Abstract
Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are considered to be one of the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems due to the high safety, high energy density and wide operating temperature range of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) they use. Unfortunately, the practical application of SSEs has rarely been successful, which is largely attributed to the low chemical stability and ionic conductivity, ineluctable solid-solid interface issues including limited ion transport channels, high energy barriers, and poor interface contact. A comprehensive understanding of ion transport mechanisms of various SSEs, interactions between fillers and polymer matrixes and the role of the interface in SSBs are indispensable for rational design and performance optimization of novel electrolytes. The categories, research advances and ion transport mechanism of inorganic glass/ceramic electrolytes, polymer-based electrolytes and corresponding composite electrolytes are detailly summarized and discussed. Moreover, interface contact and compatibility between electrolyte and cathode/anode are also briefly discussed. Furthermore, the electrochemical characterization methods of SSEs used in different types of SSBs are also introduced. On this basis, the principles and prospects of novel SSEs and interface design are curtly proposed according to the development requirements of SSBs. Moreover, the advanced characterizations for real-time monitoring of interface changes are also brought forward to promote the development of SSBs.

Abstract
The existing in situ preparation methods of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) often require the use of a solvent, which would lead to a complicated process and potential safety hazards. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a solvent-free in situ method to produce SPEs with good processability and excellent compatibility. Herein, a series of polyaspartate polyurea-based SPEs (PAEPU-based SPEs) with abundant (PO)x(EO)y(PO)z segments and cross-linked structures were developed by systematically regulating the molar ratios of isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and isophorone diisocyanate trimer (tri-IPDI) in the polymer backbone and LiTFSI concentrations via an in situ polymerization method, which gave rise to good interfacial compatibility. Furthermore, the in situ-prepared PAEPU-SPE@D15 based on the IPDI/tri-IPDI molar ratio of 2:1 and 15 wt % LiTFSI exhibits an improved ionic conductivity of 6.80 × 10-5 S/cm at 30 °C and could reach 10-4 orders of magnitude when the temperature was above 40 °C. The Li|LiFePO4 battery based on PAEPU-SPE@D15 had a wide electrochemical stability window of 5.18 V, demonstrating a superior interface compatibility toward LiFePO4 and the lithium metal anode, exhibited a high discharge capacity of 145.7 mAh g-1 at the 100th cycle and a capacity retention of 96.8%, and retained a coulombic efficiency of above 98.0%. These results showed that the PAEPU-SPE@D15 system displayed a stable cycle performance, excellent rate performance, and high safety compared with PEO systems, indicating that the PAEPU-based SPE system may play a crucial role in the future.

Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries using either liquid electrolytes or solid electrolytes have been extensively studied in recent years, but both of these encounter safety risks such as flammability of liquid electrolytes and uncontrolled dendrite growth. In this study, a sandwich gel polymer electrolyte (SGPE) with a thermal shutdown function was developed to resolve the safety issues. By adjustment of surface pore size of the SGPE, lithium dendrite growth is suppressed. Due to the sandwich structure design, the SGPE can effectively respond to an overheating environment, regulate lithium ion transport and inhibit the penetration of lithium dendrite, demonstrating a remarkably high safety of the batteries, especially at high temperature or under thermal runaway circumstances. In addition, the LiFePO4/SGPE/Li battery exhibits a high reversible capacity of 135 mA h g-1 at 1C and maintains high capacity retention (>95%) after 200 charge-discharge cycles. This study shows a great advantage to handle thermal abuse and a stable lithium anode, suggesting a promising approach to the high safety lithium metal batteries.

Abstract
Most of the current commercialized lithium batteries employ liquid electrolytes, despite their vulnerability to battery fire hazards, because they avoid the formation of dendrites on the anode side, which is commonly encountered in solid-state batteries. In a review two years ago, we focused on the challenges and issues facing lithium metal for solid-state rechargeable batteries, pointed to the progress made in addressing this drawback, and concluded that a situation could be envisioned where solid-state batteries would again win over liquid batteries for different applications in the near future. However, an additional drawback of solid-state batteries is the lower ionic conductivity of the electrolyte. Therefore, extensive research efforts have been invested in the last few years to overcome this problem, the reward of which has been significant progress. It is the purpose of this review to report these recent works and the state of the art on solid electrolytes. In addition to solid electrolytes stricto sensu, there are other electrolytes that are mainly solids, but with some added liquid. In some cases, the amount of liquid added is only on the microliter scale; the addition of liquid is aimed at only improving the contact between a solid-state electrolyte and an electrode, for instance. In some other cases, the amount of liquid is larger, as in the case of gel polymers. It is also an acceptable solution if the amount of liquid is small enough to maintain the safety of the cell; such cases are also considered in this review. Different chemistries are examined, including not only Li-air, Li-O2, and Li-S, but also sodium-ion batteries, which are also subject to intensive research. The challenges toward commercialization are also considered.

Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising energy storage devices for integrating renewable resources and high power applications, owing to their high energy density, light weight, high flexibility, slow self-discharge rate, high rate charging capability, and long battery life. LIBs work efficiently at ambient temperatures, however, at high-temperatures, they cause serious issues due to the thermal fluctuation inside batteries during operation. The separator is a key component of batteries and is crucial for the sustainability of LIBs at high-temperatures. The high thermal stability with minimum thermal shrinkage and robust mechanical strength are the prime requirements along with high porosity, ionic conductivity, and electrolyte uptake for highly efficient high-temperature LIBs. This Review deals with the recent studies and developments in separator technologies for high-temperature LIBs with respect to their structural layered formation. The recent progress in monolayer and multilayer separators along with the developed preparation methodologies is discussed in detail. Future challenges and directions toward the advancement in separator technology are also discussed for achieving remarkable performance of separators in a high-temperature environment.
