Abstract
Sample partitioning is a crucial step towards digitization of biological assays on polymer microfluidic platforms. However, effective liquid filling into microwells and long-term hydrophilicity remain a challenge in polymeric microfluidic devices, impeding the applicability in diagnostic and cell culture studies. To overcome this, a method to produce permanent superhydrophilic 3-dimensional microwells using cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) microfluidic chips is presented. The COC substrate is oxidized using UV treatment followed by ultrasonic spray coating of polyvinyl alcohol solution, offering uniform and long-term coating of high-aspect ratio microfeatures. The coated COC surfaces are UV-cured before bonding with a hydrophobic pressure-sensitive adhesive to drive selective filling into the wells. The surface hydrophilicity achieved using this method remains unchanged (water contact angle of 9°) for up to 6 months and the modified surface is characterized for physical (contact angle & surface energy, morphology, integrity of microfeatures and roughness), chemical composition (FTIR, Raman spectroscopy) and coating stability (pH, temperature, time). To establish the feasibility of the modified surface in biological applications, PVA-coated COC microfluidic chips are tested for DNA sensing (digital LAMP detection of CMV), and biocompatibility through protein adsorption and cell culture studies (cell adhesion, viability, and metabolic activity). Kidney and breast cells remained viable for the duration of testing (7 days) on this modified surface, and the coating did not affect the protein content, morphology or quality of the cultured cells. The ultrasonic spray coated system, coating with 0.25 % PVA for 15 cycles with 0.12 A current after UV oxidation, increased the surface energy of the COC (naturally hydrophobic) from 22.04 to 112.89 mJ/m2 and improved the filling efficiency from 40 % (native untreated COC) to 94 % in the microwells without interfering with the biocompatibility of the surface, proving to be an efficient, high-throughput and scalable method of microfluidic surface treatment for diagnostic and cell growth applications.

Abstract
The surfaces of indwelling catheters offer sites for the adherence of bacteria to form biofilms, leading to various infections. Therefore, the development of antibacterial materials for catheters is imperative. In this study, combining the strong antibacterial effect of a quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) and the high biocompatibility of tannic acid (TA), we prepared a quaternary tannic acid (QTA) by grafting a synthesized quaternary ammonium salt, dimethyl dodecyl 6-bromohexyl ammonium bromide, onto TA. To prepare antibacterial catheters, QTA was blended with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) via melt extrusion, which is a convenient and easy-to-control process. Characterization of the TPU blends showed that compared with those of the QAS, dissolution rate and biocompatibility of QTA were significantly improved. On the premise that the introduction of QTA had only a slight effect on the original mechanical properties of pristine TPU, the prepared TPU/QTA maintained satisfactory antibacterial activities in vitro, under a flow state, as well as in vivo. The results verified that the TPU/QTA blend with a QTA content of 4% is effective, durable, stable, and non-toxic, and exhibits significant potential as a raw material for catheters.

Starch-Capped Silver Nanoparticles Impregnated into Propylamine-Substituted PVA Films with Improved Antibacterial and Mechanical Properties for Wound-Bandage Applications. Polymers (Basel) 2020; 12:polym12092112. Abstract
This research endeavor aims to develop polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based films capable of blends with silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) for improved antibacterial properties and good mechanical strength to widen its scope in the field of wound dressing and bandages. This study reports synthesis of propylamine-substituted PVA (PA-PVA), Ag-NPs via chemical and green methods (starch capping) and their blended films in various proportions. Employment of starch-capped Ag-NPs as nanofillers into PVA films has substantially improved the above-mentioned properties in the ensuing nanocomposites. Synthesis of PA-PVA, starch-capped Ag-NPs and blended films were well corroborated with UV/Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, NMR, XRD and SEM analysis. Synthesized Ag-NPs were of particle shape and have an average size 20 nm and 40 nm via green and chemical synthesis, respectively. The successful blending of Ag-NPs was yielded up to five weight per weight into PA-PVA film as beyond this self-agglomeration of Ag-NPs was observed. Antibacterial assay has shown good antimicrobial activities by five weight per weight Ag-NPs(G)-encapsulated into PA-PVA blended film, i.e., 13 mm zone inhibition against Escherichia coli and 11 mm zone inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus. Physical strength was measured in the terms of young's modulus via tensile stress-strain curves of blended films. The five weight per weight Ag-NPs(G)/PA-PVA blend film showed maximum tensile strength 168.2 MPa while three weight per weight Ag-NPs(G)/PVA blend film showed highest values for ultimate strain 297.0%. Ag-NPs embedment into PA-PVA was resulted in strong and ductile film blend than pristine PA-PVA film due to an increase in hydrogen bonding. These good results of five weight per weight Ag-NPs(G)/PA-PVA product make it a potent candidate for wound dressing application in physically active body areas.

Abstract
Clinically, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) biofilm infection inevitably induces the failure of bone implants. Herein, a hydrophilic and viscous hydrogel of poly(vinyl alcohol) modified with chitosan, polydopamine, and NO release donor was formed on a red phosphorus nanofilm deposited on a titanium implant (Ti-RP/PCP/RSNO). Under the irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR), peroxynitrite (•ONOO-) was formed by the reaction between the released NO and superoxide (•O2-) produced by the RP nanofilm. Specifically, we revealed the antibacterial mechanism of the ONOO- against the MRSA biofilm. In addition, osteogenic differentiation was promoted and inflammatory polarization was regulated by the released NO without NIR irradiation through upregulating the expression of Opn and Ocn genes and TNF-α. The MRSA biofilm was synergistically eradicated by •ONOO-, hyperthermia, and •O2- under NIR irradiation as well as the immunoreaction of the M1 polarization. The in vivo results also confirmed the excellent osteogenesis and biofilm eradication by released NO from the RP/PCP/RSNO system under NIR irradiation, indicating the noninvasive tissue reconstruction of MRSA-infected tissues through phototherapy and immunotherapy.

Abstract
The development of efficient synthetic strategies for incorporating antibacterial coatings into textiles for pharma and medical applications is of great interest. This paper describes the preparation of functional nonwoven fabrics coated with polyaniline (PANI) via in situ polymerization of aniline in aqueous solution. The effect of three different monomer concentrations on the level of polyaniline coating on the fibers comprising the fabrics, and its electrical resistivities and antibacterial attributes, were studied. Experimental results indicated that weight gains of 0.7 and 3.0 mg/cm2 of PANI were achieved. These levels of coatings led to the reduction of both volume and surface resistivities by several orders of magnitude for PANI-coated polyester-viscose fabrics, i.e., from 108 to 105 (Ω/cm) and from 109 to 105 Ω/square, respectively. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed the incorporation of PANI coating with an average thickness of 0.4–1.5 µm, while Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) demonstrated the preservation of the thermal stability of the pristine fabrics. The unique molecular structure of PANI, consisting of quaternary ammonium ions under acidic conditions, yielded an antibacterial effect in the modified fabrics. The results revealed that all types of PANI-coated fabrics totally killed S. aureus bacteria, while PANI-coated viscose fabrics also demonstrated 100% elimination of S. epidermidis bacteria. In addition, PANI-coated, PET-viscose and PET fabrics showed 2.5 log and 5.5 log reductions against S. epidermidis, respectively.

Abstract
Background/aims The critical part of a bio-artificial liver device is establishment of a bioreactor filled with liver cells. However, it is still unclear how to maintain benign cell function while achieving the sufficient cell quantity. In the current study, we aim to establish a novel carrier for the culture of HepG2 cells, a liver cell line, by modifying polypropylene nonwoven fabrics with native type I collagen. Methods “Piranha” solution, KH-550 and glutaraldehyde subsequently were used to bridge native type I collagen and polypropylene nonwoven fabrics. The type I collagen-coupled polypropylene nonwoven fabric was characterized by XPS, SEM, ATR-FTIR and water contact angle measurement. Furthermore, the biocompatibility between HepG2 cells and fiber film is evaluated by the ability of cell proliferation, albumin secretion, as well as urea synthesis. Results The coating of collagen onto polypropylene fabrics was more efficient using the chemical covalent binding method than direct immersion, which was validated by the presence of collagen-related elements and chemical bond. The adding of collagen in polypropylene fabrics promoted hydrophilicity and HepG2 cell adherence. Additionally, enhanced cell proliferation, increased albumin secretion and urea synthesis were observed in HepG2 cells growing on collagen-coated polypropylene fabrics. Conclusions The collagen coated polypropylene nonwoven fabrics, acting as a feasible substrate for HepG2 cell culture, may be used as a promising liver cell carrier for artificial liver reactor.

Abstract
Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most used polymers for microporous membrane fabrication due to its good thermal stability, chemical resistance, mechanical strength, and low cost. There have been numerous studies reporting the developments and applications of PP membranes. However, PP membrane with high performance is still a challenge. Thus, this article presents a comprehensive overview of the advances in the preparation, modification and application of PP membrane. The preparation methods of PP membrane are firstly reviewed, followed by the modification approaches of PP membrane. The modifications includes hydrophilic and superhydrophobic modification so that the PP membranes become more suitable to be applied either in aqueous applications or in non-aqueous ones. The fouling resistant of hydrophilized PP membrane and the wetting resistant of superhydrophobized PP membrane are then reviewed. Finally, special attention is given to the various potential applications and industrial outlook of the PP membranes.

Abstract
Postfunctionalizable hyperbranched polyurea coatings were prepared by the bulk polycondensation of AB2 monomers on preactivated silicon substrates. As previously shown, AB2 monomers were prepared, comprising a secondary amino group (A) and two blocked isocyanates (B) connected by hexyl spacers, in a single step and in quantitative yields. Covalent anchoring of the coatings on substrates was accomplished by reacting the secondary amino group in the focal point of the polymers with the blocked isocyanates (BIs) of the covalently attached coupling agent. The BIs in the top layer of the coatings were storage-stable under ambient conditions but well-modifiable with amino- or hydroxyl-functional compounds on heating. Attachment of polyethylene glycol or perfluoro-1-decanol afforded hydrophilic or hydrophobic surfaces. Immobilization and quaternization of polyethylenimines yielded highly charged surfaces. The coatings were extensively characterized by a number of techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and contact -angle measurements.

Abstract
Prepared by coating TiO(2)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on a low cost polyester filter cloth (22 μm), a composite membrane (10 μm pore size) was successfully used in an anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactor (A/O-MBR) for treating a simulate wastewater in removing nitrate/ammonium for water reuse in a polyester fiber production plant. Its permeate flux and the anti-fouling properties against extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were studied. Comparing with a commercial (0.1 μm) PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane, similar effluent qualities were achieved, meeting the basic COD requirements for reuse. Anti-EPS accumulation, the TiO(2)/PVA Polyester composite membrane had higher sustained permeability and required less frequent cleaning. Its filtration time was 4 times longer when operated at a higher flux than the PVDF membrane. The nano-TiO(2) enhances the interaction between PVA and polyester, forms a more hydrophilic surface, drastically reduces the contact angle with water and reduces EPS fouling. The slow (trans-membrane pressure) TMP rise, loose cake layer, the low filtration resistances, and the EPS, SEM analysis confirmed the advantage of the composite membrane. Potential in lowering the membrane cost, the operation and maintenance cost, and in enhancing MBR waste water treatment efficiency is expected by the use of this new composite membrane.

Abstract
The surface compatibility and antibacterial properties of biomaterials are crucial to tissue engineering and other medical applications, and plasma-assisted technologies have been employed to enhance these characteristics with good success. Herein, we describe and review the recent developments made by our interdisciplinary team on self-antimicrobial biomaterials with emphasis on plasma-based surface modification. Our results indicate that a self-antibacterial surface can be produced on various types of materials including polymers, metals, and ceramics by plasma treatment. Surface characteristics such as roughness, microstructure, chemistry, electronegativity, free energy, hydrophilicity, and interfacial physiochemistry are important factors and can be tailored by using the appropriate plasma-assisted processing parameters. In particular, mechanistic studies reveal that the interfacial physiochemical processes, biocidal agents, and surface free energy are predominantly responsible for the antibacterial effects of plasma-modified biomaterials.

Abstract
Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) brushes were grafted onto microporous polysulfone (PSF) membranes via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and then immobilized copper (II) ions on the modified membrane. Copper-loaded membranes exhibited excellent antibacterial properties with the added advantage of repeated use. The chemical composition and surface morphology of the functionalized membrane was characterized by ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM, and AFM. The results showed that P4VP brushes clustered to rod-shaped covering and the sub-layer of membrane maintained sponge-like structures at the same time. Additionally, the kinetic study of SI-ATRP reaction revealed that the chain length of P4VP brushes increased linearly as the polymerization time increased. The antibacterial effects of copper-loaded CMPSF-g-P4VP membrane against Escherichiacoli were examined and the antibacterial efficiency reached 100% when 2.49wt.% of copper (II) ions was immobilized on membrane. The presented results could serve as a good starting point for the fabrication of antibacterial CMPSF membranes for waste-water treatment applications.
