Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies on alterations in the regional neural activity in the brain of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) have provided conflicting results because of different medications used and study designs. A low bone mineral density (BMD) is also observed in patients with BD. This study aimed to further explore regional neural activities in unmedicated patients with BD and their association with BMD. METHODS In this study, 40 patients with BD and 42 healthy controls were scanned through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Imaging data were analyzed with regional homogeneity (ReHo) and pattern classification. Pearson's correlation analyses were performed to explore the correlations between abnormal ReHo and BMD. RESULTS A significant increase in ReHo values in the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG)/temporal pole, left cerebellum vermis I/vermis II/parahippocampal gyrus/brainstem, and right superior temporal gyrus (STG) and a decrease in ReHo in the occipital gyrus (OG; left middle OG/superior OG/bilateral cuneus) were found in the patients with BD (p < 0.05) compared with those in the healthy controls. No significant correlation was observed between the abnormal ReHo values in any of the brain regions of the patients with BMD.Support vector machine (SVM) analyses revealed that the ReHo values in the right STG for distinguishing patients from healthy controls showed an accuracy of 91.89%, a sensitivity of 75.68%, and a specificity of 83.78%. The ReHo values in the left cerebellum vermis I/vermis II/parahippocampal gyrus/brainstem indicated an accuracy of 78.38%, a sensitivity of 75.68%, and a specificity of 81.08%. CONCLUSION This study further confirms the abnormal brain activities in extensive regions, and these brain regions are primarily located in the fronto-temporal-occipital circuit and the cerebellum vermis of patients with BD. The regional neural activity in the right STG and the left cerebellum vermis I/vermis II/parahippocampal gyrus/brainstem may serve as potential imaging markers to distinguish patients with BD from healthy controls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar depression (BD) is easily misdiagnosed as unipolar depression (UD) or major depressive disorder (MDD) because the depressive symptoms can overlap. Regional homogeneity (ReHo), a measure commonly used for analyzing resting-state fMRI data, has been applied to the study of various neuropsychiatric disorders. However, to date, studies directly comparing BD and UD using ReHo have been relatively scarce. Further investigation is needed to study the latent pathophysiological mechanisms of BD and UD. METHODS Fifty-five patients with BD and 76 patients with UD, as well as 113 healthy controls (HC), underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We compared the voxel-wise ReHo across the whole brain for subjects in each of the three groups. RESULTS Significant differences were found in the left frontal cluster (LFC) across the three groups. There were differences between BD and UD in the LFC and left temporal cluster (LTC). In addition, differences between UD and HC existed in the LFC and the occipital cluster (OC). When comparing BD subjects with HC subjects, significant differences were found in all three clusters. No correlations were observed between the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17) scores or sub-scores and the ReHo values of BD or UD patients. CONCLUSION ReHo values in the LFC differed significantly among BD, UD, and HC subjects. ReHo in the LTC showed significant differences between BD and UD that might serve as neuroimaging markers of BD. Further, BD and UD shared ReHo changes in the cuneus, suggesting that the cuneus might provide a depressive state neuroimaging marker of BD and UD patients.

Abstract
While abundant publications attempt to analyze and understand what makes humans creative, much less attention is being paid to institutional conditions which may enhance or impede creative work. On the basis of evidence from Cambridge and AT&T's Bell Laboratories, and as a condensation of the Janelia Experiment, an institutional focus on "small groups" and "open doors" may foster individual and group creativity. The evidence suggests that small organizational units of up to seven scientists and open door concepts could nurture interactions within and between groups and enhance the critical mass for individual and group creativity.

Abstract
Background The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the myelination and the psychological trait of openness to experience in young cognitively normal volunteers using regional T1-weighted (T1w)/T2w ratios on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It was hypothesized that axonal myelination would be related to openness, thus linking trait creativity and mental illness. Methods We recruited 37 healthy subjects and administered the NEO Five-Factor Inventory to assess personality factors. Regional T1w/T2w MRI values were computed as surrogate indicators of myelination status and correlations between T1w/T2w values and various personality factors (e.g., trait of openness) were calculated with a voxel-based analysis using statistical parametric mapping. Results Significant negative correlations were identified between the trait of openness and T1w/T2w values in the medial frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and posterior insula/adjacent putamen. These relationships remained significant even after adjusting for age, sex, and education as covariates. There were no significant correlations between other personality factors and regional volumes. Conclusions Individual differences in openness may be associated with variations in intra-cortical myelination, specifically in the imaginative network of the brain including the midline core ‘hubs’ of the default mode network (anterior cingulate/medial frontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex) and regions related to motivational state (posterior insula and adjacent putamen). Signal interference related to decreased myelination may facilitate flexible imagination and the trait of openness. Our findings assist in understanding the relationship between myelination and openness, as a link between creativity and mental illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by a dysregulation of affect and impaired integration of emotion with cognition. These traits are also expressed in probands at high genetic risk of BD. The inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) is a key cortical hub in the circuits of emotion and cognitive control, and it has been frequently associated with BD. Here, we studied resting-state functional connectivity of the left IFG in participants with BD and in those at increased genetic risk. METHODS Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging we compared 49 young BD participants, 71 individuals with at least one first-degree relative with BD (at-risk), and 80 control subjects. We performed between-group analyses of the functional connectivity of the left IFG and used graph theory to study its local functional network topology. We also used machine learning to study classification based solely on the functional connectivity of the IFG. RESULTS In BD, the left IFG was functionally dysconnected from a network of regions, including bilateral insulae, ventrolateral prefrontal gyri, superior temporal gyri, and the putamen (p < .001). A small network incorporating neighboring insular regions and the anterior cingulate cortex showed weaker functional connectivity in at-risk than control participants (p < .006). These constellations of regions overlapped with frontolimbic regions that a machine learning classifier selected as predicting group membership with an accuracy significantly greater than chance. CONCLUSIONS Functional dysconnectivity of the IFG from regions involved in emotional regulation may represent a trait abnormality for BD and could potentially aid clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
Recent studies based on biography analysis provide support for the notion that the prevalence of mental illness in the creative geniuses of art, literature and science is higher than it is in more ordinary folk. However, this relationship between madness and genius, which was also addressed by the classical philosophers, has been generalized to all branches of professional endeavour. Whilst it may hold true for illustrious personalities of the fine arts, we found that the relationship proves inappropriate to the biographies of ten individuals renowned in history for their innovative contributions to medical science. Furthermore, examination of these ten biographies invites the hypothesis that certain personality traits - especially, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to new experience - can act to enhance creativity and protect against mental illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a well-known association between artistic creativity and cyclothymic temperament but the neural correlates of cyclothymic temperament have not yet been fully identified. Recently, we showed that the left lingual gyrus and bilateral cuneus may be associated with esthetic judgment of representational paintings, we therefore sought to investigate brain activity during esthetic judgment of paintings in relation to measures of cyclothymic temperament. METHODS Regions of interest (ROI) were set at the left lingual gyrus and bilateral cuneus using automated anatomical labeling, and percent signal changes of the ROIs were measured by marsbar toolbox. The associations between percent signal changes of the ROIs during esthetic judgments of paintings and cyclothymic temperament scores were investigated by Pearson׳s coefficient. Moreover, the associations were further analyzed using multiple regression analysis whereby cyclothymic temperament scores were a dependent factor and percent signal changes of the 3 ROIs and the other 4 temperament scores were independent factors. RESULTS There was a significantly negative association of cyclothymic temperament scores with the percent signal changes of the left lingual gyrus during esthetic judgments of paintings, but not with those of bilateral cuneus. Even after adjustment using multiple regression analysis, this finding remained unchanged. LIMITATIONS The number of subjects was relatively small and the task was limited to appreciation of paintings. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that cyclothymic temperament may be associated with the left lingual gyrus.
