exercises for 30 min. MMG signals were recorded on the quadriceps muscle group (rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM)) and categorized into non-fatigued and fatigued muscle contractions for the first and last 10 min of the cycling session. For each subject, a total of 1800 contraction-related MMG signals were used to train the SVM classifier and another 300 signals were used for testing. The average classification accuracy (4-fold) of non-fatigued and fatigued state was 90.7% using MFCC feature, 74.5% using root mean square (RMS), and 88.8% with combined MFCC and RMS features. Inter-subject prediction accuracy suggested training and testing data to be based on a particular subject or large collection of subjects to improve fatigue prediction capacity. Eccentric exercise induces spatial changes in the mechanomyographic activity of the upper trapezius muscle

In this study, we hypothesized that the recordings of multichannel mechanomyography (MMG) of the upper trapezius muscle would reveal spatially dependent manifestations in the presence of delayed onset muscle soreness occurring 24 hours after eccentric exercise (ECC). Sixteen participants performed high-intensity eccentric exercises (5 sets of 10 eccentric contractions at 100% of max elevation force) targeting the upper trapezius on their dominant side. Twelve accelerometers were attached to record MMG activity during submaximal exercise consisting of static and dynamic arm flexion and abduction. Measurements were taken before and 24 hours after ECC. Average rectified value (ARV), percentage of determinism (% DET), and recurrence (% REC) of the MMG signals were computed to estimate the level of muscular activity and the magnitude of regularity of the MMG. The ARV, % REC, and % DET maps revealed heterogeneous MMG activity of the upper trapezius 24 hours after ECC when compared with before. Increased ARV, % REC, and % DET were found 24 hours after ECC when compared with before. The study provides new key information on how a single muscle responds to ECC. Our findings suggest that multichannel MMG and nonlinear analyses may detect muscular and musculo-tendinous alterations due to ECC.
