Abstract
Polysulfone (PSf) membranes typically have a negligible rejection of salts due to the intrinsic larger pore size and wide pore size distribution. In this work, a facile and scalable heat treatment was proposed to increase the salt rejection. The influence of heat treatment on the structure and performance of PSf membranes was systematically investigated. The average pore size decreased from 9.94 ± 5.5 nm for pristine membranes to 1.18 ± 0.19 nm with the increase in temperature to 50 °C, while the corresponding porosity decreased from 2.07% to 0.13%. Meanwhile, the thickness of the sponge structure decreased from 20.20 to 11.5 μm as the heat treatment temperature increased to 50 °C. The MWCO of PSf decreased from 290,000 Da to 120 Da, whereas the membrane pore size decreased from 5.5 to 0.19 nm. Correspondingly, the water flux decreased from 1545 to 27.24 L·m-2·h-1, while the rejection ratio increased from 3.1% to 74.0% for Na2SO4, from 1.3% to 48.2% for MgSO4, and from 0.6% to 23.8% for NaCl. Meanwhile, mechanism analysis indicated that the water evaporation in the membranes resulted in the shrinkage of the membrane pores and decrease in the average pore size, thus improving the separation performance. In addition, the desalting performance of the heat-treated membranes for real actual industrial wastewater was improved. This provides a facile and scalable route for PSf membrane applications for enhanced desalination.

Abstract
In this study, a blend membrane consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and tertiary amine containing random copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate-r-dimethylamino-2-ethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA-r-DMAEMA)) was fabricated and utilized as an adsorptive membrane for micropollutants (anionic dye and heavy metal ions) removal from aqueous solutions. Cross-linking the random copolymer by p-xylylene dichloride (XDC) produced the membrane with improved copolymer retention ratio and stability, while slightly variated physicochemical properties. Besides, the fluxes of crosslinked blend membranes dramatically increased from 0.7 ± 0.1 L/(m2h) to 118.6 ± 5.9 L/(m2h). Then the present blend membrane was carried out adsorption and filtration experiments to investigate the influence of various of operation parameters including initial solution pH value, contacting time, initial solution concentration, and recycling efficiency on micropollutants removal. The experimental results showed that the removal of the anionic dyes and heavy metal ions on this tertiary amine containing blend membrane was a pH-dependent process with the maximum adsorption capacity at the initial solution pH of 3.5 for anionic dyes and 6.0 for metal ions, respectively. The membrane showed highly efficient capture of sunset yellow (above 99%). Meanwhile, the captured sunset yellow was recovered and concentrated with a small volume of alkaline solutions at pH 10.0, which simultaneously regenerated the membrane for its reuse. In a 3-cycle capture-recovery test, the membrane demonstrated a high sunset yellow recovery ratio and a volumetric concentration ratio as high as 400%. Our study provides an alternative strategy for functionalized membrane fabrication, micropollutants removal and recovery.

Abstract
Poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(imidazoled glycidyl methacrylate-co-diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate) (PTFEMA-b-P(iGMA-co-MEO2MA)) containing an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymer chain was prepared and blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to produce a thermoresponsive membrane with smart self-cleaning performance. The successful preparation of the membrane was demonstrated by attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy characterization. The membrane shows UCST performance, and its flux changes with the filtrate temperature as the UCST polymer chain stretches out and contracts in response to various temperatures. In addition, the UCST polymer chain can disrupt the foulant and push it away from the membrane when the temperature is above the UCST and thus enables membranes to exhibit a smart self-cleaning behavior. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first report of a smart self-cleaning membrane based on the blending of a diblock copolymer containing a UCST polymer chain with PVDF.

Abstract
Over the past decades, inspired by the outstanding properties of clay minerals such as abundance, low-cost, environmental benignity, high stability, and regularly arranged silica-alumina framework, researchers put much efforts on the interface assembly and surface modification of natural minerals with bare photocatalysts, i.e. TiO2, g-C3N4, ZnO, MoS2, etc. The clay-based hybrid photocatalysts have resulted in a rich database for their tailor-designed microstructures, characterizations, and environmental-related applications. Therefore, in this study, we took a brief introduction of three representative minerals, i.e. kaolinite, montmorillonite and rectorite, and discussed their basic merits in photocatalysis applications. After that, we summarized the recent advances in construction of stable visible-light driven photocatalysts based on these minerals. The structure-activity relationships between the properties of clay types, pore structure, distribution/dispersion and light absorption, carrier separation efficiency as well as redox performance were illustrated in detail. Such representative information would provide theoretical basis and scientific support for the application of clay based photocatalysts. Finally, we pointed out the major challenges and future directions at the end of this review. Undoubtedly, control and preparation of novel photocatalysts based on clays will continue to witness many breakthroughs in the arena of solar-driven technologies.

Abstract
Biomembranes play a crucial role in a multitude of biological processes, where high selectivity and efficiency are key points in the reaction course. The outstanding performance of biological membranes is based on the coupling between the membrane and biomolecules, such as membrane proteins. Polymer-based membranes and assemblies represent a great alternative to lipid ones, as their presence not only dramatically increases the mechanical stability of such systems, but also opens the scope to a broad range of chemical functionalities, which can be fine-tuned to selectively combine with a specific biomolecule. Tethering the membranes or nanoassemblies on a solid support opens the way to a class of functional surfaces finding application as sensors, biocomputing systems, molecular recognition, and filtration membranes. Herein, the design, physical assembly, and biomolecule attachment/insertion on/within solid-supported polymeric membranes and nanoassemblies are presented in detail with relevant examples. Furthermore, the models and applications for these materials are highlighted with the recent advances in each field.
