A Critical Review of Electrolytes for Advanced Low- and High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

In the 21st century, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) represent a promising source of power generation due to their high efficiency compared with coal combustion engines and eco-friendly design. Proton exchange membranes (PEMs), being the critical component of PEMFCs, determine their overall performance. Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) based Nafion and nonfluorinated-based polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes are commonly used for low- and high-temperature PEMFCs, respectively. However, these membranes have some drawbacks such as high cost, fuel crossover, and reduction in proton conductivity at high temperatures for commercialization. Here, we report the requirements of functional properties of PEMs for PEMFCs, the proton conduction mechanism, and the challenges which hinder their commercial adaptation. Recent research efforts have been focused on the modifications of PEMs by composite materials to overcome their drawbacks such as stability and proton conductivity. We discuss some current developments in membranes for PEMFCs with special emphasis on hybrid membranes based on Nafion, PBI, and other nonfluorinated proton conducting membranes prepared through the incorporation of different inorganic, organic, and hybrid fillers.

Mixed-Matrix Membrane Fabrication for Water Treatment

In recent years, technology for the fabrication of mixed-matrix membranes has received significant research interest due to the widespread use of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) for various separation processes, as well as biomedical applications. MMMs possess a wide range of properties, including selectivity, good permeability of desired liquid or gas, antifouling behavior, and desired mechanical strength, which makes them preferable for research nowadays. However, these properties of MMMs are due to their tailored and designed structure, which is possible due to a fabrication process with controlled fabrication parameters and a choice of appropriate materials, such as a polymer matrix with dispersed nanoparticulates based on a typical application. Therefore, several conventional fabrication methods such as a phase-inversion process, interfacial polymerization, co-casting, coating, electrospinning, etc., have been implemented for MMM preparation, and there is a drive for continuous modification of advanced, easy, and economic MMM fabrication technology for industrial-, small-, and bulk-scale production. This review focuses on different MMM fabrication processes and the importance of various parameter controls and membrane efficiency, as well as tackling membrane fouling with the use of nanomaterials in MMMs. Finally, future challenges and outlooks are highlighted.

Spectroscopic Study of Reinforced Cross-Linked Polymeric Membranes for Fuel Cell Application

Acid-doped reinforced polymer electrolyte membranes for high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell applications (HT PEMFCs) are presented and spectroscopically studied. Fully aromatic polyethers are employed bearing main chain pyridine units as the proton accepting sites, which have two different substitution patterns of the pyridine units, namely, 2,5- or 2,6-pyridine. This fact enables control of the solubility and of the acid doping ability of the polymeric membranes. Reinforcement is accomplished via incorporation of a PTFE woven fabric during the casting procedure for fabrication of the membranes. High acid uptake of the reinforced membranes was maintained for the 2,6-pyridine-based copolymers with high pyridine unit content. Studies of the swelling behavior of these reinforced membranes revealed that they expand mainly along the z-axis, which helps to avoid extensive damage in case of humidity or temperature changes during the fuel cell operation. Additionally, spectroscopic techniques are employed, namely, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with depth profile, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, and reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy, for the in-depth study of the two copolymer membranes doped with phosphoric acid. Through these spectroscopic evaluations, modifications in the membranes' chemical structure, orientation, composition, and electronic structure after the reinforcement and doping processes were elaborated and unveiled.

Construction of High-Performance, High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membranes through Incorporating SiO2 Nanoparticles into Novel Cross-linked Polybenzimidazole Networks

The practical applications of phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole (PA-PBI) as high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) are mainly limited by their poor dimensional-mechanical stability at high acid doping levels (ADLs) and the leaching of PA from membranes during fuel cell operation. In this work, to overcome these issues, we fabricated novel cross-linked PBI networks with additional imidazole groups by employing a newly synthesized bibenzimidazole-containing dichloro compound as cross-linker and an arylether-type Ph-PBI as matrix. Ph-PBI featured by good solubility under high molecular weight offers satisfactory film-forming ability and mechanical strength using for the matrix. Importantly, the additional imidazole moieties in BIM-2Cl endow the cross-linked PBI membranes improved dimensional-mechanical stability with simultaneously enhanced ADLs and proton conductivity. Furthermore, superior acid retention capability is obtained by incorporating porous polyhydroxy SiO₂ nanoparticles into these cross-linked networks. As a result, the SiO₂/cross-linked PBI composite membranes are suitable to manufacture membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), and an excellent H₂/O₂ cell performance with a peak power density of 497 mW cm^-2 at 160 °C under anhydrous conditions can be achieved.

Synthesis and characterization of novel imidazolium-functionalized polyimides for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells

PEMFCs based on novel imidazolium-functionalized polyimides (ImPI-x)s demonstrate high OCVs and high peak power density with low PA uptakes. Microphase separation of ImPI-x can also be observed by AFM.
