3D reconstruction from endoscopy images: A survey

Three-dimensional reconstruction of images acquired through endoscopes is playing a vital role in an increasing number of medical applications. Endoscopes used in the clinic are commonly classified as monocular endoscopes and binocular endoscopes. We have reviewed the classification of methods for depth estimation according to the type of endoscope. Basically, depth estimation relies on feature matching of images and multi-view geometry theory. However, these traditional techniques have many problems in the endoscopic environment. With the increasing development of deep learning techniques, there is a growing number of works based on learning methods to address challenges such as inconsistent illumination and texture sparsity. We have reviewed over 170 papers published in the 10 years from 2013 to 2023. The commonly used public datasets and performance metrics are summarized. We also give a taxonomy of methods and analyze the advantages and drawbacks of algorithms. Summary tables and result atlas are listed to facilitate the comparison of qualitative and quantitative performance of different methods in each category. In addition, we summarize commonly used scene representation methods in endoscopy and speculate on the prospects of deep estimation research in medical applications. We also compare the robustness performance, processing time, and scene representation of the methods to facilitate doctors and researchers in selecting appropriate methods based on surgical applications.

Decision fusion in healthcare and medicine: a narrative review

OBJECTIVE

To provide an overview of the decision fusion (DF) technique and describe the applications of the technique in healthcare and medicine at prevention, diagnosis, treatment and administrative levels.

BACKGROUND

The rapid development of technology over the past 20 years has led to an explosion in data growth in various industries, like healthcare. Big data analysis within the healthcare systems is essential for arriving to a value-based decision over a period of time. Diversity and uncertainty in big data analytics have made it impossible to analyze data by using conventional data mining techniques and thus alternative solutions are required. DF is a form of data fusion techniques that could increase the accuracy of diagnosis and facilitate interpretation, summarization and sharing of information.

METHODS

We conducted a review of articles published between January 1980 and December 2020 from various databases such as Google Scholar, IEEE, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and web of science using the keywords decision fusion (DF), information fusion, healthcare, medicine and big data. A total of 141 articles were included in this narrative review.

CONCLUSIONS

Given the importance of big data analysis in reducing costs and improving the quality of healthcare; along with the potential role of DF in big data analysis, it is recommended to know the full potential of this technique including the advantages, challenges and applications of the technique before its use. Future studies should focus on describing the methodology and types of data used for its applications within the healthcare sector.

Toward Bridging the Simulated-to-Real Gap: Benchmarking Super-Resolution on Real Data

Capturing ground truth data to benchmark super-resolution (SR) is challenging. Therefore, current quantitative studies are mainly evaluated on simulated data artificially sampled from ground truth images. We argue that such evaluations overestimate the actual performance of SR methods compared to their behavior on real images. Toward bridging this simulated-to-real gap, we introduce the Super-Resolution Erlangen (SupER) database, the first comprehensive laboratory SR database of all-real acquisitions with pixel-wise ground truth. It consists of more than 80k images of 14 scenes combining different facets: CMOS sensor noise, real sampling at four resolution levels, nine scene motion types, two photometric conditions, and lossy video coding at five levels. As such, the database exceeds existing benchmarks by an order of magnitude in quality and quantity. This paper also benchmarks 19 popular single-image and multi-frame algorithms on our data. The benchmark comprises a quantitative study by exploiting ground truth data and qualitative evaluations in a large-scale observer study. We also rigorously investigate agreements between both evaluations from a statistical perspective. One interesting result is that top-performing methods on simulated data may be surpassed by others on real data. Our insights can spur further algorithm development, and the publicy available dataset can foster future evaluations.
