Condition-dependent sex: who does it, when and why?

We review the phenomenon of condition-dependent sex-where individuals' condition affects the likelihood that they will reproduce sexually rather than asexually. In recent years, condition-dependent sex has been studied both theoretically and empirically. Empirical results in microbes, fungi and plants support the theoretical prediction that negative condition-dependent sex, in which individuals in poor condition are more likely to reproduce sexually, can be evolutionarily advantageous under a wide range of settings. Here, we review the evidence for condition-dependent sex and its potential implications for the long-term survival and adaptability of populations. We conclude by asking why condition-dependent sex is not more commonly observed, and by considering generalizations of condition-dependent sex that might apply even for obligate sexuals.This article is part of the themed issue 'Weird sex: the underappreciated diversity of sexual reproduction'.

Detection of HIV-1 dual infections in highly exposed treated patients

Background

Genetic characterization of HIV-1 in Argentina has shown that BF recombinants predominate among heterosexuals and injecting drug users, while in men who have sex with men the most prevalent form is subtype B.

Objectives

The aim of this work was to investigate the presence of HIV dual infections in HIV-infected individuals with high probability of reinfection

Study design

Blood samples were collected from 23 HIV positive patients with the risk of reinfection from Buenos Aires. A fragment of the HIV gene pol was amplified and phylogenetic analyses were performed. Antiretroviral drug resistance patterns of all the sequences were analyzed.

Results

Five dual infections were detected with four patients coinfected with subtype B and BF recombinants and one patient was coinfected with two BF recombinants presenting different recombination patterns. Prolonged infection with a stable clinical condition was observed in the five individuals. Resistance mutation patterns were different between the predominant and the minority strains.

Conclusions

Our results show that HIV dual infection can occur with closely related subtypes, and even with different variants of the same recombinant form in certain populations. Clinical observations showed neither aggressive disease progression nor impact on the resistance patterns in the dually-infected patients.

Modeling the dynamics of viral evolution considering competition within individual hosts and at population level: the effects of treatment

We consider two viral strains competing against each other within individual hosts (at cellular level) and at population level (for infecting hosts) by studying two cases. In the first case, the strains do not mutate into each other. In this case, we found that each individual in the population can be infected by only one strain and that co-existence in the population is possible only when the strain that has the greater basic intracellular reproduction number, R (0c ), has the smaller population number R (0p ). Treatment against the one strain shifts the population equilibrium toward the other strain in a complicated way (see Appendix B). In the second case, we assume that the strain that has the greater intracellular number R (0c ) can mutate into the other strain. In this case, individual hosts can be simultaneously infected by both strains (co-existence within the host). Treatment shifts the prevalence of the two strains within the hosts, depending on the mortality induced by the treatment, which is, in turn, dependent upon the doses given to each individual. The relative proportions of the strains at the population level, under treatment, depend both on the relative proportions within the hosts (which is determined by the dosage of treatment) and on the number of individuals treated per unit time, that is, the rate of treatment. Implications for cases of real diseases are briefly discussed.

Condition-dependent sex and the rate of adaptation

Recent modeling has shown that condition-dependent sex can evolve much more readily than sex that occurs at a uniform rate, even in the face of substantial costs of sex. Specifically, evolution favors genes that cause organisms to allocate more resources to sexual reproduction when they are in poor condition and to asexual reproduction--including increased life span--when they are in good condition. This form of fitness-associated sex (FAS) evolves because modifier genes that promote their own escape from low-fitness genetic backgrounds and that remain longer in high-fitness genetic backgrounds rise in frequency alongside the spread of high-fitness genotypes due to selection. Importantly, FAS does not evolve because it is good for the individual or good for the species but because it is in the selfish interest of modifier genes that promote FAS to move from low- to high-fitness genetic backgrounds. Even though FAS does not evolve for the good of its descendants, we show here that FAS often hastens the rate of adaptation. Ironically, the rate of adaptation is most likely to be accelerated by FAS when sex is costly, because FAS makes it more likely that individuals in poor condition will suffer the costs of sex, improving the efficiency with which less fit alleles are eliminated.

Modeling HIV infection dynamics: the role of recombination in the development of drug resistance

The benefit of recombination to HIV remains unclear because just as recombination can induce the association of favorable mutations and accelerate the development of multidrug resistance, it can also dissociate favorable combinations of mutations. The confounding influences of mutation, random genetic drift, selection and epistatic interactions between multiple resistance loci render the role of recombination difficult to unravel experimentally. Mathematical models provide valuable insights into the influence of recombination on the genomic diversification of HIV and the development of drug resistance in patients undergoing therapy, capture several recent experimental observations of HIV recombination quantitatively, and set the stage for the establishment of a robust framework for the identification of improved treatment protocols and guidelines for drug development.
