Modification of commercial UF membranes by electrospray deposition of polymers for tailoring physicochemical properties and enhancing filtration performances

Organic micropollutant removal and phosphate recovery by polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes: Impact of buildup interactions

Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) deposition conditions can favorably or adversely affect the membrane filtration performance of various pollutants. Although pH and ionic strength have been proven to alter the characteristics of PEM, their role in determining the buildup interactions that control filtration efficacy has not yet been conclusively proved. A PEM constructed using electrostatic or non-electrostatic interactions from controlled deposition of a weak polyelectrolyte could retain both charged and uncharged pollutants from water. The fundamental relationship between polyelectrolyte charge density, PEM buildup interaction, and filtration performance was explored using a weak-strong electrolyte pair consisting of branching poly (ethyleneimine) and poly (styrene sulfonate) (PSS) across pH ranges of 4-10 and NaCl concentrations of 0 M-0.5 M. PEI/PSS multilayers at acidic pH were dominated by electrostatic interactions, which favored the selective removal of a charged solute, phosphate over chloride, while at alkaline pH, non-electrostatic interactions dominated, which favored the removal of oxybenzone (OXY), a neutral hydrophobic solute. The key factor determining these interactions was the charge density of PEI, which is controlled by pH and ionic strength of the deposition solutions. These findings indicate that the control of buildup interactions can largely influence the physico-chemical and transport characteristics of PEM membranes.

Machine learning for layer-by-layer nanofiltration membrane performance prediction and polymer candidate exploration

In this study, machine learning-based models were established for layer-by-layer (LBL) nanofiltration (NF) membrane performance prediction and polymer candidate exploration. Four different models, i.e., linear, random forest (RF), boosted tree (BT), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), were formed, and membrane performance prediction was determined in terms of membrane permeability and selectivity. The XGBoost exhibited optimal prediction accuracy for membrane permeability (coefficient of determination (R2): 0.99) and membrane selectivity (R2: 0.80). The Shapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) method was utilized to evaluate the effects of different LBL NF membrane fabrication conditions on membrane performances. The SHAP method was also used to identify the relationships between polymer structure and membrane performance. Polymers were represented by Morgan fingerprint, which is an effective description approach for developing modeling. Based on the SHAP value results, two reference Morgan fingerprints were constructed containing atomic groups with positive contributions to membrane permeability and selectivity. According to the reference Morgan fingerprint, 204 potential polymers were explored from the largest polymer database (PoLyInfo). By calculating the similarities between each potential polymer and both reference Morgan fingerprints, 23 polymer candidates were selected and could be further used for LBL NF membrane fabrication with the potential for providing good membrane performance. Overall, this work provided new ways both for LBL NF membrane performance prediction and high-performance polymer candidate exploration. Rapid membrane surface functionalization with Ag nanoparticles via coupling electrospray and polymeric solvent bonding for enhanced antifouling and catalytic performance: Deposition and interfacial reaction mechanisms

Electrospray is an effective, fast, and potentially scalable approach for membrane surface functionalization using various engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). However, the lack of fundamental understandings of the deposition process hinders the controlled deposition, efficient utilization, and long-term stabilization of the ENMs, and thus the practical applications of the nanocomposite membranes. To bridge this critical knowledge gap, advanced online characterization techniques (laser diffraction size measurement and laser doppler velocimetry) coupled with mathematical aerosol modeling are utilized to understand the three key process parameters: droplet size, deposition velocity, and evaporation rate. After deposition, polymeric solvent bonding (i.e., interdiffusion and subsequent entanglement of polymers) was found to substantially stabilize the deposited Ag NPs. We further provide a comprehensive description of such interfacial reaction mechanisms. Our results show a consistency between theoretical predication and measurement of the droplet size or deposition velocity, whereas realistic droplet evaporation rate is lower than the theoretical value due to the addition of the polymer. Successful stabilization of Ag NPs via interfacial polymeric bonding occurs under the conditions of large material contact area, high material compatibility, proper temperature (e.g., 22 °C), and polymer-to-solvent ratio (e.g., 3-5%). Our coupled approach achieves superior Ag NP coverage with high stability within minutes. Despite some reduction in water permeance, the resultant membrane shows markedly improved catalytic and antimicrobial (antibiofouling) performance (>90% enhancement) and maintained rejection. Taken together, our findings provide fundamental insights into the coupled process of electrospray deposition and polymeric solvent bonding to enable additive manufacturing of novel nanocomposite membranes with diverse structures and multiple functions.

Fabrication and Performance of Low-Fouling UF Membranes for the Treatment of Isolated Soy Protein Solutions

Consumers are becoming more conscious about the need to include functional and nutritional foods in their diet. This has increased the demand for food extracts rich in proteins and peptides with physiological effects that are used within the food and pharmaceutical industries. Among these protein extracts, soy protein and its derivatives are highlighted. Isolated soy protein (ISP) presents a protein content of at least 90%. Wastewaters generated during the production process contain small proteins (8–50 kDa), and it would be desirable to find a recovery treatment for these compounds. Ultrafiltration membranes (UF) are used for the fractionation and concentration of protein solutions. By the appropriate selection of the membrane pore size, larger soy proteins are retained and concentrated while carbohydrates and minerals are mostly recovered in the permeate. The accumulation and concentration of macromolecules in the proximity of the membrane surface generates one of the most important limitations inherent to the membrane technologies. In this work, three UF membranes based on polyethersulfone (PES) were fabricated. In two of them, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added in their formulation to be used as a fouling prevention. The membrane fouling was evaluated by the study of flux decline models based on Hermia’s mechanisms.

Recent developments in layer-by-layer assembled systems application in water purification

Electrostatically-based layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is a versatile surface functionalization technique allowing the construction of complex three-dimensional architectures on virtually any type of material using various combinations of nano-bricks. One of the most promising applications of LbL assembled systems is in water purification. The main two strategies developed in this purpose consist in either enhancing the barrier properties of separation membranes and in the construction of core-shell organic/inorganic sorbents. In this review, the recent achievements in this topic are discussed with respect to the use of LbL-based composites in desalination and removal of heavy metal ions or organic pollutants. Finally, some works dealing with economic aspects of using LbL assemblies for water purification are presented, thus highlighting forthcoming strategies to develop economically-viable materials for such applications.

Electrospray: More than just an ionization source

Electrospraying (ES) is a potential-driven process of liquid atomization, which is employed in the field of analytical chemistry, particularly as an ionization technique for mass spectrometric analyses of biomolecules. In this review, we demonstrate the extraordinary versatility of the electrospray by overviewing the specifics and advanced applications of ES-based processing of low molecular mass compounds, biomolecules, polymers, nanoparticles, and cells. Thus, under suitable experimental conditions, ES can be used as a powerful tool for highly controlled deposition of homogeneous films or various patterns, which may sometimes even be organized into 3D structures. We also emphasize its capacity to produce composite materials including encapsulation systems and polymeric fibers. Further, we present several other, less common ES-based applications. This review provides an insight into the remarkable potential of ES, which can be very useful in the designing of innovative and unique strategies.
