Assessment Practices in Continuing Professional Development Activities in Health Professions: A Scoping Review

INTRODUCTION

In continuing professional development (CPD), educators face the need to develop and implement innovative assessment strategies to adhere to accreditation standards and support lifelong learning. However, little is known about the development and validation of these assessment practices. We aimed to document the breadth and depth of what is known about the development and implementation of assessment practices within CPD activities.

METHODS

We conducted a scoping review using the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) and updated in 2020. We examined five databases and identified 1733 abstracts. Two team members screened titles and abstracts for inclusion/exclusion. After data extraction, we conducted a descriptive analysis of quantitative data and a thematic analysis of qualitative data.

RESULTS

A total of 130 studies were retained for the full review. Most reported assessments are written assessments (n = 100), such as multiple-choice items (n = 79). In 99 studies, authors developed an assessment for research purpose rather than for the CPD activity itself. The assessment validation process was detailed in 105 articles. In most cases, the authors examined the content with experts (n = 57) or pilot-tested the assessment (n = 50). We identified three themes: 1-satisfaction with assessment choices; 2-difficulties experienced during the administration of the assessment; and 3-complexity of the validation process.

DISCUSSION

Building on the adage "assessment drives learning," it is imperative that the CPD practices contribute to the intended learning and limit the unintended negative consequences of assessment. Our results suggest that validation processes must be considered and adapted within CPD contexts.

The Use of Augmented Reality Technology in Medical Specimen Museum Tours

Human anatomical specimen museums are commonly used by medical, nursing, and paramedical students. Through dissection and prosection, the specimens housed in these museums allow students to appreciate the complex relationships of organs and structures in more detail than textbooks could provide. However, it may be difficult for students, particularly novices, to identify the various parts of these anatomical structures without additional explanations from a docent or supplemental illustrations. Recently, augmented reality (AR) has been used in many museum exhibits to display virtual objects in videos captured from the real world. This technology can significantly enhance the learning experience. In this study, three AR-based support systems for tours in medical specimen museums were developed, and their usability and effectiveness for learning were examined. The first system was constructed using an AR marker. This system could display virtual label information for specimens by capturing AR markers using a tablet camera. Individual AR markers were required for all specimens, but their presence in and on the prosected specimens could also be obtrusive. The second system was developed to set the specimen image itself as an image marker, as most specimens were displayed in cross section. Visitors could then obtain the label information presented by AR without any markers intruding on the display or anatomical specimens. The third system was comprised of a head-mounted display combined with a natural click interface. The system could provide visitors with an environment for the natural manipulation of virtual objects with future scalability.

Internet or dvd for distance learning to isolated rural health professionals, what is the best approach?

BACKGROUND

Distance Learning (DL) is a means to overcome the barriers that prevent health workers access to medical education and training sessions to update their knowledge. The main objective of this study is to compare the knowledge acquisition among practitioners Heads of Health Based Center (HBC) for the management of hypertension in two training modalities, one interactive, via internet (by Visio conferencing and video Conferencing), and other non-interactive, via DVD in the three regions (Miarinarivo, Moramanga and Manjakandriana) of Madagascar.

METHODS

This is a quasi-experimental study comparing two distance learning methodologies, one via internet (VS or VD) and the other via DVD before and after training. Ninety-two (92) Heads of HBC participated in the training, including 56 via the Internet (24 doctors and 32 paramedics) and 36 via DVD (24 doctors and 12 paramedics).

RESULTS

According to the training mode: the mean score of knowledge of the participants was 7 (+ -2) for two terms before training. It is 14 (+ -2.5) in the internet group (VS or VD) and 15 (+ -2.7) in the DVD group after training. The difference between the two groups was not significant p = 0.076. For doctors, the score was 7 (+ -3.1) via internet and 8 (+ -2.3) via DVD in pre test and 14 (+ - 2.4) via internet and 16 (+ -. 2.7) via DVD in post test, the difference between the two training methods was significant (p = 0.008). Among the paramedics, the results are the same for both conditions, 7 (+ - 2.4 to + -3.2) in pre test and 14 (+ - 2.2 to + -2.7) in post test.

CONCLUSION

Both training methods have improved participants' knowledge and the DVD mode is the first choice for Heads HBC of Madagascar with the majority located in remote areas.
