Abstract
Membranes have been extensively studied and applied in various fields owing to their high energy efficiency and small environmental impact. Further conferring membranes with stimuli responsiveness can allow them to dynamically tune their pore structure and/or surface properties for efficient separation performance. This review summarizes and discusses important developments and achievements in stimuli-responsive membranes. The most commonly utilized stimuli, including light, pH, temperature, ions, and electric and magnetic fields, are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to stimuli-responsive control of membrane pore structure (pore size and porosity/connectivity) and surface properties (wettability, surface topology, and surface charge), from the perspective of determining the appropriate membrane properties and microstructures. This review also focuses on strategies to prepare stimuli-responsive membranes, including blending, casting, polymerization, self-assembly, and electrospinning. Smart applications for separations are also reviewed as well as a discussion of remaining challenges and future prospects in this exciting field. This review offers critical insights for the membrane and broader materials science communities regarding the on-demand and dynamic control of membrane structures and properties. We hope that this review will inspire the design of novel stimuli-responsive membranes to promote sustainable development and make progress toward commercialization.

Abstract
Attractive membranes are critical for improving efficiencies of forward osmosis (FO) desalination process. In this study, a novel FO-PES-MoS2 thin film composite (TFC) membrane was assembled using the phase transfer method through merging MoS2 nanosheets into substrate casting solution. A sequence of characterization techniques was applied to test microstructures and physicochemical properties of the membranes and modification mechanisms based on MoS2 concentrations. Desalination efficiencies of the fabricated membranes were assessed by three NaCl draw solutions. Compared to the blank membrane, the MoS2-contained membranes had a thinner active layer, more upright and open pore structure, higher porosity, and lower surface roughness. 1 wt% MoS2 content was the optimal modification condition, and water flux increased by 35.01% under this condition. Simultaneously, reverse salt flux of the FO-PES-1-MoS2 membrane declined by 29.15% under 1 M NaCl draw solution, indicating increased salt ion rejection performance of the modified membranes. Moreover, Js/Jv ratio indicated that MoS2 nanosheets helped stabilize the desalination performance of the membranes. This study demonstrated that the novel FO-PES-MoS2 TFC membranes possessed improved performances and showed promising properties for saline water desalination.

Abstract
The forward osmosis (FO) process suffers from unfavorable internal concentration polarization (ICP) of the solute within the support layer of thin-film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membranes. To lower the ICP effect, a support layer with low tortuosity, high porosity, and interconnected pores is necessary. In the present investigation, sodium bicarbonate has been presented as a simple pore-forming agent to decline the ICP within a poly(ethersulfone) substrate. In particular, the porous poly(ethersulfone) support layer was fabricated by embedding sodium bicarbonate into the casting solution to form CO2 gas bubbles in the substrate during phase inversion in an acidic nonsolvent. Experimental results revealed that the separation performance of the TFC-FO membranes significantly improved. The most water-permeable membrane was prepared in the acidic nonsolvent (TFC-SB.3) and it demonstrated a water flux of 26.6 LMH and a reverse salt flux of 3.6 gMH in the FO test. In addition, the TFC-SB.3 membrane showed an 85% increase in water permeability (2.13 LMH/bar) with negligible change in salt rejection (94.3%). Such observations were based on the increase of substrate porosity and the improved connectivity of the finger-like channels through in situ CO2 gas bubbling that alleviate the ICP phenomena. Therefore, the current study presents a simple, scalable method to design a high-performance TFC-FO membrane.

Abstract
Membrane fouling is an issue of concern due to the hydrophobic properties of polyethersulfone (PES) membrane when applied in water treatment. In this work, a facile hydrothermal method was utilized to synthesize hierarchical flower-like structured molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (HF-MoS2 NSs) that then incorporated into PES membranes as composite membranes. We characterized their permeability, the separation performance, the antifouling performance, and the antibacterial activity systematically. Results showed that composite membranes exhibited a better pure water flux (286 LMH/bar) at the HF-MoS2 NSs content of 0.4 wt%, which was 1.8 times higher than the control membrane. Also, composite PES membranes achieved 98.2% and 96.9% rejection of BSA and HA in comparison with the control PES membrane (87.3%, and 84.5%, respectively). Compare to the control PES membrane, the flux recovery ratio of the composite membrane increased from 69% to 88% for BSA fouling and increased from 84% to 93% for HA fouling. The retention rate for the organic dyes also improved slightly after HF-MoS2 NSs incorporation into the membrane. Additionally, the composite membranes exhibited a relatively high antibacterial activity against E. coli and B. subtilis with antibacterial rates of 67.8% and 82.5%, respectively. In conclusion, HF-MoS2 NSs incorporated composite membranes were shown to have outstanding filtration performance and could be a promising candidate for practical application in water filtration.
