Abstract
Polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) are far investigated for their ability to extract heavy metals and small organic compounds from aqueous media. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most widely used base polymers for the PIM elaboration. However, its use requires the incorporation of a relatively expensive liquid plasticizer. In the present work, poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) serves as a polymer plasticizer for the elaboration of PIMs based on PVC as a base polymer and Aliquat 336 as a carrier. The composition of PIMs was optimized in terms of the PVC/EVA ratio and the vinyl acetate (VA) groups content (x) of EVA (i.e. EVAx). Physical-chemical properties of the resulting membranes are analyzed and correlated with their structure. The results of SEM analysis revealed miscible PVC/EVA70 blends (i.e. with 70 wt% of VA groups) and partially miscible PVC/EVA40 blends. The plasticizing effect of the EVA copolymer was confirmed by the tensile test results. The results of transport measurements showed that PIMs containing EVA40 and PVC are more efficient for the Cr(VI) extraction than those with only PVC. Thus, EVA40 can effectively replace the conventional liquid plasticizers while improving the Cr(VI) permeability. Besides, it is stated that EVA40-based PIMs are more stable as compared with conventional PIMs due to the water plasticizing effect. After the membrane optimization, the highest Cr(VI) transport flux (54.7 µmol·m-2·s-1) was measured. Moreover, the addition of 10 wt% of tetradecanol causes the increase of the water plasticizing effect and allows obtaining a PIM with high stability (up to 24 cycles) required for the membrane long-term operation.

Abstract
Polymeric ion selective electrodes are highly sensitive to changes in zero current ion flow and this offers a route to signal amplification in label-free potentiometric immunosensors. In this work, a label-free potentiometric immunosensor toward Salmonella typhimurium (ST) assembled in a home-made pipette-tip electrode is described. The signal-output amplification was implemented on a gold nanoparticle polymer inclusion membrane (AuNPs-PIM) which was used as sensing platform and for antibody immobilization. Additionally, a marker ion was used to detect the antibody-antigen binding event at the electrode surface. The immunosensor construction was performed in several steps: i) gold salt ions extraction in PVC membrane; ii) AuNPs formation using Na2EDTA as reduction agent; iii) antibody anti-Salmonella conjugation on AuNPs-PIM in pipette-tip electrodes. The potential shift observed in potentiometric measurements was derived simply from the blocking effect in the ionic flux caused by antigen-antibody conjugation, without no extra steps, mimetizing the ion-channel sensors. A detection limit of 6 cells mL-1 was attained. As proof-of-concept, recovery studies were performed in spiked commercial apple juice samples with success. Due to the simplicity of use, the appealing cost of equipment and sensor production and being able to provide a quick analytical response (less than 1 h for a complete assay, including sample preparation for analysis), this scheme represents a good prototype device for the detection of foodborne pathogens like ST or other immune-responsive bacteria.

Abstract
Tuning the optical properties of Au nanostructures is of paramount importance for scientific interest and has a wide variety of applications. Since the surface plasmon resonance properties of Au nanostructures can be readily adjusted by changing their shape, many approaches for preparing Au nanostructures with various shapes have been reported to date. However, complicated steps or the addition of several reagents would be required to achieve shape control of Au nanostructures. The present work describes a facile and effective shape-controlled synthesis of Au nanostructures and their photothermal therapy applications. The preparation procedure involved the reaction of HAuCl4 and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tetrasodium salt, which acted as a reducing agent and ligand, at room temperature without the need for any toxic reagent or additives. The morphology control from spheres to branched forms and nanowire networks was easily achieved by varying the EDTA concentration. Detailed investigations revealed that the four carboxylic groups of the EDTA tetrasodium salt are essential for effective growth and stabilization. The produced Au nanowire networks exhibited a broad absorption band in the near-infrared (NIR) region, thereby showing efficient cancer therapeutic performance by inducing the selective photothermal destruction of cancerous glioblastoma cells (U87MG) under NIR irradiation.

Abstract
Clusters of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) formed on the surface of PVC-based polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) with a liquid phase containing Aliquat 336 as the carrier and in some cases 1-dodecanol or 2-nitrophenol octyl ether as plasticizers were found to inhibit the extraction of nitrate by the PIMs. This observation was based on gradually increasing the mass of AuNPs on the membrane surface and testing the ability of the membrane to extract nitrate after each increase. In this way, it was possible to determine the so-called “critical AuNP masses” at which the studied membranes ceased to extract nitrate. On the basis of these results, it can be hypothesized that the surfaces of these PIMs are not homogeneous with respect to the distribution of their membrane liquid phases, which are present only at certain sites. Extraction takes place only at these sites, and at the “critical AuNP mass” of a PIM, all these extraction sites are blocked and the membrane loses its ability to extract.

Abstract
A polymeric membrane-supported catalyst with immobilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared through the extraction and in situ reduction of AuIII salts in a one-step strategy. Polymeric inclusion membranes (PIMs) and polymeric nanoporous membranes (PNMs) were tested as different membrane-support systems. Transport experiments indicated that PIMs composed of cellulose triacetate, 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether, and an aliphatic tertiary amine (Adogen 364 or Alamine 336) were the most efficient supports for AuIII extraction. The simultaneous extraction and reduction processes were proven to be the result of a synergic phenomenon in which all the membrane components were involved. Scanning electron microscopy characterization of cross-sectional samples suggested a distribution of AuNPs throughout the membrane. Transmission electron microscopy characterization of the AuNPs indicated average particle sizes of 36.7 and 2.9 nm for the PIMs and PNMs, respectively. AuNPs supported on PIMs allowed for >95.4 % reduction of a 0.05 mmol L-1 4-nitrophenol aqueous solution with 10 mmol L-1 NaBH4 solution within 25 min.
