Abstract
Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries are considered as promising candidates for safe and green energy storage. Yet, Zn anodes still suffer from serious challenges. Herein, an effective cation-sieve of polyethersulfone-modified sulfonated polyether ether ketone is developed as protective coating layer of the Zn anodes. Cation-only transmission and dense property of the layer can protect the Zn from active water and anions, inhibiting corrosion, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and passivation. Zincophilic property of the layer can homogenize Zn2+ flow, and promote uniform plating of Zn. Therefore, protected symmetric Zn||Zn cell can maintain as long as 5600 h with a low polarization at 1.0 mA cm-2 and 0.5 mAh cm-2, and still long as 800 h at 5.0 mA cm-2 and 5.0 mAh cm-2. It is found that not only the dendrites but also the popular existed passivation product of Zn4SO4(OH)6·5H2O can be inhibited effectively. In asymmetric Zn||Ti cells, average Coulombic efficiency can reach 98.2%, suggesting corrosion and HER are restrained effectively. Matched with MnO2 cathode, full cells using coated Zn exhibit much better cycling performance than that using bare Zn. Moreover, Zn4O3(SO4)·7H2O (ZSH)-assisted reversible conversion mechanism between the ZSH and ZnxHyMnO2 is revealed through operando Raman.

Abstract
Dialysis membranes are not hemocompatible with human blood, as the patients are suffering from the blood-membrane interactions' side effects. Zwitterionic structures have shown improved hemocompatibility; however, their complicated synthesis hinders their commercialization. The goal of the study is to achieve fast functionalization for carboxybetaine and sulfobetaine zwitterionic immobilization on PES membranes while comparing the stability and the targeted hemocompatibility. The chemical modification approach is based on an aminolysis reaction. Characterization, computational simulations, and clinical analysis were conducted to study the modified membranes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) patterns showed a lower mean roughness for carboxybetaine-modified (6.3 nm) and sulfobetaine-modified (7.7 nm) membranes compared to the neat membrane (52.61 nm). The pore size of the membranes was reduced from values above 50 nm for the neat PES to values between 2 and 50 nm for zwitterionized membranes, using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. More hydrophilic surfaces led to a growth equilibrium water content (EWC) of nearly 6% for carboxybetaine and 10% for sulfobetaine-modified membranes. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were 12% and 16% stable water for carboxybetaine- and sulfobetaine-modified membranes, respectively. Sulfobetaine membranes showed better compatibility with blood with respect to C5a, IL-1a, and IL-6 biomarkers. Aminolysis-based zwitterionization was found to be suitable for the improvement of hemodialysis membranes. The approach introduced in this paper could be used to modify the current dialysis membranes with minimal change in the production facilities.

Abstract
This study reports the investigation of human serum albumin (HSA) adsorption on a poy-styrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA)-coated PVDF membrane, which is a potential smart material for biomedical applications. First, copolymer coating on the membrane surface was successfully performed, due to the hydrophobic interaction of the PS anchoring group with the PVDF membrane. This was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization of the membrane. Then, HSA adsorption onto the coated membrane was assessed and was proved to be strongly dependent on the pH of the protein solution. Indeed, both FTIR mapping and mass balance calculation using UV-visible spectroscopy displayed a greater HSA adsorption on the membrane at pH 5, even though it still took place at higher pH, but to a lower extent. Afterwards, an ionic strength influence study evinced the role of electrostatic interactions between HSA and the PAA layer on HSA adsorption. Dead-end filtration of HSA through the coated membrane confirmed the pH dependence of HSA adsorption on the coated membrane.

Abstract
The self-assembly and stimuli-responsive properties of nanogel poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) (p(NIPAm)) and zwitterion-modified nanogel poly(n-isopropylacrylamide-co-sulfobetainemethacrylate) (p(NIPAm-co-SBMA)) were explored by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. Simulation results reveal that for both types of nanogel, it is beneficial to form spherical nanogels at polymer concentrations of 5-10%. When the chain length (L) elongates from 10 to 40, the sizes of the nanogels enlarge. As for the p(NIPAm) nanogel, it shows thermoresponsiveness; when it switches to the hydrophilic state, the nanogel swells, and vice versa. The zwitterion-modified nanogel p(NIPAm-co-SBMA) possesses thermoresponsiveness and ionic strength responsiveness concurrently. At 293 K, both hydrophilic p(NIPAm) and superhydrophilic polysulfobetaine methacrylate (pSBMA) could appear on the outer surface of the nanogel; however, at 318 K, superhydrophilic pSBMA is on the outer surface to cover the hydrophobic p(NIPAm) core. As the temperature rises, the nanogel shrinks and remains antifouling all through. The salt-responsive property can be reflected by the nanogel size; the volumes of the nanogels in saline systems are larger than those in salt-free systems as the ionic condition inhibits the shrinkage of the zwitterionic pSBMA. This work exhibits the temperature-responsive and salt-responsive behavior of zwitterion-modified-pNIPAm nanogels at the molecular level and provides guidance in antifouling nanogel design.

Abstract
Hemodialysis (HD) membrane fouling with human serum proteins is a highly undesirable process that results in blood activations with further severe consequences for HD patients. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes possess a great extent of protein adsorption due to hydrophobic interaction between the membrane surface and non-polar regions of proteins. In this study, a PVDF membrane was modified with a zwitterionic (ZW) polymeric structure based on a poly (maleic anhydride-alt-1-decene), 3-(dimethylamino)-1-propylamine derivative and 1,3-propanesultone. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and zeta potential analyses were used to determine the membrane's characteristics. Membrane fouling with human serum proteins (human serum albumin (HSA), fibrinogen (FB), and transferrin (TRF)) was investigated with synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography (SR-μCT), which allowed us to trace the protein location layer by layer inside the membrane. Both membranes (PVDF and modified PVDF) were detected to possess the preferred FB adsorption due to the Vroman effect, resulting in an increase in FB content in the adsorbed protein compared to FB content in the protein mixture solution. Moreover, FB was shown to only replace HSA, and no significant role of TRF in the Vroman effect was detected; i.e., TRF content was nearly the same both in the adsorbed protein layer and in the protein mixture solution. Surface modification of the PVDF membrane resulted in increased FB adsorption from both the protein mixture and the FB single solution, which is supposed to be due to the presence of an uncompensated negative charge that is located at the COOH group in the ZW polymer.

Abstract
Inflammation and thrombosis are two major complications of blood-contacting catheters that are used as extracorporeal circuits for hemodialysis and life-support systems. In clinical applications, complications can lead to increased mortality and morbidity rates. In this work, a biomimetic erythrocyte membrane zwitterion coating based on poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine-co-dopamine methacrylate) (pMPCDA) copolymers is uniformly and robustly modified onto a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) catheter via mussel-inspired surface chemistry. The zwitterionic pMPCDA coating exhibits excellent antifouling activity and resists bacterial adhesion, fibrinogen adsorption, and platelet adhesion/activation. The material also demonstrates great hemocompatibility, cytocompatibility, and anticoagulation properties in vitro. Additionally, this biocompatible pMPCDA coating reduces in vivo foreign-body reactions by mitigating inflammatory response and collagen capsule formation, due to its outstanding ability to resist nonspecific protein adsorption. More importantly, when compared with a bare PVC catheter, the pMPCDA coating exhibits outstanding antithrombotic properties when tested in an ex vivo rabbit perfusion model. Thus, it is envisioned that this biomimetic erythrocyte membrane surface strategy will provide a promising way to mitigate inflammation and thrombosis caused by the use of blood-contacting catheters.

Abstract
Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations was adopted to investigate the modification of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by adding zwitterionic polymer brush poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate)- tetraethyl orthosilicate (PSBMA-TEOS) grafted silicon nanoparticles (SNPs) to the casting solution. The effects of polymer concentration and grafting architecture (PSBMA length and SNPs grafting ratio) on membrane morphology are discussed. When the polymer concentration reaches 40%, part of the SNPs is embedded in the membrane; the optimal polymer concentration is around 25-30%. In the SNPs system with the grafting ratio of 1, some SNPs are eluted into solution during phase separation. Compared with different grafting architectures, M8-5, M10-5 and M12-5 system (Mx-y, where x represents the length of the zwitterionic polymer brush and y represents the grafting ratio of the silica nanoparticles) exhibited stable membrane morphologies. This work can provide guidance for the design and modification of organic-inorganic composite membrane and help understand the distribution of modified materials on the membrane surface.

Abstract
The combination of nanofibre-based barriers and anti-adhesion drugs is potentially useful for adhesion prevention after ventral surgeries. However, drug molecules exposed to the surface of barriers easily result in an initial burst that is sharp, thus limiting the anti-adhesion efficiency. In this study, we developed a sandwiched electrospun scaffold loaded with ibuprofen (Sandwich) serving as a physical barrier, as well as an effectual carrier delivering it into the injured site for enhancing anti-adhesion capability. This Sandwich scaffold exhibited significantly a reduced initial burst of drug release in the first hour and a prolonged delivery for ibuprofen over 14 days, expected to provide the long-term anti-adhesion capability. In vitro study on fibroblasts showed that incorporation of ibuprofen effectively inhibited their adhesion and proliferation, and developed Sandwich maintained the least adhesion of L-929 after 5 days of culture (<20%). For RAW 264.7 macrophages, worse cell adhesion and poorer TNF-α production of Sandwich indicated its superior anti-inflammatory effect. In summary, the sandwiched ibuprofen-loaded scaffold showed promising potential for preventing adhesion formation.

Abstract
Artificial lung (AL) membranes are used for blood oxygenation for patients undergoing open-heart surgery or acute lung failures. Current AL technology employs polypropylene and polymethylpentene membranes. Although effective, these membranes suffer from low biocompatibility, leading to undesired blood coagulation and hemolysis over a long term. In this work, we propose a new generation of AL membranes based on amphiphobic fluoropolymers. We employed poly(vinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene), or PVDF-co-HFP, to fabricate macrovoid-free membranes with an optimal pore size range of 30-50 nm. The phase inversion behavior of PVDF-co-HFP was investigated in detail for structural optimization. To improve the wetting stability of the membranes, the fabricated membranes were coated using Hyflon AD60X, a type of fluoropolymer with an extremely low surface energy. Hyflon-coated materials displayed very low protein adsorption and a high contact angle for both water and blood. In the hydrophobic spectrum, the data showed an inverse relationship between the surface free energy and protein adsorption, suggesting an appropriate direction with respect to biocompatibility for AL research. The blood oxygenation performance was assessed using animal sheep blood, and the fabricated fluoropolymer membranes showed competitive performance to that of commercial polyolefin membranes without any detectable hemolysis. The data also confirmed that the bottleneck in the blood oxygenation performance was not the membrane permeance but rather the rate of mass transfer in the blood phase, highlighting the importance of efficient module design.

Zwitterionic Polymer Brush Grafted on Polyvinylidene Difluoride Membrane Promoting Enhanced Ultrafiltration Performance with Augmented Antifouling Property. Polymers (Basel) 2020; 12:polym12061303. [PMID: 32517332 PMCID: PMC7361682 DOI: 10.3390/polym12061303] [Citation(s) in RCA: 20] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/07/2020] [Revised: 06/03/2020] [Accepted: 06/04/2020] [Indexed: 11/16/2022] Open
Abstract
Superhydrophilic zwitterions on the membrane surface have been widely exploited to improve antifouling properties. However, the problematic formation of a <20 nm zwitterionic layer on the hydrophilic surface remains a challenge in wastewater treatment. In this work, we focused on the energy consumption and time control of polymerization and improved the strong hydrophilicity of the modified polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane. The sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) monomer was treated with UV-light through polymerization on the PVDF membrane at a variable time interval of 30 to 300 s to grow a poly-SBMA (PSBMA) chain and improve the membrane hydrophilicity. We examined the physiochemical properties of as-prepared PVDF and PVDF-PSBMAx using numeric analytical tools. Then, the zwitterionic polymer with controlled performance was grafted onto the SBMA through UV-light treatment to improve its antifouling properties. The PVDF-PSBMA120s modified membrane exhibited a greater flux rate and indicated bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection performance. PVDF-PSBMA120s and unmodified PVDF membranes were examined for their antifouling performance using up to three cycles dynamic test using BSA as foulant. The PVDF-modified PSBMA polymer improved the antifouling properties in this experiment. Overall, the resulting membrane demonstrated an enhancement in the hydrophilicity and permeability of the membrane and simultaneously augmented its antifouling properties.

Abstract
In recent years, zwitterionic polymers have been frequently reported to modify various surfaces to enhance hydrophilicity, antifouling and antibacterial properties, which show significant potentials particularly in biological systems. This review focuses on the fabrication, properties and various applications of zwitterionic polymer grafted surfaces. The "graft-from" and "graft-to" strategies, surface grafting copolymerization and post zwitterionization methods were adopted to graft lots type of the zwitterionic polymers on different inorganic/organic surfaces. The inherent hydrophilicity and salt affinity of the zwitterionic polymers endow the modified surfaces with antifouling, antibacterial and lubricating properties, thus the obtained zwitterionic surfaces show potential applications in biosystems. The zwitterionic polymer grafted membranes or stationary phases can effectively separate plasma, water/oil, ions, biomolecules and polar substrates. The nanomedicines with zwitterionic polymer shells have "stealth" effect in the delivery of encapsulated drugs, siRNA or therapeutic proteins. Moreover, the zwitterionic surfaces can be utilized as wound dressing, self-healing or oil extraction materials. The zwitterionic surfaces are expected as excellent support materials for biosensors, they are facing the severe challenges in the surface protection of marine facilities, and the dense ion pair layers may take unexpected role in shielding the grafted surfaces from strong electromagnetic field.

Abstract
Zwitterionic materials are the latest generation of materials for nonfouling interfaces and membranes. They outperform poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives because they form tighter bonds with water molecules and can trap more water molecules. This feature article summarizes our laboratory's fundamental developments related to the functionalization of interfaces and membranes using zwitterionic materials. Our molecular designs of zwitterionic polymers and copolymers, sulfobetaine-based, carboxybetaine-based, or phosphobetaine-based, are first reviewed. Then, the strategies used to functionalize surfaces/membranes by coating, grafting onto, grafting from, or in situ modification are examined and discussed, and the third part of this article shifts the focus to key applications of zwitterionic materials. Finally, some potential future directions for molecular designs, functionalization processes, and applications are presented.

Abstract
Poly(ethylene terephtalate) (PET)-based materials face general biofouling issues that we addressed by grafting a copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate and sulfobetaine methacrylate, poly(GMA- r-SBMA). The grafting procedure involved a dip-coating step followed by UV-exposure and led to successful grafting of the copolymer as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and zeta potential measurements. It did not modify the pore size nor the porosity of the PET membranes. In addition, their surface hydrophilicity was considerably improved, with a water contact angle falling to 30° in less than 20 s and 0° in less than 1 min. The effect of copolymer concentration in the coating bath (dip-coating procedure) and UV exposure time (UV step) were scrutinized during biofouling studies involving several bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, but also whole blood and HT1080 fibroblasts cells. The results indicate that if all conditions led to improved biofouling mitigation, due to the efficiency of the zwitterionic copolymer and grafting procedure, a higher concentration (15 mg/mL) and longer UV exposure time (at least 10 min) enhanced the grafting density which reflected on the biofouling results and permitted a better general biofouling control regardless of the nature of the biofoulant (bacteria, blood cells, fibroblasts).

Abstract
Functionalized biomaterial surface patterns capable of resisting nonspecific adsorption while retaining their bioactivity are crucial in the advancement of biomedical technologies, but currently available biomaterials intended for use in whole blood frequently suffer from nonspecific adsorption of proteins and cells, leading to a loss of activity over time. In this review, we address two concepts for the design and modification of blood compatible biomaterial surfaces, zwitterionic modification and surface functionalization with glycans – both of which are inspired by the membrane structure of mammalian cells – and discuss their potential for biomedical applications.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The present study serves three main functions. First, it presents a novel random copolymer, made of octadecyl acrylate hydrophobic blocks and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate hydrophilic groups, and it zwitterionic form. Second, random copolymer and zwitterionic random copolymer, OmDn and Z-OmDn, are used to modify polypropylene membranes by evaporation coating. Our investigations unveil that this method leads to sufficiently stable self-assembling provided a minimum number of hydrophobic repeat units of 77, which also corresponds to a hydrophobic degree of 74%. Third, antifouling and hemocompatible properties of membranes are thoroughly investigated using all types of blood cells separately, as well as challenging membranes against whole blood in static and dynamic conditions. Membranes modified with zwitterionic copolymer containing 26% of zwitterionic groups are shown to be highly antifouling and hemocompatible, for a coating density as low as 0.2mg/cm(2). Their application in a specially designed blood filtration module enabled to almost totally inhibit blood cells interactions with membrane material, as well as to importantly reduce platelet activation in the permeate (2.5-fold reduction). STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The design of new zwitterionic copolymer material is proposed and demonstrated in this study. It was showed that hydrophobicoctadecyl acrylate segments can be introduced in the zwitterioniccarboxybetaine polymer chain with a well-controlled random sequence. Stable, efficient, and effective surface zwitterionization of hydrophobic polypropylene are obtained via grafting onto approach by evaporation-induced self-assembling coating. In the perspective of potential application, hemocompatible blood filtration was demonstrated with the excellent results of non-activated platelets obtained. SUMMARY OF IMPACTS DESIGN New zwitterionicmaterial, amphiphatic carboxybetaine copolymers. DEVELOPMENT Evaporation-induced self-assembling grafting. APPLICATION Hemocompatible blood filtration.
